We are still in season 9. I don't expect canon to start until season 10. Probably sometime in February or March.

There's no real set amount of episodes per season (though 22 is around the average), and the title for 196 is a vast depature in tone from the many filler titles we've seen thus far. So, we could be looking at a full canon episdoe as early as the end of January...though I acknowledge that I could be letting my hope cloud my judgement .

It's not the first time that a filler or canon arc starts or ends mid season. But if the whole season is going to be filler, then canon won't resume before April.

After checking out Konoha TV, I saw that 196 is still filler.

Spoiler for filler:

An advertisement mentioned that it's about Sasuke and the Forest of Death as we continue our flashback episodes. 195 is obviously a Team 10 episode. Who the hell knows what 194 will be about. Maybe Lee and Gai enter a three legged man race.

So I would bet more on April when the OP changes.

What makes this so bad is not the fact that they are fillers (hell, some of the recent fillers have been fun), but rather that there is little hope for an actual filler arc. I long for some sort of story, and all of these stand-alone episodes give me little to look forward to (in fact, I am tempted to just create one filler thread for all the episode, instead of the traditional singular thread per episode). If it’s really going to be months before a canon story will re-emerge, then I hope the anime teams can at least come up with a brief 4-6 episode arc so I'll at least have some minor story to keep track of...

more fillers, eh? for how long? i don't really watch the fillers, i feel that they're just a waste of time but that's just my opinion. i know a lot of people who appreciate the fillers and don't mind watching them. i'll just stick to the manga (for now) then.

Naruto loves fillers way too much... series aren't even that close to the manga! Manga is like whole arc ahead and even more, it is not Bleach where you can count chapters on fingers.

I don't get why so many people say that. It's like you can't see farther than your own feet. Close to the manga or not, more fillers will be needed before the end. Since the studio doesn't know when the manga will end, and how many filler episodes will be needed, they want to do them before instead of later because that's the safest thing to do. If they don't, since they can't predict the future, they may end up in the situation Bleach is in right now, with multiple filler arcs that interrupt ongoing canon arcs and are set into different timelines.
