And your point is? I mean, I don't really know that milieu, but don't you think an Ivy League educated trophy wife would score more points than a mail order trophy wife? Or that Stanford would be a good place to hunt for potential husbands?

I get that there is risk in letting her go there, but if the Shinomiya family is so powerful, should that really be an issue? My point is, not letting Kaguya go to Stanford sounds downright unambitious for a family like hers.

Brother is pretty closed-minded and conservative due to the old way of thinking. He also said how men don't want to marry a smarter woman.

Shirogane is 100% expecting this to happen
There is no way that he isn't planning something already
just like what he said before, he will fight to get his Kaguya instead of waiting patiently

beating the older bro would be tough
I expect Shirogane will appear as contender during Shinomiya succession to challenge all the brothers

You must be under the mistaken assumption that he cares

He didn't even know which university it was.

Again, that's not a trophy wife. If a woman has enough merit to stand on her own reputation without her husband, then that's... a normal human being.
What the Shinomiyas want is a Yamato Nadeshiko housewife. Someone who is just there to be a pretty face and take care of her husband.

They never had any ambition for Kaguya in the first place.

The takeaway being, he's planning to marry her off to some guy who didn't go an Ivy League school.

Going to a top university isn't enough merit to stand on her own. If she doesn't use it as a springboard for her career, it's just an empty decoration, and thus proper for a trophy wife.

And I didn't mean ambition for Kaguya to succeed. I meant ambition for getting the most use of her as a pawn. That would mean, in turn, marrying her off to a guy who'd see "Stanford graduate" as more of a bare minimum rather than an intimidatingly impressive achievement.

He's planning to marry her off to some crony to increase his influence in the family. He would never let her marry someone with any ambition like that, since it's just creating another rival for himself.

And we're back to "unambitious". Cementing an alliance with a family of the same caliber would be of greater value than rewarding a crony, for the family if not the brother in particular. (And it gets her out of the family, in a way, if they're afraid of competition for the succession. Especially if the husband isn't Japanese.)

This is possible but any "family of the same caliber" wouldn't be interested in her because of her education, but her pedigree.

Even if they did insist on her having a degree, they could always send her off to some small private college and let her get some useless degree.

The reason the brother is stopping her from going abroad is simply because once she experiences real freedom away from her family and gets a Stanford degree that would open all the doors in the world for her, it would become near impossible to control her anymore.

That'd make it more important to polish her.

That's not at all the same as a degree from a prestigious university. In terms of, well, prestige.

If that's all it takes to set her free, the Shinomiya family isn't nearly as powerful as described.

Not really. It wouldn't make much of a difference to those kinds of people.

Prestige is a far secondary concern than bloodline to these kinds of people.

If the Shinomiyas were all powerful, the Shijous wouldn't exist. You can get away from them, that's exactly why he's making sure she can't do it ahead of time.

I'd say he's ambitious, but also cautious. Sure he wants to marry her to someone important to build ties to other powerful institutions, but he wants to do so in a way that will give him power over said institutions. The way Kaguya herself was taught to approach interpersonal relationships makes it pretty clear that this is the preferred path for the Shinomiyas. He wouldn't want to marry Kaguya to someone that's strong, smart, skilled and ambitious, as such a person would try to gain influence over him instead of just being his puppet and enjoying the "influence" he gives him. So it seems natural that he'd want to keep Kaguya from getting an education that could make her "superior" to such men. Not to mention that, as Kaguya said, he's very much set in the mindset of women being mere tools who shouldn't desire anything besides marrying a "good" man and bearing and raising children.

Well, I'm betting Kaguya will show some surprising success working people off each other to gain power, but I'm fairly sure she'll need help. It's hardly ever a good idea to say "I need to do this alone", especially when dealing with someone or something as powerful as this. Here's hoping that Hayasaka puts two and two together and does whatever she can, as well as Miyuki. Together, along with maybe even some others, they just might be able to pull this off.

We still get some comedy chapters, they are usually sandwiched between the drama arcs.

Japanese cultural norms are not the same as Western norms. Yes, you are correct that a college degree is not the same as a successful career. Anyone who has been there is painfully aware of it.
But for someone who is raised and succeeded in a bygone era, an Ivy League school is an intimidatingly impressive achievement. Even if realistically we can imagine the possibility of a university graduate being unemployed, an Asian boomer won't.

Second, even if we entertain that point where Kaguya graduates from Stanford and still becomes a housewife, just the fact that she has an Ivy League degree means that she has enough leverage and reputation to eventually springboard her own career and leave her husband, should their relationship go awry. Kaguya will not be forever dependent on her husband regardless.

Also given Oko's reaction, it's obvious that he has zero knowledge about the United States, so it's doubtful that he could ever find anyone who doesn't romanticize a prestigious degree anyway.

And that's a whole other problem for someone who wants to inherit an international conglomerate.

They're not really an international conglomerate.

During the Kashiwagi's porn DVD chapter, it's mentioned that the Shinomiyas exploited the domestic market during Japan's economic bubble to remain dominant in Japan, while the Shijos are the ones who expanded overseas.
The Shinomiyas are strictly Japanese. You can even see that everytime their family estate is shown that it always as an old tradition Showa era aesthetic.

In any case, it doesn't change that Oko is in favorable position of power right now as the eldest son and has little incentive to change to accomodate others.

Let me give some insight why a highly educated wife is a negative. I personally prefer to have a wife that earns less than me or less educated than me. The idea is that I can control the wife more easily due to my superiority. A more highly educated wife might have higher expectations and most importantly, more difficult to handle.

If the basis of the wife is for the connection of the families and just to have children, then such attributes are just a burden.

Just to note Kaguya is not a trophy wife. She is a political marriage tool to combine the might of wealthy families.

Lol, leave it to Fujiwara to smash all the superserious stuff with a sledgehammer of Ramen 4 Emperor story. Love how she is even not the main focus in a chapter where she is the sole student council member in it, though that was to be expected from a Ramen chapter. That ending though, "threw up like crazy", lol. xD
