Well, rather than generating a long list, I took a quick look at my anime bookcase (approx. 175 DVDs so far), and came up with the following rough statistics: About 50% of my purchases were influenced by fansubs, 25% by TV, and 25% by word of mouth/reviews/etc. If I had to guess, maybe half of the fansub-influenced purchases might have happened anyway based on other factors... but keeping in mind that, if it weren't for fansubs, I almost certainly wouldn't have gotten as interested in anime as I am now. (Before I knew of fansubs, I never watched much anime, nor considered purchasing anime DVDs.)

As for lists though...

Amazon has FMP for less than $10 each used for 1-5.

I wonder what Elfen Lied will be in English, I hope just as creepy.

Question

Spiral, Kodocha, KGNE, Kanon, Popotan, Elfen Lied, Windy Tales, Mahou Shoujotai, Aishiteruze Baby, Avenger, Hikaru no Go...I think that's it.

Spiral and Popotan are starting to come out right about now. I pre-ordered the first two discs of Spiral. I probably wouldn't have tried them if they haven't been free. Popotan looks a lot stupider than it really is.

There are also, of course, things I wouldn't touch with a pole now I've seen them. Midori no Hibi and Konomini, for example.

EDIT: Oh, and Bottle Fairy, too.

EDIT2: Also, 2x2=Shinobuden.

Licenses series I plan on buying...

Azumanga Diaoh: waiting for a series box set
Pretear: see Azu
Full Metal Alchemist: probably wait for box set until dvds beyond ep 30 are released, which is where I left off watching before it got licensed
To Heart: will buy asap
.hack: would have bought it, but my car decided it wanted new tires instead.
Aoi Umi no Tristia: it's only one dvd, its decent, why not

Unlicenced series I would buy if they became licensed...

Final Approach
Genshiken
Girls Bravo
Kiminozo
School Rumble
Sensei No Ojikan
To Heart ~Remember My Memories~

Maybe I'm forgetting some, but this is what I could think of off the top of my head.

I will definitely purchase FMA, Tactics, Kyou Kara Maoh, Saiyuki Reload, Meine Leibe (if licensed), and Harukanaru Toki no Naka de (if licensed). I am in the process of collecting Peacemaker, Inuyasha (of coarse), Twelve Kingdoms, Wolf's Rain, and yes, I admit i buy Yu-Gi-Oh dvd's as well. Imagine how much money I could save if I didn't buy anime. Perish the thought! My life would really be boring then.....

Already Bought:
Angelic Layer
.Hack//Sign & Legend of the Twilight Bracelet
Kimagure Orange Road
Maison Ikkoku
(Thanks to stupid contract with rightstuff
I won't be buying boxes 4->)
Initial D
Patlabor II
Arjuna
Cowboy Bebop
Utena Movie
Escaflowne Series
etc

Though I have bought quite a lot
of series based only on reviews (or would
have bought even without seeing)
Like:
Kurogane Communication
Disney's Miyazaki releases
Oh My Goddess OAV
Roujin X
Green Legend Ran
Saber Marionette Ultimate Box (or whatever)
Silent Möbius
(Shoud not have spent euros on that)
etc

I think out of ca 140 DVDs (R1, R2 (Scandinavia) or R4) I have bought (all during the last one and half years), half I bought because of fansubs. Rest I could have previewed in one way or another but ended up just buying them because of reviews.

At least these series I would buy without any hesitation based on fansubs:
Twin Spica
Touch (Someone, please, licence it)
And lots of others like PlanetES with less priority.
Cheap box releases would help to decide.

All in all I have to say that I'm buying as much anime as I can afford and probably when I get my M.Sc (and a job), I'll buy all the anime I'll be watching or rewatching.
And I hope that most people (at least when they mature ) will have some conscience and buy some of the shit they watch.
(I just hope that anime will have a fast start with HD-DVD and/or Blue ray.)
(I can('t) wait for a HD release of Ghost in the Shell.)

I think he means the Galaxy Express 999 television series. It was the movies that were released by Viz.

Of course he might be meaning the Galaxy Railways DVDs, but you shouldn't need fansubs to buy those. It's a Leiji Matsumoto series, the name alone sells the series.

fansubbing has helped me on what to buy. I'll definetly buy samurai champloo. I've brought the getbackers even though i have the fansubs. Will buy read or die tv when i get the money cause. Had i not seen the fansubs, I wouldn't touch it. Although it's also helped me not to buy some anime. Tenjo tenge looks good on paper and i betcha a lotta reviewers will pin it as a fighting anime. From the story and covers it's just what i loves from anime. but when seeing it i hated it and would've been pissed if i paid 30$ for 3 or 4 episodes!

I doubt adv had a choice in that. It sounds like something the japanese company required in licensing so japanese fans don't import the much cheaper, higher episode count r1 dvds. It should still work out cheaper at $18 each though. Plus it'll probably be $12 at best buy, which would still work out to only $24 for 4 episodes. Some online stores might be even cheaper. you just have to know where to look.

I like everyone else here has an extensive anime dvd collection. Much of which was bought because of AMV's which lead to fan subs which lead to me buying the anime. However the most notable example of an anime I will be buying is Samurai Champloo but I'll wait until the box set comes out since it looks like adv will be releasing it as 2 episodes a dvd since the first volume is 50 - 54 min. Also bleach and samurai seven would be included.
