Oh, that's new. I bought Kara no Kyoukai when I was in Japan several years ago because I was a fan of Type-Moon's Tsukihime. I read an extra chapter of the book each year to gauge how much Japanese I've learned, which isn't entirely a good way to measure it, considering some sections are WAYYY harder than others, but it's pretty fun.

On that note, I've got a couple of light novels: ToraDora, Spice & Wolf, To Aru Majutsu no Index, Bokusatsu Tenshi Dokuro-chan. Plus some stuff from Hoshi Shin'ichi.

I have the translated copy of Hiroki Azuma's 2001 book (Japan's Database Animals, a topic which is covered in an article that had its own thread on AS) and some of Murakami's works.

I think books are a really effective way to learn more about how authors from a culture see things differently or word things in a specific way. It's really surprising how view points and expressive ability differ so widely between people.

I've read a little of the FMP! Encyclopedia but there are still a lot of gaps in my understanding of Japanese.

I read the occasional J-novel. Right now I'm reading an account of someone's mother's struggle with senile dementia "Okaasan wa Uchuujin." Depressing doesn't even begin to describe it.

Do you have any news on this? Dates and how many volumes?

I wish I could find more translated Rampo Edogawa (Japanese master of mystery, Conan Edogawa is named after him).
