One Piece - Chapter 701 [manga] (No One Piece This Week - 3/11/13)
Welcome to the weekly manga discussion thread for One Piece.
Thread Guidelines
And so, the Dressrosa arc begins! Credit goes to the folks at AP forums for the summary and translation: -Chapter title is "Adventure in nation of Love, Passion, and Toys". The ministory involves Caribou sneaking inside a building that turns out to be a weapons factory. -The crew docks on Dressrosa. After they arrive, Luffy messes around with Momo, who seems to have another vague memory of Dofla. He then continues his argument with Luffy, saying that he'll become a shogun of Wano. After the squabble, Kinemon says he'll provide everyone with disguises (and suggests that the women should be naked, heh ). Law then gives Nami a vivre card that points towards Zou, just in case something happens to them. -Law shows the Straw-Hats a map of the island that one of his crewmen drew. It's decided that the team taking Caesar to Green Bit will be Law, Usopp, and Robin. Nami, Momo, Brooke, and Chopper will stay to guard the Sunny, while the monster trio, Franky, and Kinemon will destroy the factories and locate the missing samurai. It turns out that Dressrosa is modeled after Spain, and is not only famous for its flowers, food, and dancing women..... but is also famous for its LIVING TOYS! Various toys are running around the place, and one of them happens to recognize the faces of Luffy and co. thanks to the recent news article..... -Luffy's gang hear someone getting stabbed, and one of the toys tells them that it's a regular occurrence for the island's women to stab the men who cheated on them (lol). Later, they arrive at the port town of Acacia, fully disguised with suits and beards. They dine at a restaurant, whose waiter tells them that fairies supposedly exist on the island. The restaurant also has a casino, where a gang of thugs are cheating a blind man who's playing roulette. It turns out that they're taking advantage of the fact that Buffalo is currently MIA. However, Luffy calls out the punks on their stunt, and they're ready to attack him. However, the blind man, after giving his thanks to Luffy, unsheathes a sword from his cane, and.... seems to create a black hole on the floor with it! As the thugs are pulled into the hole, the mystery man says that being unable to see the world's filth could be considered an advantage of being blind..... WELP. All the strongest guys are assembled in group (I'm sure the bunch of you are fangasming over that this very second), it's possible that Wapol's toy business underwent an evolution, and right off the bat we're introduced to a new mystery man..... who apparently ISN'T Kanjurou (Aohige notes that Kinemon showed no sign of recognizing him). A pic of the blind man in question: Spoiler:
If I didn't know any better myself, I'd say that we were just introduced to our tiger admiral. Last edited by james0246; 2013-03-12 at 17:14. |

I'm actually more interested in Caribou, he might very well got to the place Luffy and co are looking for.
So I guess, Caribou for crew member debate will begin again... BTW, that blind Samurai would continue the trend of Oda using old actors from samurai films. Meet the Zato no Ichi, the blind samurai from Zatochi 座頭市, a film series with 26 films so far (1962-1989, not counting recent remakes), played by Katsu Shintaro:

^Yeah, I saw a few folks at AP make the comparison already. But yeah, it would make sense for this guy to be Fujitora since that would continue Oda's trend of using famous actors with samurai/yakuza roles as inspiration for the admirals. BTW, I find it interesting that he has what's apparently a gravity-based ability. So I guess this means the the blind man has a more "complete" gravity power compared to Blackbeard, then? After all, the darkness fruit was never specifically classified as a gravity power alone.....
And so, that's my two cents on the new guy. Now before the rest of the battle junkies come stampeding to this thread to fap off to the monster trio orgy or whatever (Pandora's Box: The Revenge!? ), I'll just mention that my main interest here isn't Admiral (maybe) Zatoichi, but the living toys. As I indicated in my previous post, I think this may be a result of advances in the technology used in Wapol's toys. I mean, if it's possible to make little robot servants out of Wapometal, then it's no wonder the fat one was able to become a king again! Heck, I'm even wondering if one of the arc bosses will be one of the "stronger" toys..... I also found the fairy comment interesting, as well. So I guess that means that either fairies/pixies exist in the OP world, or it was a reference to the Klabautermann (which I suppose is already proof of a fairylike being in the first place)..... |

Dressrosa is a nice island. ^^ I like the Spanish motif a lot. 2014 should be a good year for the One Piece anime since the Dressrosa arc will be the focal point of that year (unless it turns out to be a short story arc, anyway).

if he really was the rumoured admiral
I wonder, where did he come from in the first place? since we didn't see him as VA or in any other ranks during war at marineford. and it's kinda hard to believe for an old man that strong just goes unnoticed in Marine's body dispatch/help from World Goverment perhaps?

Wapo could have partnered up with Doflamingo seeing how he has ties with the world government. Thus allowing him to grow his company and then giving him his own country again in exchange for making toys/weapons for him foreverr. That way he has a strong supple of weapons always being made. If one of the bosses is going to be a toy then I would hope it would be another android who would then battle Franky. Just image the fight of too mechaa would that not be sooooooo coool . I soo helll think it would be. For all we know Wapo and Doflamingo could have also gotten their hands on Vanpunkes research and have also made their own androids based on it. Well Mermaids and Giants exist so the thought of fairies and pixies could well also exist. Could lead to the next arc :P I wonder how they would look like and Sanji would probably get a nose bleed from it. Brook would finally be able to see someones panties. |

zatoichi!!!! damn, that was cool! i agree, he is most likely fujitora. i immediately thought that when i saw his realistic character design, it's very similar to the admirals.
kinemon sure has an "active" imagination... lol

Very fun chapter. I love these kind of chapters where we discover another facet of the One piece world.
I can only agree the blind swordsman is Fujitora. Zatoichi as an admiral... that's pretty cool. Dressrosa is an eccentric yet inviting country. It's completely unlike what I thought a country under Doflamingo's rule would be. It would actually be nice to live there. It sounds like he was actually a pretty good king. I was thinking the same. Aren't they going to confront Doflamingo? You never know what he might do. At least one member of the monster trio should have gone with them. The dynamic of that group should be interesting. I can see Robin and Law getting along.

Well, the Green Bit crew was "supposed" to just drop him off and come right back.
Ussop and Robin are interesting pair both excels in range attack and are effective in slowing/distracting enemies. Provided that they do meet Dofla, which I doubt, Law 'should' be able to hold his own with Robin and Ussop assist from far. If it's other people, like a member of the poker gang with lessor level crew, then the three should be enough to hold there own considering that Franky was able to take out both Baby 5 and Buffalo and they seem to be part of Dofla's main crew. That being said, isn't Wapol located in the Evil Black Drum Kingdom? And can't he only put life into his toys by eating something already alive and then combining it with other materials? Something as stupid as a dog wouldn't care about being a toy, but I doubt a human would be so easily acceptable of the change... The fairies comment was also very interesting. Klabautermann is still the most/only supernatural creature in the series (unless he is just another form of Haki, only one that a nonliving entity can produce or residual Haki from others living in a specific location they have strong emotional investment in), so I'm interested in seeing if other potentially supernatural forces are out there.
