Nagi may not live in a world with magic or existence manipulation, but it's still a mythical fantasy for us. Remember that time when she threw 20 trillion yen down the drain in a red herring investment story that her grandfather made up as a prank? That magnitude of money can swallow the budget deficit of governments struggling with the recession in reality. That incident was when she was a child. To call her a 'rich girl' is injustice. Nagi Sanzen'in has transcended materialism: she's not interested in acquiring even more riches she will inherit when her grandfather dies. She knows full well that more money will not bring her happiness and she earns her own 'pocket money' by dealing with the stock market.

With the modern world following the philosophy of Capitalism, most people spend a lot of time thinking about money. Ordinarily rich people think even more about money - how to earn more, how to get the most out of investments, evaluating potentials and keeping on top of how other people are doing with their money. Nagi does not let herself get shackled by such mundane chains. Anyone else in her position would be scheming for how to defend their lives so they can get the inheritence and possibly nurturing some big ambitions for some megaproject to leave their mark on the world by the time they die. Nagi is bored of all that and feels no such temptations.

So what gives meaning to life for her? She found it in the world of otaku. A society which doesn't revolve around money like the myriad of other societies out there. Instead of money, the otaku machine is fuelled by passion. It is little wonder Nagi is drawn to this realm - they may not have transcended materialism but they don't care about it just as Nagi does not. She does not use her financial position as an 'unfair advantage' when dealing with the otaku society: namely, she doesn't bribe judges when she submits manga she's made with her own hands without assistants. Nor is she trying to put herself in a monarch's seat in the otaku industries either. Struggling against the judges and fellow applicants, spending hours on 2ch debating after amassing vast amounts of lore, pulling all-nighters to finish the latest projects - living the life of otaku passion is what keeps Nagi from dying by ennui.

This puts her in a double lonely life, and her other circumstances make that quadruple lonely. Being impossibly rich, most people she meets hang around her for money and connections. Being an otaku, while she has 2ch to keep her company on the Net, they don't exactly come out of the woodworks much except for the occasional events and trips to Akihabara. As she's a student, she cannot live life like a true otaku who goes on frequent trips - her staff may tolerate her occasionally skipping school but they won't tolerate her spending that time on trips. Since she has skipped 3 years in school, her classmates are the wrong age group and half of them aren't intelligent enough to keep up with her even if the age gap wasn't an issue. Add to this the fact she's an orphan: her parents have passed away.

Ok, she's not completely alone. She does have a few friends her age who also have enough riches to not be concerned of hers. She has Maria by her side. But it's all... ephemeral to her. Some day, Maria will fall in love with a man and move out to live as a wife. Kraus will retire some year. Tama-chan chooses not to reveal his sentience to her. Friends are friends - they are not family companions, there will always be some distance between them. Her SP staff? Faceless goons to her, mooks don't count. Maybe she can find someone out there? Uh, most people are either shallow leeches or would-be kidnappers to her - pointlessly high risk-to-reward ratio.

Thus Hayate is her only hope for a companion who will remain by her side in the end. A guy 3 years older than her who confessed to her. For a 13 year old, that's good enough reason to be infatuated with him. Not true love and likely Nagi knows this is the case. It just so happens this boy is good at saving her when she needs him. He brings the promise of warmth to her otherwise bleak future. Sadly, she doesn't know it's all a misunderstanding. Also, it just so happens he's not a lolicon so he won't make a move on her for a few years. What Nagi does know is that he's getting rather side tracked for someone who confessed to her.

Money cannot buy true loyalty and love. Nagi knows better than to use money to try and force the issue. Living a sheltered life (out of self-preservation necessity) she doesn't have enough experience (or common sense) to attempt to capture his heart deftly. Her young body is a severe disadvantage to her right now and she may not have time to wait out the growth period of adolescence before everyone around her leaves her side. Amidst all this, she can't exactly ditch her one joy in life either - and otaku life requires a lot of time investment.

In this race against an unknown deadline, Nagi desperately seeks a solution that will avoid her future. At times she lashes out when there is threat of him eloping with another girl. Other times, she's engaging in friendly banter with him. Hayate doesn't exactly have it easy either so it's not surprising their emotions get the better of them at times.

Now, after having said all that about Nagi...

Veteran vs rookie. That's all it boils down to. I have the feeling that Nagi won't give up her place so easily and while Mafuyu has been surprising, this will be her toughest match to date. It'll be really close. I hope Mafuyu can pull it off though.

Of the 4 characters I have written up about, she is the only one whose story is complete. She also lives in the most ordinary environment of the 4, though by no means is it mundane. Her parents are alive but she gets no warmth from them: a mother who divorced and moved out; a father who simply funds her to keep her alive as a matter of basic social duty. Likely due to having had servants tend to her in her childhood, she has no domestic skills whatsoever and can't even think to sweep or vacuum her room of dust.

Having a name that really stands out and a short height to go with it means she was easy pickings to tease as she grew up. Humans, especially children, are social creatures and fitting in the group often means not standing out. This is doubly the case in Japanese culture where not standing out is a big deal. Group teasing is a mechanism to attempt to 'correct' something that stands out in an individual through application of shame - or so says a theory about how it originated to maintain tribal unity in ancient times when working together was essential for survival. But you can't 'correct' short height (no, don't talk about steel disc implantation into leg bones). As with Louise, a defence mechanism needed to be established and Taiga chose the same. Actually, Taiga chose to be more intensive with it: while Louise had to keep some standards of civiility up as a noble, Taiga went feral. She forged a reputation such that those who even cherished the thought of teasing her would get in a world of pain.

Of course, going that far with your defence mechanism has a high price, but Taiga is a klutz behind it all so restraint isn't her specialty. At the start, there are only 2 people in her school life she cares about and both are oddballs. Only oddballs, free thinkers happy to explore outside the group think territory, could get close to Taiga and in Yuusaku's case he got shot down by her klutz-boosted defence mechanism when he tried to confess. Into this starting point, Ryuuji is introduced and plot-circumstances get them to start cooperating in a 'business relationship'. Ok, said relationship happened to have perks of getting fed and free domestic maintenance but this is still under 'customer service' in a 'business relationship'.

Time passes. Taiga upgrades Ryuuji from "a tool I have on blackmail leash" to "someone I am comfortable around, where I can let down my hair-trigger feral guard and relax". Through Ryuuji's cooperation, she gets more encounters with Yuusaku which also lets her step out of "I am feral berserker, I must bite anyone who would hurt me" mode more often. She gets a 'very special antagonist' in Ami who can fight back and put up a good sparring match in Social Combat. That relationship could have gone to "kill on sight" enemies but thanks to Ryuuji and Yuusaku it instead turned to "bicker-buddies".

Her reputation has been changing too as time passed. People still respectfully fear her feral streak but they start to realise there's more to her than that. The beauty contest and the Pro Wrestling Play at the festival shocked the common students into this realisation. Some of her classmates start to interact with her on a regular basis. By the end of her story, Taiga has changed her reputation with her classmates so much, they all whip out their phones and text her their feelings when they learn she suddenly transferred away. Heck, by the epilogue she became so much of a too-awesome-to-be-true legend, some junior students doubted she even existed. A very long way to have come given her starting point of "the tiger nobody wants to get close to".

A spiral of progress is observed, just like with Shana and Louise. In those two's cases, their love interest became more l33t both socially and in combat as they gradually accepted the fact they do in fact have (growing) feelings for him. In Taiga's case, the spiral is wider: she doesn't need to keep her guard up so often, her social status changes all while she grows closer to Yuuji. As the spiral advances in time, Taiga (and Ami) get more involved with group activities. Who would have thought those two would have pulled a duet after secret rehearsals?

Then the turning point comes. Yuusaku's kokuhaku to Sumire-kaichou. After beating the truth out of Sumire in a fight of mutual KO, Taiga realises there is no hope for her dream of a romance with him. She knows he'll follow her to the US, albeit with a detour to graduate from high school first. At the same time, she becomes painfully aware that she yearned for Yuuji. Not a hot passioned, teenage hormone driven crush like with Yuusaku, but a serious dependency on him for companionship: a condition we also shove under the horribly vague and wide term 'love'.

Taiga and Minorin both face dilemmas at this point. In Taiga's case, she wants her friend to be happy and she now knows Ryuuji is a good man for the job. It would make Ryuuji happy too. But she also wants him for herself. BADLY. While Taiga is in this mess, Minorin is also in serious pain. She KNOWS Ryuuji is taking far too much care of Taiga to not have any feelings at all. She's aware of how her best friend feels about him. She's also aware she herself is falling for him too - Taiga's cooperation bore fruit for Yuuji. Yet she has a dream to make it big in the world of sports and she can't achieve both that and a romance. This would all be solved if those two would JUST GET THE FUCK TOGETHER but they're playing this weird 'house' game of pseudo-family and pretending not to acknowledge the situation. Despite not being a klutz like Taiga, Minorin wasn't so good at containing that stress and it causes even more pain as she messes up more and more.

Toradora isn't a fantasy Super Type story where characters kick reason to the curb and drill through all limitations. There is no fancy magic or lulzy mad science in this series (unlike the other three's cases). It's a smack of reality that people are forced to make choices because they cannot grasp everything they want simultaneously.

The final step of development for Taiga is a lesson she learnt together with Ryuuji: running away isn't the best solution to problems, only a delay. When they're about to elope and Yasuko beats them to the punch, they realise this. Seeing Ryuuji fit into his newly discovered extended family (Yasuko's parents), Taiga acknowledges that she needs to stop running from her own family problems. She'd been using Ryuuji to fill the void for family when she always had her mother to turn to if she'd just reached out. It wouldn't be easy starting a new life with an estranged family member who had already re-married, but Taiga had experienced first hand how obstacles like this can be overcome. So as to have a more balanced married life in the future, Taiga chose to take the painful medicine for the short term suffering. Like Minorin, it was a matter of choice - she wanted to patch up her family troubles but she could not do that without parting with everyone at school. She trusted Ryuuji to accept this without consulting with him first and he met up to her trust. It's not as if they never met after she transferred out until that graduation scene.

Round 4 starts today. Only the best of the best have managed to make it this far. After the Block Winners were shuffled to make the Top 8 bracket, we got Sanzen'in Nagi vs Shiina Mafuyu to kick things off. After what seemed like a fluke win against Hinagiku in Round 1, Mafuyu went to win two more matches to prove she really was a top level competitor. She easily defeated Saki in Round 2 and got past Hitagi in Round 3. Mafuyu probably had one of the tougher roads to the Top 8. Sanzen'in Nagi on the other hand hasn't really been challenged at all so far. Nagi was a mile ahead of her Round 1 and Round 2 opponents. Althought Nadeko was supposed to challenge Nagi, that turned out to be a flop although that could be blamed more on Nagi putting up an impressive 960 votes than Nadeko slacking off. Interestingly in Round 3, Nagi fought Yuno who was just behind Mafuyu in preliminaries while Mafuyu was up against the character just behind Nagi, Hitagi. Not much of a comparison can be drawn from this, though since Yuno got last place factor'd in her match with Nagi and Nadeko. If you compare performances through the Bakemonogatari characters, things don't look good for Mafuyu. Nadeko was expected to be the strongest Bakemonogatari character. Even if she wasn't, she probably wasn't too far behind Hitagi. Nagi blasted Nadeko while Mafuyu has trouble with Hitagi. Comparing through Hayate characters is more favorable to Mafuyu. Hinagiku is the strongest Hayate character and Mafuyu already beat her. I'm starting to believe Mafuyu vs Hinagiku was the real deal so I'm going with Mafuyu on this match.


My prediction:
Mafuyu - 51.50%
Nagi - 48.50%

I'm voting for Shiina Mafuyu.
