It seemed like a harem anime to me but ANN, AniDB, MyAnimeList don't label it as romance anywhere.

I have to ask: are you referring to the anime or the novel?

Because if we go by the general definition of romance, there's none of that here, there's no dating, no... "I love you, you love me" blushy mushy scenes, just not the kind of romance if you to compare this series to say, Mayo Chiki

Sure UmeUme and the novelist might count, but that's somewhat of a kidnapping, assault, stalking relationship

But I definitely would not recommend this series as a romance series, I know I'd be flogged if I did

Yea I'd agree with Mangatron here, the romance in the anime is well it's not really there, very very very subtle is what it is.
At most you got Sato fascinated with Sen and Ayame wanting attention from Sato but hardly counts as romance tbh.

Can only hope a 2nd season happens and we get actual romance then

But this show takes that romance to a height never before animated, that has to count for something.

This show is how Iron Chef really should have been. Mystery ingredients? Child's play. Last cook standing, no holds bared battle royal WHILE cooking. Now that would truly be an Iron Chef.
