What I think is that later on the story, Rentaro somehow finds a cure for the Cursed Children, getting rid of the Gastrea virus that lingers inside them, turning them into normal girls.

I mean no matter how much I think about it, young girls dying early because of such virus is just too sad

If that's what will happen, who do you think will end up with Rentaro in the end? It looks like the author is setting up Seitenshi as another love rival. It's either Enju or Kisara. Currently, Kisara has the best chance but childhood friends almost never win. So it's possible Enju might win if she doesn't die in the end.

Rentaro and Kisara are in couple in the volume 7. Moreover he has never seen Enju as a possible love interest.

This LN has no light at the end of the tunnel by the looks of it so far.
Maybe a little bit with Kisara and Rentaro, but I think that's just because one of them will die in the upcoming novels..

After volume 6, it's been officially established that Rentaro and Kisara as an official couple. Rentaro never sees Enju as a love interest, but rather sees her as a little sister.

What's even sadder is that Enju's erosion rate is really high (around 42%) and she's coming close of becoming a Gastrea (percentage till complete collapse is around 7.2%). Even sadder is that she has no idea that she's slowly dying or turning into a Gastrea despite knowing the erosion rate concept.

They cut off a good part of the battle with Kagetane but the Varanium limbs looked awesome!. My only complaint is that Rentaro should have shot the old bastard right between the eyes; right I get it, you lost your wife and your country to the gastrea so you take it out with little girls like the wothless bastard you are but destroying Tokyo Area just to prove your point? That´beyond insane! I think I have way more sympathy for Kagetane, the guy just got the worst of humanity thrown at him.

So what are the Gastrea? From what I saw in ep 4 of the anime I'm going to guess

12 children were experimented upon and they became the Level V Gastrea. From them the virus spread to other people creating the other levels. It's basically like Claymore all over again.

The so-called catalyst in the case that turned out to be a tricycle could be a "trigger" to provoke level 5 Gastrea mutation. And it might have something to do with the cursed children whose erosion rate become >50%.

But in 10 years ago, we have no idea how it came from.

PS: by the way, did I just noticed of Seitenshi becoming a love rival in here? O.o

He is alive after vol 4, ha and kohina is 2 of the 15 people who survived after the battle against Aldebaran's army. Afterwords they escaped again and might show up later, in vol4 he acted as a mentor to Rentaro and brought out the cold steel determination within him.

Well yeah, war is kinda a inevitable here. Even if Rentaro and Enju does manage to kill that level 5 Gastrea, they're still going to war anyways. And yeah, it ain't pretty and I'm expecting this to escalate into a third world war.

It seems that the author is showing his political views a little more, leaning more left-wing (the antagonists in volumes 5 and 6 happen to be part of a secret ultra-right wing organization that wants to reunite Japan under an totalitarian fist and used modified Gastrea to take over the world), and the fact that the author portray discrimination against cursed children to be very wrong. Thus being said, it appears the novel is leaning more and more "the end justifies the means."

So is this going to be Resident Evil-esque?

Well, anyone here watch Kamen Rider Gaim? Urobuchi is the writer of it, and I could see a lot similarity between the two MC. The most important trait is that they are both young men rebel against the old ones' rule (for good reason).
