IS it true on the 40 wire ATA cable the master drive goes to the middle connector and the slave goes to the end connector. Also is it true for the 80 wire ATA cable the master drive is at the end connector and the slave is in the middle connector?

I never really thought of it like this. However, unless your ribbon is for a Cable Select PC, I do not think it matters. Overall, the jumpers on the devices have to be set appropriately to match your system configuration.

Never found it to matter, as long as the jumpers set correctly. And I've done it both ways because I always try to make the cables as organised as possible.

If your jumper is selected on "cable" setting, i guess it's true that the middle is the master one...
