Tried to pin down an Internet source, but I can't find the supposed anime official site (part of which is in the linked image).
Twitter does seem to talk about the NHK-SHAFT teamup, so I guess it isn't some troll.

Okay: Otakomu has a report about it: https://twitter.com/otakomu/status/684249836464410625
EDIT: Turns out that it also links to the tweet by earlbox.

This is another related site. The image itself has the anime site linked (I think) but not entirely sure if it's online yet.

http://3lion.younganimal.com/

ANN confirms it.

Studio is Shaft.
Akiyuki Shinobu will be director.
It's going to air (unknown date/season) on NHK.

Edit: name corrected to Shinobu

At this point I don't even know if Shinbo doing this show is a good thing or a bad thing. If Rei twists his neck while playing Shogi I'm going to go out and punch babies.

Shaft did an exquisite job animating Koufuku Graffiti. They definitely have the potential to do a good job on this, so I would not go into keening mode just yet.

I prayed to Jeebus that I'd slept for three months, and woke up on April 1st. Alas, it was not to be.

Sangatsu no lion is not a series you pretend your top shit by using gimmicky shortcut techniques and make characters headtilt for no reason. If I want arthouse or avant garde MAPPA or Tatsuonko or even Toei are much better at it.

But more importantly its not even that kind of series in the first place. Its a very straightforward, subdued and honest series which doesnt need all the fake whizzbang to make it great... in fact it would go against it. It would have been in the safest hands in either JC Staff or A1 Pictures which is what i was actually expecting but alas we will instead see shinbo smear his trololol all over it.

This seems to be the anime domain for the official series btw (not working at the moment):

Sorry, no - this is an unmitigated disaster. Even if you aren't bothered by the fact that Shibou more than any other single director is responsible for and emblematic of the creative strangulation of anime, he's totally wrong for Sangatsu. It doesn't need to be reimagined or otakufied - it's a very straightforward and subtle story with a lot of dignity. Shinbou is constitutionally incapable of that kind of treatment and he's spent a career proving it.

As horrendous as this is, it's even more inexplicable. Who could possibly have thought this was a good idea?

I wouldnt go as far and say hes responsible for the destruction of creativity in anime. Although I still maintain that both monogatari and madoka were actually pretty bad in terms of visuals, the shaft visual style did fit the tone and approach they were trying to go for. Same with series like ef tale of memories and sayonara zetsubou sensei. And although a person may have different subjective opinions on whether they liked the series or not you cant deny they were very effective for their respective target audiences.

The problem however is two fold. The first is that shinbo is in sunmary a one trick pony. Doesnt matter what type of series or genre it is, the appraoch and style is pretty monotonous and singular in style. You talk about the homogenization problem for kyoto animation. Kyoani has actually diversified in approach sometimes (like in hyouka or the tamako market movie). Shinbo and shaft on the hand from my memory has not.

The second problem like you said is the complete mismatch in compatibility between sangatsu as a series and shaft and shinbo as director/studio. I dont know what kind of drugs were used to broker this arrangement but it must be some serious nasty stuff.

Looking forward to this, but the director for this, man I hope he doesn't try his wacky samey shit. Works for some stuff, but man.

Unless i am mistaken i cant think of a single shaft series ive watched in the last 5 or so years that didnt have his "wacky samey shit" smeared all over it.

Koufuku Graffiti, to an extent. Shin Oonuma's rendition of Tasogare Otome x Amnesia was far more SHAFT-like in comparison.

Well that's unexpected. Have to admit I would have hoped for at least some of the staff who made "Honey and Clover" to be involved in this, but I like most of Shinbou's stuff so I'll not be joining the doom and gloom side of this argument and prefer to wait and see what the actual product looks like.

Koufuku Graffiti was the least SHAFT-y SHAFT show in ages.

Now that I look at it again: NHK is airing Sangatsu, which mean it is most likely govt' funded daytime shoe. That should hold Shinbou from being too artsy with his directing.

I don't know, if you ask Shinbo to direct something is because you like that kind of style

If I ask a director to direct for a show for Japanese mainstream audience, I'll make sure to told him to make it accessible and not too "out there".

But it just me throwing guess, we will know when the show aired. As anime-only watcher for this series, I am interested on how it will turn out.

As it is airing on NHK and I assume getting 'mainstream' treatment – as NHK seems to have finally realized that anime is a thing now and given recent examples such as anime corner on Kouhaku, seems to be willing to invest on it – I can almost see how the meeting that decided this turned out.

See, producers sitting on a table trying to decide on a manga.

– "Hey, what about this 'Sangatsu no Lion' thing? It seems pretty popular and would definitely be a hit with the mainstream audience!"
– "Great idea, man! What now? Who do we get to handle the adaptation?"
– "Let's see... oh man, these SHAFT guys, and this Shinbo dude, check out those Monogatari sales! Clearly they're what we need to make a hit!"

And thus Sangatsu + SHAFT/Shibno was born.

That's literally the only explanation I can come up with to explain this disaster. I held off from following the manga because I knew an anime would be made somewhere down the line and I expected it to be great – to honour Umino-sensei's and Hachikuro's legacy. I would never, ever, have expected this to happen. It's just unbelievable.

Words cannot express how sad I am over these news...

Even if you do go by that logic, it brings up the other question: why would you get someone like Shinbo, in the first place, if you want something accessible and not 'too out there'? You're forcing a guy to try his hand at something he's clearly not fit for, whereas you could have gotten like any other person who'd be a better fit for this piece.
