I think the success of the show surprised them.

There's a lot of potential in a tank action game. Should be fun.

Finally!

But oh crap, that means I have to buy a PSV... what a great reason to buy a new system.

It also depends. Is it Platoon based or just another shooter?

Except they build $h!tty cars

That being said... Mitsubishi is responsible for a vast majority of JSDF heavy equipment. So I have to give them credit for that.

They still build $h!tty cars though

They're fairly large in the HVAC department, as well as elevators.

With the tie-ins with both World of Tanks and Mitsubishi I have to think that Girls und Panzer is more widely popular than your average anime, unless this isn't so unusual for an anime show in Japan?

Product tie-ins aren't unusual for popular shows, so no. Girls und Panzer's popular appeal DID blindside many people however, and some are still living in denial that a show about cute girls and tanks having multi-demographic appeal AND being a bestseller it isn't possible.

Girls und Panzer was really popular - it sold right up there with shows like Sword Art Online. Maybe even more importantly, it had appeal outside of the regular anime otaku demographic, and being able to do that makes it an appealing merchandising brand.

For example, regular anime fans aren't going to be very big on Mitsubishi automobiles. But hardware/gadget/military fans are much more likely to be potential customers.

Not unusual. Aside from product tie-ins, they sometimes serve to promote tourism (ex. Rinne no Langrage + Nissan). Oh, and how about AKB48?

In the mid-90s, it was Evangelion. In early 2000, there was Gundam SEED/Destiny, and in 2007 ~ 2010, Macross Frontier. Hell, Sheryl Nome had tie-ins with Mitsubishi (Lancer) and even her own jewelry line.

On an unrelated but related note. A recent episode of National Geographic's Megafactories focused on Wargaming.net. You'll find it somewhere if you search for it.

And most of the time they end up with different owners, and even if they share the namesake they don't have any relationship whatsoever. Other examples include Saab and Rolls-Royce.

The latest Inside the Chieftain's Hatch explicitly mentions that you can't make a Hetzer by dropping a superstructure onto a Pz38t chassis. (Because of GuP.)

Going by that logic, the more appropriate car company to collaborate with GuP would be Daimler (which also now owns Henschel, builder of the Pz III and both Tigers) and maybe, maybe Porsche.

Well, technically ThyssenKrupp (Krupp, Pz IV) would be even more appropriate, but they're not a car company.

I'd figure that Daimler, though, would go to great lengths to avoid their WWII history being brought up in any context. But who knows? Maybe a German car company wouldn't mind a fresh angle into the Japanese market that this anime may provide.

Miho confirmed for April 2014. No further news on the other members or the tank, sadly...though I think the commander's seat and turret hatch is nice.
