Welp, we're definitely not going to see them climb Mt. Fuji again this season after all. They have to wait almost a year. That didn't kill Aoi's momentum though. She's still moving forward and planning to train.
And damn, hiking shoes are expensive.

Not exactly impulse. She was really struggling with the idea, because as stated it's her own hard-earned money. Yes, she was planning on spending it on other things that amount to cheap semi-impulse goods, but still this decision was an investment made with a good degree of hesitation.
I do like how anytime she buys equipment the best choice starts to glow like a gift from the gods. |

I think Ep 3 may be my favorite yet. Aoi hiking alone reminds me of my own experiences - including feeling like you're about to die but then feeling pumped when you reach the top. Plus I too make onigiri to take on hikes (in my own "gringo style," though). They're very convenient.
I still say Japanese mountains are incredibly civilized. No shrines on top of the mountains around here, unless you count the observatory on Mount Wilson. Most times, you're lucky if you find a box with a logbook to sign. |

I thought the episode would have Aoi hiking alone the entire time, which I wouldn't have minded, but I was happy Kokona joined her and made her first real appearance in this season. It was a very big coincidence (to the point I thought Hinata had told her to come), but I don't mind in this instance.
And yes, Japan seems to take good care of its mountains. I'm not an outdoor guy so I can't compare with how it is over here though.

all of japan is incredibly civilized and clean. there is no litter on the street even though there are like never a garbage bin around. the subway is also clean, not vandalized and there is no tag or anything. coming from france it was a huge chock to me when i visited.
as for the ep i liked it, but aoi is really dangerous sometimes with going alone on a hike, without telling her mother she was alone, without telling anyone of her exact route and i think without a gps able smartphone. nothing happened but it could go wrong. i really like kokona so i liked her appearance. it seem she happen to be coincidentally at the same spot has our main duo a lot though ^^ (she even traumatized them with the firefly costume ) |

I never knew anime fandom had its own version of The Onion, but apparently it does. This past weekend, they posted this:
Area Man Inspired by ‘Yama no Susume’ Already Regretting Everything The last line is my favorite. |

The various seasons of the anime do make it clear that mountain climbing is not easy. Also that it is generally much more fun when done with other people who you get along with. Solo climbing (and, for that matter, solo camping) requires a certain mindset to enjoy, and is not for everyone.

I loved the latest episode. It is very well narrated, in the way it pays attention to the gradual change in Aoi. The scene of her conversation with that girl is excellent in execution, and the whole karaoke sequence made this even better.
This series is one of the most irregular I've seen, but it knows how to do slice of life and character-focused narrative. I wish it could prove this more often. |

Many years ago, when my now-teenage oldest niece was about five or six, I brought a film camera to the family's annual July 4th gathering. She didn't know what it was. "How do you see the picture?" she asked, staring at the back of it.
Do they still have a lot of film and Polaroid cameras in Japan? Meanwhile, hooray for Honoka the camera nerd! I learned all those photo terms when I was about her age. |

The kids not knowing what film is makes me feel so old.
A beautiful location they went to this time, and some really beautiful pictures, both of it and of themselves. They all look really good in those princess outfits, although I'd say it probably looked most natural on Kokona. I also liked the little reminder that Aoi is still scared of heights. Yes, she's learned how to push through it when it comes to mountain climbing, but that sort of fear isn't something that just goes away, at least not without some dedicated effort.

The girls looked so cute as princesses, especially Kokona and Honoka.

In the context of the anime, given that it was Kokona of all people who had a film camera and the fact she isn't a photography enthusiast, I'm pretty sure she only had that camera because she's poor. The Japanese tracked down the model and it costs like 10 bucks.

That looks like a disposable camera: they're supposed to be cheap. The idea is you buy one prior to whatever event you want to photograph, take pictures until it's full, then get them developed and never see the camera again. It's not designed to replace film or anything like that. Plenty of people who aren't poor use (or used) those, simply because they didn't take enough pictures to justify buying a better/more expensive/reusable camera.

The one thing I miss about old film cameras in general is the sounds of the knob as you'd wind your film to the next slide.
I don't know if they have a lot of film and insta camera's in Japan, but they aren't that hard to come by online, and a lot of the new ones also come with digital capabilities as well like bluetooth. I've been eyeing a Polaroid one myself, just for fun.
