Russia decriminalizes forms of domestic violence

I... I just don't understand how a country can not feel ashamed when their own government vote for something like this? One of my friends called that Third World Mentality, and yet there are dozens of Third World countries that hold better human values than this.

Russian city sees domestic violence incidents double
after Putin decriminalises beatings:

"Between 12,000-14,000 Russian women are killed every year because of domestic
abuse."

Lotsa animals dying lately.

Gigantic Bats Are Dying Upside Down, Making Australia's
Heatwave Look Like a Horror Movie:

"If you’ve ever seen Australia’s grey-headed flying fox, you know that they’re absolutely
terrifying. With an average wingspan of over 3 feet, these threatened animals are
sometimes called megabats. But you haven’t really seen terrifying until you’ve seen the
flying fox dying by the hundreds, which is precisely what’s happening Down Under right
now."

650 whales stranded on New Zealand coast:

"A new pod of 240 whales swam aground at a remote New Zealand beach on Saturday
just hours after weary volunteers managed to refloat a different group of whales
following an earlier mass stranding.

In total, more than 650 pilot whales have beached themselves along a 5 kilometer (3
mile) stretch of coastline over two days on Farewell Spit at the tip of the South Island.
About 335 of the whales are dead, 220 remain stranded, and 100 are back at sea."

"New Zealand has one of the highest rates of whale strandings in the world, and
Friday's event was the nation's third-biggest in recorded history. The largest was in
1918, when about 1,000 pilot whales came ashore on the Chatham Islands. In 1985,
about 450 whales stranded in Auckland."

"Wines" for pets

Quote:
Both [companies] ran discount promotions for Valentine’s Day. Both have come up with clever names for their products: For $11.95, people can buy Fluffy an 8-ounce bottle of Catbernet or Pinot Meow from Apollo Peak, which is based in Denver.

Or for $14.95, they can pour 12 ounces of Meow & Chandon from Pet Winery of Fort Myers, Fla.

Since alcohol can harm cats, these products are essentially catnip water, which can make a cat loopy and an owner happy.

But based on a wine tasting I conducted at a local cat cafe-slash-adoption center, the products are primarily catnip for the owners: The shelter cats did not like wines from either company — only two of them indulged — but the people visiting the tastings loved the concept.
My cat can stick with water.

Physicists assure us that we're not living in an alternate reality where Trump is president

Quote:
There's a theory going around online that CERN (the European Organization for Nuclear Research) experiments have caused the world to shift into an alternate reality where Donald Trump has become president.

As most people would agree, this clearly can be labeled fake news.

"CERN's research captures the imagination of lots of people, which is why CERN has been featured in a lot of science fiction books, even movies, around the world," a spokesperson for CERN told CNBC when asked about the Trump theory.

Trump theorists cite "the Mandela effect," a phenomenon that occurs when large groups of people believe something happened even though evidence shows it isn't true. Some think more of these incidents have occurred since CERN was established, and suggest that its particle physics experiments are causing the world to shift into parallel universes. People are recalling the original reality, which is why there is divergent thought according to the believers.

In Trump's case, conspiracy theorists have cited "evidence" like his quote on terrorist attacks on Sweden and assertions that Muslims were cheering in the streets after 9/11, both events which they believe stem from memories of a parallel universe Trump used to reside in. A shift could also explain a rash of unprecedented outcomes in sports, like the Chicago Cubs winning their first World Series since 1908, and Donald Trump's election to the presidency, despite most polls predicting Hillary Clinton was going to win. The idea has generated several joke threads (and perhaps serious threads) on internet message board Reddit.

What's probably really happening is that people have lapses in memory, especially when they aren't paying close attention to details.

In any case, CERN's research isn't focused on finding a way to travel to different dimensions. The facility brings together physicists from more than 60 countries and 600 institutions to explore the structure of the universe, using the smallest particles and making them collide at almost the speed of light.
This is clearly bullshit. El Psy Congroo.

Man killed by six-ton pornography collection

Quote:
A 50-year-old Japanese man was killed when the six tons — that’s 12,000 pounds! — of porn magazines he owned fell on top of him, according to the U.K. Mirror.

The body of the dead man, a former car-maker who was identified only as Joji, was found six months later when the landlord went to his apartment to collect unpaid rent.

A member of the team sent to clean the flat revealed the man died under the magazines. It is unclear if he had a heart attack and fell into the massive stack of mags, which toppled onto him, or if he was crushed by the sheer volume of porn.
That's a big load. Dude clearly had issues. He probably couldn't push them off of himself because they all stuck together.
At least he died surrounded by what he loved.
A happy ending.

RIP

Russian lawmaker aims to make football hooliganism a sport:

"A Russian lawmaker has proposed an unorthodox solution to the country's problems with
soccer hooliganism ahead of next year's World Cup - legalize it and make it a spectator
sport.

Organized groups of Russian fans, many with martial arts training, fought English fans on
the streets of Marseille during last year's European Championship.

That inspired Igor Lebedev, who sits in the Russian parliament, to draw up rules for what
he calls "draka," the Russian word for "fight" - 20 fighters on each side, unarmed, in an
arena."

That Viral Story About a Japanese Man Crushed to Death by
His Porn Collection is Totally Fake:

"Did a man in Japan really get crushed to death by his porn collection? No. But you’d be
forgiven for thinking otherwise, thanks to this dumb game of Telephone we call The
Internet.

“Porn really is bad for you!” the Daily Mail headline blares. “Lonely Japanese man who
amassed a SIX-TON pile of dirty magazines died when it collapsed on top of him... and his
body wasn’t found for six months.”

But almost nothing about that headline is correct. The Daily Mail seems to have taken a
sad story of a man’s death in Japan and added a few lies to make it more sensational. And
from there it went viral, getting picked up by the likes of The Mirror, The Toronto Sun, CBS
Philly, and Sky News Australia, among a host of others."
