The use of the tentacles here would be along the lines of the Scarlet Dragon from A's--you know, the giant sand worm Signum fought in both the manga and the anime? I'm mostly unsure as to go about writing such creatures and attack methods in a story.

Actually, wrapping attacks could actually be more effective against a retreating target than one standing their ground. Standing one's ground would mean they are likely paying more attention to the movements of the tentacles since they are not trying to map out a best route of escape or taking note of more mobility obstacles. It's generally not a good idea trying to catch a moving target, especially a retreating one since you'll more likely to miss and just waste energy. Submission techniques would be a good example; you would always, ALWAYS like to catch your opponent when he's stuck in a certain position (Like bad footing), take that chance and lunge for him. If he's moving backwards you're more likely to get a foot or punch in the face.

Combat tentacles' fighting style differs in monster species and well the amount of tentacles the monster have. The only thing that comes up in my mind is the whipping and lashing motion of the said tentacles, and crushing hugs.

Use him as a guide on how your monster's tentacles should act or move for a specific action.

It depends on the number of the tentacles. The more they are, the less precise control you'll have on each tentacle since operating all of them would be a time-consuming.

If their number is absurdly many, then the best way is simply to swarm the prey with fast attacks from several angles.

If they're few, let say eight, then the basic is the same - box the target with four tentacles from multiple sides - but what the remaining four will do will depend on the target's reaction. I can think of having one tentacle act as bait, and as the target intercepted it the rest would grab his/her arms and legs before slowly squishing them.

It also depends on the nature of the tentacles. Are they strong? Can their edges be sharpened and used for stabbing attacks? Are they poisonous? Because IIRC Hydras (not the mythological creature) possess poisoned ones, making prey-capturing easier.

Yes, unless you're aiming to capture and not kill. Otherwise just break the enemy's neck, much much faster.

There's also the question of the width of the base to which the tentacles are attached, or if they are even attached to the same exact base.

Consider the octopus, which has tentacles sprouting from only one side, and each of them rooted directly next to each other.

Having tentacles spread further apart allows them to attack from a wider different angle than if they were all clumped together. It also allows two grasping tentacles to pull the same target taut (or apart) with greater leverage.

Of course, the further apart the tentacles are, the fewer of them can contribute to a single target.

"...Why me though?" Sein pointed at Due. "Wouldn't it be easier for her to sneak into the Bureau services than me? She's done it before!"

"I've got other things to do right now." Due said as she looked at Jail, wondering why he wanted Sein to do that instead of her.

"Besides, while I have no doubt about Due's ability to trick people into believing her to be in two places at the same time, I don't want to push my luck with that." Jail smiled softly. "You won't have to be there long." He then grinned at Sein. "Besides, learning counter-strategies to magic and how the Bureau sends out their forces isn't a bad idea, is it?"

"You sure you want Sein to do it?" Nove asked from her position against the wall. "Knowing her, she'll spend all her time fooling around and trying to steal someone's chocolate cake."

"Hey!" Sein pouted at Nove. "That was only one slice and I thought you got yours already."

Nove narrowed her eyes and shook a fist at Sein. "Just because Due-nee can make a delicious chocolate cake doesn't mean you have to steal my slice!"

As Sein teared up, Jail chuckled and looked at Nove. "Actually, there is a reason I'm not sending you to do what she's doing, but those reasons are my own." As much as he did care for his Numbers, he didn't want someone doing a blood test and finding out just who he cloned Nove from. Sure, as soon as things settled down and the High Council would no longer be a problem, he'd let her meet her biological family.

For right now though, he didn't want the distraction in her life. "Anyway, Nove," Jail continued to speak, "I'll need you and Wendi to do various reconnaissance for me." Nove blinked at him stupidly. "I'll need you to blend in with people as best as you can."

"Um, doctor, how are we supposed to do that in these body suits? It worked fine on that one world because we wore cloaks over our outfits, but I don't think that'll work in cities and stuff."

"For one, you can pass Wendi off as a familiar." Uno said as she walked into the room with a bunch of fabric in her hands. "And two... Strip naked, I've got some work to do, making you new outfits."

"N...N...Naked?!" Nove's face went bright red and Uno rolled her eyes.

"Nove, for crying out loud, we've all seen you naked before. The doctor can probably tell you your exact breast size, how large your nipples are, about that mark on your..."

"I'll leave." Jail smiled at her as he stood up and walked past her, patting her on the head while he walked past. "Due, Sein, let's leave the two of them alone."

"Aww..." Sein pouted and followed Due and Jail out of the room. After the doors closed behind her, Sein looked at Due. "Where's Agito?"

"With Lutecia today." That was another reason why Due wouldn't be able to do what Sein was going to be doing soon. A unison device would draw unneeded attention towards her. "Plus I'm too old to do your mission."

Sein frowned at Due. "You can make yourself look younger."

Rolling her eyes, Due shook her head. "Even if I can, there's also the problem with me acting like a teenager," she narrowed her eyes at Sein, "or would you have me be hyperactive again?"

Sweat-dropping, Sein nodded. "Alright... So, what are the rest of my sisters going to do?"

"I'm going to be helping Lutecia out and look for some stuff." Due commented. "I don't know about the rest of our sisters..."

"There are hundreds, if not thousands of Relics out there." Jail commented, drawing their attention. "They're classified as Lost Logia, but the truth of the matter is, they're powerful magic amplifiers." Jail had an unusual grin on his face. "They were meant to be used to be bonded with humans to magnify their power to unimaginable heights." Due and Sein looked at him in interest. It wasn't too often Jail talked about stuff like this. "The man I was cloned from never got to see the final result, since Unison had just been made near the end of his life. The Relics, as they're called now," a screen popped up, revealing a red gem that slowly spun around, "was an effort to give everyone a power boost similar to that of a Unison device."

Due raised an eyebrow as she looked at it. It looked like a red rectangular cube with a trapezoid on the top and the bottom. "Do all of these Relics look the same?"

Jail nodded. "Yes. However, they're all numbered, the lower the number, the more powerful the effect."

"So, I'm to assume that anything over fifty is pretty weak?" Due raised an eyebrow when Jail laughed and shook his head. "...What?"

Jail grinned, his eyes glinting in the light. "After level fifty, the powers become interesting." He pointed at Sein, who blinked several times. "My research indicates that there's one that, if fused to the body, would let anyone have the power of Sein's Deep Diver."

"I'm not special then?" Sein frowned at the thought of a bunch of people being able to do what she could do easily.

"It's not that simple." Jail shook his head. "The Relics can only be used by those who use Belkan or similar physical styles of magic."

Thinking about the possibilities, Due nodded slowly. "Interesting... You have a plan, don't you?"

"Don't I always?" Jail grinned at Due. "As for Lutecia, finding the right relic should be able to heal the damage to her mother's body."

"You really intend to let her go with her mother if she can be fixed?" Sein blinked when Jail nodded. "Doctor?"

"Such an event was something that should never have happened." Jail said, the glee on his face was replaced by a more somber tone and look. "Whenever Mazoku appear, tragedy soon follows for people, both large and small for everyone they come into contact with."

The two blinked and nodded slowly.

"Are you done yet?" Nove asked as she stood on top of a chair completely naked. "This is, oww!"

"The more you complain, the longer it takes. And pinching your butt to get you to shut up hurts my fingers, so just quiet down." Uno said as she continued to take notes down while wrapping her measuring tape around Nove's thighs. "Hmm..."

"Come on, Un-nee, you know my body sizes."

Uno rolled her eyes and called up a view screen for Nove to look at. "For a skin-tight, protective body suit, yes, but look, normal people wear things like jeans, shorts, shirts that don't squeeze against their bodies like our body suits do."

"Oh. So, um, do you know what the doctor wants me to do?"

"You and Wendi," Uno said as she wrote down more notes down, "are going to do some investigation on various worlds for us."

"For what?" Nove blinked as Uno sighed heavily.

"Whatever we need, but if you need specifics, Nove, think of it as scouting for new materials for the doctor to use in his experiments." Nove nodded, she could get behind that.

"Oww!" Nove nearly jumped as Uno pinched her butt again. "Would you stop that?!"

"Of course." Uno smiled as she packed her stuff up. "I'll have to do some work with Wendi, but, yes, we're done for now."

Nove sighed and got down and grabbed her clothes. "And Nove..." Nove blinked and turned to look at Uno. "Don't forget if someone asks about Wendi's ears, eyes or tail that she's your familiar, and if they wonder why you aren't in the Bureau, just say you're from a non-administered world."

The naked redhead nodded as she hurried up to get dressed and get away from Uno and her pinching fingers.

Who knew a secretary had such strong fingers?

You'll get strong fingers if you keep on typing like that. I like this idea about relics, It's like those superheroes who have weird powers, we could get several sets of fantastic four or likewise out of the numbers.

"Don't I always?" Jail grinned at Due. "As for Lutecia, finding the right relic should be able to heal the damage to her mother's body."

"You really intend to let her go with her mother if she can be fixed?" Sein blinked when Jail nodded. "Doctor?"

"Such an event was something that should never have happened." Jail said, the glee on his face was replaced by a more somber tone and look. "Whenever Mazoku appear, tragedy soon follows for people, both large and small for everyone they come into contact with."

The two blinked and nodded slowly.

"Are you done yet?" Nove asked as she stood on top of a chair completely naked. "This is, oww!"

"The more you complain, the longer it takes. And pinching your butt to get you to shut up hurts my fingers, so just quiet down." Uno said as she continued to take notes down while wrapping her measuring tape around Nove's thighs. "Hmm..."

"Come on, Un-nee, you know my body sizes."

Uno rolled her eyes and called up a view screen for Nove to look at. "For a skin-tight, protective body suit, yes, but look, normal people wear things like jeans, shorts, shirts that don't squeeze against their bodies like our body suits do."

"Oh. So, um, do you know what the doctor wants me to do?"

"You and Wendi," Uno said as she wrote down more notes down, "are going to do some investigation on various worlds for us."

"For what?" Nove blinked as Uno sighed heavily.

"Whatever we need, but if you need specifics, Nove, think of it as scouting for new materials for the doctor to use in his experiments." Nove nodded, she could get behind that.

"Oww!" Nove nearly jumped as Uno pinched her butt again. "Would you stop that?!"

"Of course." Uno smiled as she packed her stuff up. "I'll have to do some work with Wendi, but, yes, we're done for now."

Nove sighed and got down and grabbed her clothes. "And Nove..." Nove blinked and turned to look at Uno. "Don't forget if someone asks about Wendi's ears, eyes or tail that she's your familiar, and if they wonder why you aren't in the Bureau, just say you're from a non-administered world."

The naked redhead nodded as she hurried up to get dressed and get away from Uno and her pinching fingers.

Who knew a secretary had such strong fingers?

Her stomach still heaved.

But she'd managed to keep down some juice.

And between them - and her own insistence that it was just a bit of bad memory - Suzuka and Arisa had managed to *not* let Fate-chan know it was her scars that had Akiko throwing up so badly. It just...shouldn't be done, to tell a girl that.

Even if Akiko thought Fate would understand.

And she was grateful - she was - to the two girls but the closeness, the *caring* was like salt in a wound and she barely managed to not scream at them, swallowing a demand of 'where where you -before-?!' by the time she got through with the bath that she had to retreat from them, pulling back to the quiet in the kitchen, which had nothing but conversation about the preparation of food.

Because...she knew where they were.

Hiding with each other - just like her.

In some ways it was almost as bad, but there wouldn't be anywhere in the house she could really *go* without tossing someone else out of a room - and after almost tripping over the girl with the razor-tail and the giant iron hands - massive, huge things of the same black iron Dead Master's claws were made of - Akiko didn't really want to *try*.

But that left her in the kitchen being comforted by Lindy and Momoko and Miss Amy and Shamal and..

It was like having at least four moms around. Except..she'd gotten used to not having /one/. And it hurt that it wasn't that one, too.

Akiko turned to look at yet another well meaning adult - it was nice that they all *cared* but -somehow it got wearing - and the woman held out a hand, palm up and shirt sleeve pulled back.

The pale skin showed off the scars - slashed across the arm with something sharp, several times, long ago - and it was a moment before Akiko realized what she was seeing, and her best brave words died on her lips, unsaid as she met the woman's eyes.

'You're safe now' or 'you were so brave' or 'I understand' - those were words this woman, for one, didn't say.

Those words helped, and From /her/ Akiko thought she might actually believe them, with that evidence written across her flesh - but they weren't the words Sailor Nothing actually said.

"It still hurts sometimes. But it's worth it, staying alive."

'how would you know?!' died on the way to her lips. This woman - knew. Akiko didn't know how, but...Shoutan Himei's eyes were for a moment the same ones, color aside, that Akiko saw in the mirror lately - staring at something far, far away, and horrible to see.

She reached a hand up and lay it on Himei's wrist hesitantly, eyes drawn back to the scars there and asked hesitantly, "How long...will I still feel this way? Like..everything's a dream? Like I'll wake up and be back -" Where, precisely she'd be back to she couldn't say, except - "Alone."

Another woman might have pulled her close and hugged her tightly and not had an answer.

Himei's hand on her shoulder was gentle and firm and -there-. "Time." She said softly. "Days. Weeks. Minutes. For me - the first time was when the enemy was gone."

"First time..?" Akiko swallowed with difficulty, squared her shoulders and asked - all but begged, really, for a 'no', but asked, "It comes -back-?"

"muum." Himei agreed - if it was to the need to say it wasn't so or the fact of it happening or both, maybe neither of them were sure, but she agreed.

"I have a little girl. She's senshi now, but until last year, nothing bad ever happened to her if It could be stopped." Himei told her gently. "She still woke up scared to be alone in her bed sometimes. Everyone feels alone. That's why we need people. That's why we have friends. You'll remember. And someone will be there."

"Will they?" Akiko asked faintly, barely able to talk - her throat was tight and she was very aware her eyes were full of *still more damn tears* -

"Nothing wouldn't keep them from your side. Everything else couldn't." The older woman told her, and Akiko hiccuped something between desperate relief and baffled irritation at the pun.

"Does it..get easier?" Akiko managed after sending the woman a brief glare that translated into mortification at being angry with these people who were all helping her so much.

"It gets -better-." Shoutan Himei told her. "We don't do the easy way again."

Himei swallowed herself, startled at her own quiet vehemence, and then hesitantly offered a hand to shake. "Okay?"

Akiko looked at it for a long moment, as what was being asked of her sank in - and faced it firmly. "Okay. Never again."

She took that hand, and made it a promise.
