And here we are, the final episode of Progressive.
It was a fun ride to be quite honest, I enjoyed every single episode, especially episodes 4 and 5. It was nice to see the emotional side of Raharu once again thanks to Atomsk, the mystery around them is still there but we know Raharu loves him. Jinryu is back, which means that Raharu is probably going to try to get Atomsk back in some way but I guess that's for Alternative. Hidomi is a different type of main character, same goes for Ide, it was nice to see both finally together. The only criticism I can give is how the ending feels underwhelming, it doesn't have the same impact of the first season but I guess this is a generational problem. The original FLCL was a series where the characters were trying to find themselves, to find a place in a world where nothing is given to you in any way, somehow fitting in the years where the generation was changing quite a bit. Progressive is about moving on and acquire a future, the characters finally reached a point where they can find a meaning in their life. The message of the original series was stronger thanks to Mamimi, Naota, Raharu and of course a better writing surrounded by all the crazy stuff that's always present in FLCL. In the end, Progressive is for me a 7/10, not a bad sequel but it doesn't come close to the original one. Now let's see what Alternative brings to the table. |

Progressive was in the first two eps off to an interesting start. I wish it stayed interesting.
The original FLCL was something else and really chimed with the times. Maybe this is similar in that regard but to its own detriment, although that's just a small part and inexcusable as the only reason I ended up not liking it. The writing just wasn't there, there was too much flash and not enough narrative, even with the...possible ways you could translate the flash as metaphorical (since FLCL is basically about puberty/growing up). I wish there was more plot, what appeared to be an interesting side plot with the call-girl ended up just being another flashy thing at the end and ended with (the characters) laughing. Maybe I would give the original FLCL an 8/10. Progressive gets a 5/10.

The Japanese are getting the two series in movie form in September.
Also, Toonami was asked to delay the airing of the sub versions until November. |

Episode 2 of Alternative was interesting, this one focuses on Hijiri and the supposed college boyfriend. At first, it seems like they were mature and could hit it off, but they ended up breaking up because the guy was interested in Haruko overtime, she realized her flaws and decided to just stop pretend to be mature and just be mature, after another mechanical battle to which Haruko and female MC had a bit of a team-up in a way that was hilarious and fun.
