I just started playing it. Isn't Shadowverse like this big fantasy series, but here it seems like your average card game anime ?

Yu-gi-oh will always be remembered for inspiring protagonist with two-toned hair .

Sad it's not about Arisa and the others, but you likely wouldn't be able to make it a card game anime. Oh boy, I need to see this to see how it goes. No doubt Protag and other characters will later be leader skins, and the dragon is new I think.

I disagree with you all.

I'd have much preferred an adaptation of the game's story than yet another "kids play cards" anime. Especially with cards that don't exist.

Have nothing but time these days so I've actually been watching this. It's not bad, but nothing special (odd it's still in "upcoming" on its second season). I sort of figured they'd end up with some sort of supernatural bit to it, seems to be almost guaranteed with this sort of series. Not a bad thing really, when done well having the game become real can improve the intensity. That said, honestly this didn't seem to play it well. Other series you have little hints from time to time leading up to the shift from kids playing a card game to actual battles for the fate of the world, but here they just go from casual play to a tournament, then a bigger tournament, and once the number of contestants reaches a limit the boss says "yeah the prize was a lie, actually a demonic force is about to destroy the world and we need you to use your card skills to beat it". I like some of the characters enough to find this a nice way to waste some time, but seriously the plot could've been handled much better.

I've been watching it, and it basically feels like a complete make-over of the original Yu-Gi-Oh.

Not terrible, but nothing to write home about either. And like with any anime aimed at kids, really just for promoting the game itself.

Agreed. I don't really mind series made mostly "just to sell toys", as long as they're actually serious about making the kids really like the show as well. I especially love ones that try to dive all the way into the world, not just having the people playing a game and then supernatural elements appear making the game impact reality but actually having the characters in the world of the game (like mon games' anime often taking place in the mons' universe and Aquarian Age anime actually having the MC be not a player pretending to collect character cards but an actual guy discovering his power in the midst of a secret war); that said, I don't have a problem with stories where things like this and the Yu-Gi-Oh series. But taking an expected development like real-world threats just suddenly happen without any warning or build-up is disappointing and makes me think they're not all that serious. Oh well, still mildly entertaining and that's more than enough for me.

As YGO Abridged put it: Saving the world... through a Children's Card Game.

At least this only appears to be a city that needs to be saved, and not some world-level disaster (not sure since I'm watching the Japanese broadcast version)

I'm not really sure this is aimed at kids when the playerbase are mainly grown men and the commercials all feature professional players at EVO-style tourneys lol

No, it's global destruction. We just don't see much aside from the town and the small resort where they selected the champions.
