I throughly enjoyed the opening and ending squence but that actual episode was incredibly dull.

I always knew, eventually they'd do a mugi episode but the problem is Mugi is such a 1 dimensional character I have no desire to learn anything about her.

Actually thats a lie, I'd love to learn things about her if there was anything too learn. Instead they decided to use the same old gag (mugi knows nothing about the world) that was tolerable in small doses and extend it to an entire episode.

I kind of feel like shes the creators least favourite character because atleast we learnt things about the others in their episodes, Mugi is only allowed to be comic relief, never a person.

Well, all the characters in K-ON are pretty 2 dimensional :S The obnoxious instigator, the shy rational one, the childish one, the naive curious one and the other shy rational one lol.

I always found it interesting how series (not just K-On) that are so character driven lack so much character development.

Don't take my words too seriously... :P

Well, such is the difference between a character driven series, and a character relationships driven series. I think K-ON belongs to the later group, since it is the character dynamics rather than the characters themselves that drive the show.

What drives K-ON!! is the fact that it reliably delivers doses of funny, cute, and "Awww!" at the right times and never tries to go overboard.

It does this even though neither the character dynamics, nor the characters themselves ever meaningfully change. Yui the high school senior is nearly the same idiot as Yui the high school freshman. Her character development takes place off-screen (i.e. her friends and family comment on how much better she's gotten,) without ever being shown on-screen. It's the same with the others. Ritsu is still the same irresponsible slacker. Mio is still the same passive-aggressive moeblob with the deeply repressed inner child. Mugi is still the same drug cake pushing Act of Ojou-sama. Their interactions never change either. The team-dynamic of HTT is still the exact same Ritsu/Mio, Ritsu/Yui, and Mugi/Mugi-Vision dynamic that it was at the start. The only difference is that there's a Yui/Azusa dynamic in HTT's senior year.

What saves K-ON!! is low expectations on the part of its audience. The average K-ON!! fan isn't looking for deep, insightful, storylines and character development. They're looking for a lightweight brains-off dose of cuteness and comic hijinks. You know . . . a moe show. I mean, were I rating this show to the same intellectual standards I apply to Suzumiya Haruhi or Ghost in the Shell, the absolute highest I'd ever rate any K-ON!! episode is a 5, and most of them would be a 2 or 3. K-ON!! on the other hand, is just like its protagonist Yui. Cute . . . but kinda dumb.

Yeh K-ON is not a show to be taken too seriously. And in comparison to majority anime which are only comedy based, this one is actually funny in my opinion...

For example let's take the popular Gintama, I'm at episode 7 and so far I had smiled only maybe twice =/
I don't get the biggest part of humour there, characters are WAY too dumb, somehow even with their sillisness I find K-ON characters more appealing...

as far as I can see.... they are using Mugi's "dont know about world" too much....
its becoming creepy now....
also..., I think they should change their plan about Mugi becoming a greater character... I also do think that mugi is their least favorite character.., which is sad...

Mugi's "dont know about world" was kinda interesting from the start..... but now?? I think they are kinda overdoing it.... its getting creepy..

yeah... If you think about it... its kinda stupid.... which makes me sad because mugi is my favorite character.....
I do really think that they are overdoing it the "dont know about world" thing

I hope they stop doing that and make a backup plan on how they are going to make Mugi a better character.....

this is my favorite Mugi episode

The world of the ultra-wealthy, ultra-power clans of Japan can be pretty utterly isolating. Normally someone like Mugi might never have even been seen outside of an elite private school and would be shuttled by limo and always escorted. Social occasions would be entirely formal and *old* style. Marriages are brokered between clans much as they are for royalty (minor or major). I've seen a bit of this world as far as the USA version in some of my consulting work, it is remarkably disconnected from most people's "daily life".
-- I suspect Mugi is simply as stubborn and crafty as her father.

Doesn't know about stuff? I don't think it's knowing about it that's the issue, why else would her face always light up when they decide to do these things? That alone at least shows she knows what these things are. Mugi just never experienced it, hence experiencing it brings such joy and excitement to her, since it's usually her first time, she just doesn't know the specifics.

One could then argue that the show is more about relationships exploration and exploitation than relationship development.

It's not only with the elite but some common folks can be like that as well. I remember back in grade school I was friends with this oriental kid and every time I went to see him I was never allowed indoors. We also couldn't go beyond the gate that surrounded his front yard. When I was younger I thought it was weird but now that I'm older I understand that his families culture may have had something to do with it.

Being that Mugi is my fav. character but it is just a matter of taste I guess.. I am on the side where I find it cute and comical that she is clueless about normal life.

I love the scene when Mugi surprised Ritsu. She made like a "I did good" expression at the end. I guess she's been practicing that in a while. Ah, Mugi really wants to experience the fun of being a school girl.

This episode was hilarious, mega doses, of Mugi having new experiences. I like Yui's dream, and the "melting" Mugi, as someone stated, taking moeblob to a little too literally, also kind of reminds me of one of Osaka's dreams in Azumanga Daioh, where she pulled off Chiyo's Pig tails. I rather like the new opening and ending songs, and sequences, as is typical the Ending is the much better song in my opinion. Though the new song is still second compared to "Don't Say Lazy".

I guess I never can get tired of Mugi being surprised or excited about every day activities. Definitely one of the most enjoyable episodes so far this season for me.

Cool

I thought there were some funny little moments in this episode and I enjoyed it quite a lot. This is a Cute-Comedy type of show and it ran on all cylinders, delivering everything promised. In its own way, this WAS character development, even if Mugi didn't develop much. We as the audience, got to experience some of Mugi's personality (such as it is) and learned more about her, even if she didn't change through her circumstances. Mostly we got to laugh.

Anyone expecting more from this show are expecting, I think, the wrong things. There are many series about characters who evolve and change over time. This isn't one of those series. Its like, you can't watch Gilligan's Island and expect Gilligan to get any smarter... But you can laugh.

Its light comedy and light music.... like a summertime quiet afternoon of iced barley tea and watching the dragonflies.

Seriously, 4-koma comics and the anime adaptations from them can be intensely popular and yet be very light weight. I enjoy 4-koma for different reasons than I enjoy, say, Planetes or Spice&Wolf or other weightier topics.
