Houseki no Kuni (Land of the Lustrous) Anticipation

Quote:
The July issue of Kodansha's Afternoon magazine is announcing on May 25 that a television anime adaptation of Haruko Ichikawa's Land of the Lustrous (Hōseki no Kuni) manga has been green-lit.
Plot Summary/Premise
Quote:
The manga's story takes place in the distant future, where a new life form called "hōseki" (gems) is born. The 28 gems must fight against the "tsukijin" (moon people) who want to attack them and turn them into decorations, so each gem is assigned a role such as a fighter or a medic. Although she hopes to fight the moon people, Phos is a gem who is given no assignment until the gems' manager Kongo asks her to edit a natural history magazine.

Man, this series is going to be one hell of a day for official translators considering the gems are genderless.

We have a word for that though.
Just call it an "it"

I remember trying to read this one a while ago and it ... not working for me for some reason.

Maybe the passage of time and a different medium might make a difference?

Eh...it's more difficult than that. The art does an amazing job of capturing their androgyny. It's like watching a bunch of really good traps. You're never quite sure if they are female or not. The only one that is obviously masculine (in terms of body type) is the Sensei.

Here's a promo vid that Kodansha did for the first volume of the manga. The anime will probably be very similar to this:

I guess what will be fascinating is whom will this be marketed towards to. Like if any of these gems ended up as pinups in Megami or Nyantype, then it's clear!

I think we'll have to wait for the first promo's to see how much effort they're putting into it.

oh I see what you mean but don't they state that the gems are genderless in the story itself? The proper term for that is "it". Though I think they are more feminine than androgynous based on the way they are drawn here.

From what I remember (I read a volume or so way back, I guess this is another series where I'll just wait for the anime) the manga uses masculine pronouns/words to refer to them (ie. "boku", "kare", "oniisan", etc.). So the translation can just follow that.

("It" is definitely not really the ideal term, IMO. It makes it sound like they're objects.)

Hmm ... I also wonder if this one will be an "all-cgi" production ... although another of the links on the website itself goes to a page showing four or five of the characters running ... and I guess it kinda looks animated ... for what that is worth?

If you mean this that's a page from the manga.

It's hard to judge if it's full cgi based on that visual, imo. I certainly hope they don't go that route though.

My reason and I'm going to assume Flowers' as well for postulating our question is because Orange is known for CGI, it's pretty much their forte. So the fact that they seem to be the main studio in charge makes me think there's a high chance that it'll be full CG.
