The Tamayura OVA's been subbed, for anyone out there who needs more Tamayura. I'm starting to think that doctors should start handing out Tamayura boxsets in lieu of antidepressants, because man this show is relaxing. (Tamayura's also probably one of the anime I associate most strongly with the 2010s in general, given that it started in 2010 and has had new episodes put out throughout every year of the decade so far. The only other anime I know of to fit those exact criteria is Ika Musume.)
The OVA fits the typical Tamayura formula, so there shouldn't be much in the way of surprises here. Just the usual 25 minute dose of soothing music, in sync with a universe where apparently everyone in the world is unfailingly kindhearted, goodnatured, sentimental, and easygoing. There's not much Kanae featured here, for those that want more of the new girl - this one's mostly about Maon and Norie - but she's still there to stand around and look pretty, so good enough for me. The highlight of the episode was probably Norie getting so emotional early on over Maon being left behind during the field trip - both because that sort of protectiveness is touching, and because I can't recall many times at all that Norie's genki girl personality has completely collapsed, which was pretty striking since she's a character that I've been acquainted with for close to four years now. So yeah, go watch and be healed. |

I just watched the ova and no, I am not crying. Something just went into my eyes that's all!
Jokes aside it's great to watch these girls again no matter how short the episode is. The backgrounds are still beautiful, the music still wonderfully soothing and Kanae is still cute as a button so everything's right in the world. I was always rather critical of Tamayura because I felt like a certain sense of discovery was missing from the first two seasons but the addition of the new girl and the increased focus on finding new scenarios to photograph sorted that out for me and made the show one of my most cherished of the last few years. Luckily there's still a bit of discovery to be had in this extra episode even if it isn't the focus but, to be fair, the episode is better for it. It's been far too long since we last had some Tamayura to enjoy, just focusing on the girls is more than good enough. Now just announce a final season already!

Yes indeed... Tamayura is without a doubt one of my absolute favorite series ever made - it just clicks with me on soooo many levels - so any new material is more than welcome.
Specifically, in terms of the ep fitting into the second season I was very happy to see an ep with a bit more focus on Norie, who I felt kinda had to take a smaller role % wise throughout "More Aggresive". The ep helps to round things out a little more for me. The insert song was quite nice, but I found myself crying again on re-visiting the ED again after some time. I eagerly hope another season is in the making, and that it will be the subject of the announcement on August 3rd. Though come to think of it I would not mind a movie being made, either....

Come to think of it, a movie might just be a nice way to round off the series, but that wait would be killer.
Update: I greatly anticipate their August 3 announcement

That was such a heartwarming OVA. Maon is so cute
The bad part is that it made me realize how much I miss Tamayura. I can find substitutes more or less every season, but they're just not the same.
