That was a really good episode, I must say one of the best of the series. Finally some of Gilbert's past with Violet, his struggle to handle her since she's obviously someone who didn't knew anything about the outside world. I'm still refusing to believe Gilbert is dead, no body, no confirmation, that's a rule.

There are a couple of scenes that were the best, one of them was when Gilbert gave Violet the green stone she always carry with her, another one is when Gilbert finally saw Violet in action killing people like it was nothing, we can see how he suffer a lot from that. Another relevant part was the end of the episode with Gilbert getting shot in the eye, berserk Violet incoming. It was nice to see how Violet little by little changed and how Gilbert's efforts were not in vain.

Now there are a couple of problems with the episode:
Spoiler for LN content deleted:

Overall was an intense episode and also a really good one, and what's the best, is a 2 part arc which means episode 9 will be packed with more action. Kyoani delivered this time.

----

On a side note, we reached the last parts of Volume 1 of the LN, this makes me think that the last episodes of the adaptation will include part of Volume 2. If this ends on being confirmed then those 5 original episodes were a complete waste of time and resources because this puts a lot of pressure with a low number of episodes. On the bright side this push Kyoani to use only LN material with little original content (for example gilbert's grave was original).

There is another piece of information regarding the BD's, it was confirmed that the version we're watching right now has deleted content that will be included on the BDs, sadly one of those scenes is the unnecessary fanservice.

Spoiler for --:

Damn, did Violet get a dose of some super soldier serum? Still trying to get over the mental hurdle of a kid being such a killing machine; she's literally dancing around the bullets coming at her. holy shit.

man, why'd they end it there. story telling wise, this doesn't make much sense either. this should have been near the climax of the show. it's pretty hard to go from this ep to other stand alone chapters. i can see them neglecting the ending here and not continuing it next ep. instead, jumping into another novel chapter then revisiting this a little later. the narrative is already disjointed as is.

also, this ep did a good job showing why she wasn't socialized much, even as a young adult.

Maybe they're planning on pushing the real "ending" for the adaptation in Ep14 which is the OVA, unless that is random additional material.

I really can't react about this episode until the continuation is over. It would be unfair otherwise, since we all know that Gilbert will survive this headshot and will only be KIA on another battle years later.

I believe these are the moments leading up to the flashback of episode 1 where you see Violet with both her arms gone and trying to clench Gilb with her teeth

I STILL REALLY THINK HE'S DEAD THO

Ep. 8:

Violet set out to find her answers and is letting nothing stop her. Did you notice how she walked through a river to get to the Major's old mansion? Seeing Gilbert's headstone was a massive shock to her, I thought.

Glad we finally got to see more of the time she had with Gilbert. I thought that, for as little actual screen time as was used, a great deal of information was transmitted to the viewer, and done well.

I really liked how they presented the sound effects for the cannon and gunfire.

I think next episode Violet will hold fast to the fact that they never found Gilbert's body. He may be dead, or may not be. If he is not I wonder if she will find him crippled and hiding himself from the world, unable to rejoin civilian life after four years of war. Or maybe he will have amnesia and not remember who he is. Or be both crippled and amnesiac when Violet finds him in some crappy run down charity shelter. Now that would be a good ending without copping out.

I don't think that it would be too farfetched for Gilbert to survive as you have Violet who was a bleeding bilat arm amputee without a tourniquet for those 2 wounds surviving.

Violet is clearly not a normal human though.

Gilbert is not so bright as a military commander. He runs into an ambush at the cathedral without even considering that a trap was set and out in the open. Then, he stands in the middle of a war-zone out in the open. No wonder he got shot and all his men, minus Violet, died.

I suspect that, assuming he didn't actually during the final battle, he's AWOL for a reason. I'd think he believes that by continuing to be by Violet's side she's never really be able to disconnect herself from the life of a soldier who knew only battle, and therefore was useless outside of it, never to find a life beyond the battlefield.

In a way Violet would have epitomized that mentality that Big Boss in Metal Gear had always had, that a soldier has no life outside the battlefield and would eventually be discarded. Gilbert most likely believed that eliminating himself from the scene was likely the only way for Violet to find normalcy as a regular human being.

We must also of course factor in the tremendous amount of guilt he harbors for allowing Violet to continue that way of life. Part of his decision to whatever fate he ultimately had obviously greatly stems from it as well.

From where the story stands, I'd guess Gilbert was very, very, very wrong.

The long awaited flashback is finally here. Gilbert tried to help Violet as much as he could, but even he couldn't go against the orders of the higher ups and Violet's own wish to protect him. He did try to leave her behind during that first mission, but she followed him anway. In the end, he ended up using her as a weapon, while attempting to teach her to be human.

I agree with MeoTwister that Gilbert disappeared because he realized Violet would always remain a soldier and wouldn't grown further as a human as long as he stayed by her side. And I believe he was actually right.

Yep, they said this would be the battle that would decide the outcome of the war, so the flashback from the first episode should take place not long after. How long did Violet stay in the hospital? Because she actually looks her age in the flashback, unlike in the present (yet the people she meets are always able to tell she's a child despite her looks).

Gilbert is totally alive though

So much hype and excitement thanks to the previous episode but all ended in like 3 minutes by going back to the scene on episode 1 where Violet lost her arms. Honestly that was anticlimatic and not a good treatment for such important part of the story. The rest of the episode was just more drama and Violet suffering with lots of anime original parts until she finally "moved on".

This episode went back to the cheesy stuff from the first 5 ones by making everything fast enough to lose interest and not even allowing the viewer to connect with the characters and the different scenes, like Violet trying to kill herself and then suddenly jumping to her moving on and assuming that Gilbert is dead. On the bright side the last part of the episode was truly emotional by showing the letters and the flashbacks with the life of some of the previous characters that changed alongside Violet, the music was on point there.

14 in total, but the 14th episode is most likely to be an OVA.

That's not confirmed though. But even if it's true, we still have 4 episodes to go, not 3.

True. But it's just that the format usually trends that way.
