Looked forward to this as it's one of the manga titles that I follow. Happy that the first episode was done really well, particularly the dancing animation. Was worried that they would scrimp on that. Hoping now they keep up with the dancing animation.

A very solid premiere, with some of the trademark Asakura weirdness shining through.

I'm not sure I can keep watching this with those ridiculous eyes.

Also I'm not too fond of the main character. Boys like him in anime rub me the wrong way. If I had been the teacher, I'd have thrown him out long ago.

Haven't looked carefully to see, but I wonder if any of the team on this show include people who worked on Yuri on Ice. No Yamamoto Sayo, of course.

Holy crap those eyes...

Not a huge fan of male tsunderes like Junpei but it was sort of interesting regardless. I'll probably give it a few episodes anyway.

I'll agree in not loving the eyes. Artistic style and tastes are going to vary, but it wasn't exactly a winning move for me here.

I do feel for the kid to a degree. His father looked dead inside when his son said he wanted to take up ballet. And then he was dead...in general soon after. While what the Uncle said wasn't great...I half expected him to guilt trip the kid even harder and imply that his father died from the shame of both his kids picking up ballet .

Main character is alright. Was definitely more likable as a kid, but that's fine . Will see how a few episodes play out and if I'll keep up with this one.

Having taught at the JHS level in Japan, I would say Junpei is pretty accurate to the real-life model. Of course I could see why that would make some viewers dislike him, LOL, but I didn't find anything especially obnoxious about him. If anything he seems pretty interesting and complicated as compared to how 14 year-old boys are usually portrayed in anime.

Episode 2
MAPPA continues with good dancing animation. The most notable being Junpei's dance in the street at night, and the demonstration by Luou with Miyako. The backgrounds are pretty and varied as well. Still hoping that MAPPA is able to maintain this quality of animation for the rest of the show.

The adaptation is sticking fairly close to the manga with minor cuts here and there which aids the storytelling flow.

I feel the anime is capturing Junpei's character quite well. He IS a normal immature 14 year-old teenager. Behaves accordingly. Without a clear guiding presence in his life, he gets pulled easily by others to join them in activities that strike his fancy. That's likely how he has a good social life in school and has a circle of friends that hangs with him. He was pulled back into ballet by Miyako because he thought that she liked him but later finds out that she really wants a ballet partner to dance with and to pull her shut-in cousin, Luou, along and be friends with. This discourages him as he avoids ballet and falls back to his usual activities. However, the ballet/dance spark has been ignited in him. This is shown in that walk back home at night that he spontaneously breaks into a well-animated dance. He will eventually need to make a decision on the competing pulls.

I was very, very impressed with that episode. This show is seriously underrated as far as I'm concerned.

It's a sports anime focuses on ballet with shoujo tropes and a main male character with an actual personality this will always be a tough sell for western audience. Personally I'm loving it, MAPPA is clearly going all in on the ballet animation (I wonder if they're using the rotoscoping technique?) and it looks marvelous but my biggest gripe I feel like the pacing is a bit too fast for my personal taste. You can tell they're adapting lots of chapters because there are several moments which just screams this is where a manga chapter ended such as the train scene or the main character ballet dancing under the street lights.

Also for those who are curious insert song is called Rosie by The Roosters.

The general sentiment on Reddit is one with praise. I can understand the art style is different concerning the eyes, but it's actually quite reminiscent of some older anime from the 90s (similar to Kodomo no Omocha/MarmaladeC Boy). It was definitely surprising for me to see, but I guess having watched those older anime back then, I wasn't too off put.

Comedic humor is mostly on point. What i really like about the first two episodes is the fluidity of the movements, and the character to character interactions. We have Jumpei vs Miyako's mom. We have Jumpei and Miyako, and then Jumpei vs Luou. Even his sister plays a role early on regarding the barre. Also, at the recital, when they met Miyako's friend's family, some of the girls had looks of disdain, the mom had a neutral look, and the friend was the excited one. Subtle things like that where they showed varied reactions towards Jumpei was nicely appreciated because it shows even side characters are real and not static.

But the most interesting thing to me is Jumpei's identity crisis. He gets roped into so many things and thinks/acts like a normal/hormonal teenager, but soon he's going to have to face all of these competing priorities head on. How he does that, and deals with the angst, frustration, criticism, possible shame, and confidence issues will be the real story here, and I hope they convey it as well as they illustrate the dance movements.

I think it's because that after the 1st episode, the number of people who are interested in the show has shrunk after separating those who still have interest in the show. Enough of them comment to acknowledge their appreciation. The simple fact that the series deals with ballet has substantially winnowed the audience to those who are open to give it a try before the 1st episode aired.

There will not be much interest in this forum too. Attention as usual will be on shows where there are more cute girls in focus. Male ballet? Hah! You can see the orthodox masculinity in the show happening in here in real time.

I never would have pegged it going in, but I think it’s actually the best show of the season through 2 episodes.

What are those lines supposed to represent? Reflections? Don't see that in real-life myself. I still find them incredibly off-putting.

That was a painful episode to watch, not because it was bad but simply because the bullying felt too real. I'm glad that part is now over.
