You need either a legal copy of the game or the free demo of episode 1, available on the official site.
Just read the "readme" file in the patch folder, they are informative enough I believe.

1. The free demo, is it the whole first episode?

1- Yes it is.
2- It's kinda hard to miss, it's one of the 9 files that are in the patch's folder. The name of the file is readme and FAQ V1.0.

Ah ok. And the patch on Baka-Tsuki, does it work if you bought the PC games from internet in CD rom??

...Well, you have to download the appropriate patch. So, if you downloaded the demo, download the patch for the demo. Likewise, if you brought the disk for EP3, after installation, download the patch for EP3.

I'm pretty sure there isn't a patch for EP1 itself... unless anyone is willing to donate a copy of EP1 to the translators, so they can format a new patch...?

(And also, I'm sure you can buy copies of EP3 at HimeyaShop.com.)

EP 1 CD is VERY different in terms of programing then EP 1 demo

Good point, it looks like Himeya Shop got some more in stock(finally), so everyone still looking for the game has somewhere to find it.

Meanwhile, translation on ep2 has been progressing bit by bit, and once sterling comes back from the land of the dead and gives us what he's already translated, we will have more than 75% of the game finished.

With some extra stuff too, of course.

In short, it wouldn't be worth the effort of making the patch for the original episode 1, and since the demo that's out there for free is exactly the same, it wouldn't really do anyone any good.

Hey all, first time poster here, I just wanted to pop in a give a HUUUUGE thanks and "great job!" to the translation team for the Umineko game.

I downloaded the demo and the patch a few weeks ago and I had a great time with the story and characters and just the experience in general. Because of my great experience, I put in an order for the third and I'll probably be receiving it sometime next month. (the delay is because I pre-ordered something else as well.)

Anyways, I eagerly await each future update of these patches and once again, thanks a bunch all!

I ordered ep 3 already (ignore anything I said about giving up) and although you took it off, thank you for posting the scripts on baka-tsuki, cause I managed to read the ep 2 rough trans before it got removed so I can just skip to ep 3
