Plot
The anime's tagline is "Once, the fairies were weapons."

The anime is set in a world where fairies possess and reside within animals, granting them special powers. By surgically removing and transplanting the organs of a possessed animal into a human, humans can partially summon the fairy and use it as a weapon. Eventually, such individuals were used for war, and were called "Fairy Soldiers." After a long war, these soldiers lost their purpose, and had to reintegrate into society. From the government, to the mafia, and even becoming terrorists, each tread their own path.

The story begins nine years after the end of the war, and centers on the protagonist Maria. Maria is a fresh recruit of "Dorothea," an organization dedicated to the investigation and suppression of fairy-related crimes and incidents. Even in peacetime, the government is still unstable after the war. Many criminals still have lingering wounds from the previous conflict, and there are terrorist groups bent on revenge. This is the story of Fairy Soldiers seeking their own justice in a chaotic postwar world.

Very nice OP song, I dig the style of it.

I thought the episode was fairly interesting. It has a mixture of magic and supernatural content. Production quality is good and I even like the soundtrack.

That Veronica girl is a badass when she came out of nowhere for her attack. Also saw some parts of her past which definitely gave a sense of tragedy. There's a decent amount of action already in this episode so I expect this to be a mix of supernatural/fantasy-action thriller.

Really cool episode imo.

MC is proactive which is good but her desire to get reunited with Veronica despite the situation irritated me. I hope she get the character progress later.

A lot of people did not like tthe first ep but for me it was decent.

P.S.: Why the heck Funy subs called MC Marlya instead of Mariya? It sounds especially funny in Russian as "marlya" means "cheesecloth".

Liked it, the strong bgm and lyrics suited the scenes well.

Can I assume the fairies are modeled after actual fairy tales?
With the army guy being the big bad wolf? not sure about the other two.

I like the way Mariya carries herself. I feel like the whole Veronica just running off instead of talking for 5 minutes which would solve everything is going to feel old if they don't handle it well.

May have been a translation that was dictated to them by Toho or whoever they got the license from. Not sure how else they would arrive at "Marlya" when translating...

I liked the first episode, a good point in original anime is that there will not topics with old discussion of how the adaptations are horribles because it is different from the manga or novel. And we can all surprise ourselves weekly now.

The thing is that her name is written in katakana "マーリヤ" on the official site and "Mariya" is the only reading I can think of. I can only presume that similar symbols "i" and "l" were mixed up in the script.

I can see マーリヤ as Marlya if the intended pronunciation is "Mar-Lee-Ya".

I dunno, I learned long ago not to be too rigid with katakana "foreign" names in anime, manga and video games because it's not uncommon for the official English spellings to be unexpected and dumb.

I like PA Works CGI though, and the art direction overall. Sucks that this is only on Funimation, but I'll still try to keep up with it.

Okay start but I'd rather they established the setting first than throw us straight into it. Because right now all I can do is wonder at the rather glaring plot hole that young Veronica basically abandoned young Mariya in a burning forest (and for no logical reason) yet adult Mariya is still smitten with her.

The characters also feel weirdly disconnected from the outer world. Apparently Mariya joined a mafia family but they're not important enough to have names and faces and the dude's just a lone wolf to begin with.

In a way this show's beginning kinda reminds me of how The Sacred Star of Milos began except that film did it way better. On a side note, that film wasn't very well received but I liked it...

I liked it, the fairies were pretty cool and the artstyle is great as well. Cute Marlya and cool Free gonna make badass fairy partners that's for sure.

It was surprising to see QUALITY (the running scene mentioned above) in the first episode of a P.A works show. It was just one scene and the rest looked good if not great, but it still worries me a bit. We'll see how it goes.

The setting is interesting. I guess becoming a stand use- I mean, a fairy holder, is not as easy as Mariya made it look. One thing I liked about the Fairies is that they appear to have special abilities, which should hopefully make fights interesting. Incidentally, it seemed quite reckless for Free to get into a swordfight with Veronica when her fairy can instantly kill you if you get an open wound. He should have taken the rifle from Mariya.

Free's got a wolf as a fairy and it's his old teammate that's named Wolf? Wut.

Decent start, but the entire conversation Mariya and Free were having before Veronica felt really awkward and clunky. Also, I hope the chase after Veronica doesn't take up the entire story.

I'm impressed that they could make an action anime this boring.
I think the general direction is a mess, but the biggest problem to me probably is the annoying protagonist.
It doesn't help that the character designs are Western-ish, thus none of the characters are cute, so there isn't even eyecandy.

That, and the hilarious running animation.

BTW, what language is the OP in? I understand Japanese and English, but it didn't sound like either. More like someone trying to sing in a foreign language... Engrish?
