Can anyone elaborate living areas [towns] to me? Is there one in each of the floating castle's floor or are there just specific floors with towns on it. I recall them using a teleport stone calling out an area name so I was just wondering..
Spoiler:
there is one major City per floor with several smaller villages. Each City has a Gate in the center which player can use to move between floors. Once a Floor has been clear and the Gate has activated, any player can move to any city that has been open. Beside the City Gate, players can also use return crystals to return to town.
Players can buy real estate from NPC brokers if they can afford it. You can rent a room form a inn, church or NPC homes (cost a bit more but better accommodations). Beside Homes, player can also own and run business, Stores, Smithies, Clothes Shops, Restaurateur.
After Aria in the starless night, when Kirito and Asuna parted ways after defeating the Kobold boss, when and where did they meet after that? What volume and chapter is that?
After Aria in the starless night, when Kirito and Asuna parted ways after defeating the Kobold boss, when and where did they meet after that? What volume and chapter is that?
Spoiler:
They meet up a few days later on the second floor. It's another sidestory called "Rondo of the Transient Sword" which isn't part of the volumes.
There's some confusion over exactly what's canon since the author is writing these early floor stories after the later floor stories and contradicting some of the details, but basically there's never any long period of time in which they're out of touch, so there isn't any kind of dramatic reunion if that's what you're expecting.

Ah, thanks for clearing that for me.
Spoiler for Question about Aria in the Starless Night:
Also, don't you think was Asuna already in love with Kirito in Aria in the Starless Night?
Look at this:
Quote:
"......To tell the truth, Kirito, I followed you here to thank you."
"......For the cream bread, and the bath?"
As I asked without thinking, "That's not it," she replied in a somewhat scary voice, and she immediately continued with a "......Although, that may be a part of it too."
"That's right...... there are a lot of things. Thanks for the many things. I...... In this world, for the first time I found an aim, something that I want to chase after."
"Heeh...... What is it?"
As I glanced at her, Asuna flashed a brief smile,
"It's a secret."
Perhaps not in love but has feelings or attracted to him, but still, it leaves me confused as the Morning Dew Girl which occurred on Oct 2024 mentioned that Asuna fell in love with him half a year ago.
Also what do you think caused Asuna to scream in Kirito's bath? I was just really curious about this scene since Kirito mentioned that he had no memory of what happened, so I wanted to ask people about what they think.

Spoiler for reply:
The something she can aims for may be clearing the game. Before she met Kirito all she wanted was kill as many mobs as possible before dying, now she wants to clear the game and survive. She may have been interested, but falling in love because someone offered you cream and a bath is a bit too easy.
Asuna screamed because Argo went into the bathroom while Asuna was bathing (side note, is Argo male or female?).
Quote:
An ear splitting scream that shook the entire room. Subsequently, flying out from that room, was not the player named Argo.
Since it was not Argo coming out, it is most likely Asuna. Kirito was also in town, so he couldn't have been knocked out due to the crime prevention code. My guess is he saw Asuna in underwear (or even naked if you can take them off) when she rushed out of the bath. The visual impact was too much for innocent Kirito, who barely talked to girls in RL, causing him to faint (out of happiness)

She screamed because Argo walked in on her. Plus she's in the bath, with a boy she just met her age next door.... Pretty normal reaction I'd say.
As for the romance, I wholeheartedly agree that Asuna's feelings for Kirito began in Aria.
Kirito basically saved Asuna from despair. She was reckless to the point of being suicidal, and he convinced her through his words and actions to continue living and fight the game back. He became Asuna's hero, and with that kind of admiration easily became feelings of attraction.
After parting, she probably heard of his exploits, causing her to admire him even more. When she reunited with him and started to spend more time around Kirito, her feelings would grow further. I'm sure she fell in love around that time.

Spoiler for asd:
Argo is a female
Quote:
"I feel awkward about buying a girl's information, so I will refrain from doing it."
"Nihihi, you have a good heart."
The person who said this at the limit of shamelessness was perhaps Aincrad's first informant; the one known as «Argo the Rat» laughed.
Wasn't this about buying information about Asuna? What Kirito assumed was that Argo would be willing to sell information about her stats if I remember right?

Spoiler for reply:
Indeed it was ^^, but 2 lines underneath that quote, this stands: "That was a warning by someone. However, the actual Argo replied she had not once sold free information for money." -> Argo is female
Was the quote below in my first spoiler during the Lisbeth side story, or a different one?
Spoiler for Kirito/Asuna spoilers:
According to the quote that Asuna said she "fell in love with Kirito 6 months ago", puts it around the time of Murder Case happening. The scene at the hill where they take a nap is, in my opinion, probably the spark that caused her to pursue him seriously. That and the events that followed while they played detectives together.
ME1 expands upon the Kirito/Asuna interactions more during this critical "6 months prior" period. The below spoiler is a large summary of what occurred in ME1, which takes place before Murder Case by around a week. If you'd like to see the version that is in manga form, google is your friend.
Spoiler for ME1 synopsis, long:
Kirito and Klein had tried to feed the boss loads and loads of meat to fill it up, dubbed the "Grand Meaty Meat Plan". The plan had failed to work, so they quickly ran back to the unbreakable gate that separated the floor boss and the village. Arriving back they went to the agreed upon location, a nearby INN.
Kirito and Asuna had been debating over the 56th floor boss weaknesses and had been trying to find a way to kill the large armored worm, Geocrawler. Kirito and Klein had tried various 'unorthodox' methods to defeat the floor boss which had greatly annoyed Asuna, who called them out for goofing off. She then 'orders' them to join the next raid boss attempt under the KoB's command (she is sub-leader). Asuna had planned to open the gate to the village and use the NPC's as bait to lure the boss into the village. If possible they would close the gate after Geocrawler had entered so the raid could attack the non-armored part of the boss and retreat was impossible. NPCs dying and the village being destroyed was likely to happen with this plan.
Kirito spoke out saying that killing the town NPCs would harm fellow players because they couldn't turn quests in or use the shops anymore. He was going to call them 'alive' but Asuna interrupted him saying that NPCs respawn in 24 hours after dying. She calls his priorities misplaced, maintaining that as one of the elite players in SAO, clearing floors as quickly as possible is the only important goal and as members of the clearing group this status quo must be upheld.
Klein made some comments about miss sub-leaders level being higher than people who like him who were 'goofing off' and saying how his own level wasn't quite as high as miss sub-leaders. She then boasted that her level was 3 levels above Klein's as proof of how serious she was about clearing the game (standard MMO epe, err, ego boasting). Klein, not missing a beat, slapped Kirito on the back and mentioned that Kirito's level was 4 above him.
Asuna was shocked, and Kirito decided to try to diffuse the situation. After saying that he didn't want to force his opinion from a difference in levels, he unfortunately said something that provoked her. Going to quote it now word for word: "Just that.. Is "progressing" simply using the fastest and most efficient methods to defeat the bosses? Abandoning slow-leveling comrades, killing NPCs, wouldn't these means cause your most important parameter... your "heart", to get tainted?"
In Asuna's mind this was a blatant insult, and Kirito had also given her a look of pity while talking about the heart. Clinching her fist, she replied that "Those words! I'll have you back them up with your weapon!" and a First Strike duel request popped up in front of Kirito.
Before Kirito accepted, Klein had tried to apologize for what had happened before half-heartedly telling him to back off. Kirito did not shy away from combat and accepted after a snark reply to Klein.
As the timer counted down, Asuna was thinking that "I must not lose to someone who enjoys this death game. My real body is still rotting away somewhere until this game is finished."
At the same time, Kirito was similarly deep in thought about Asuna. "She's just like me... the me from three months ago. I had those same eyes back then."
First Strike duels end after one player lands a clean hit on the other.. or when a player's HP is reduced to under 50% hp.
When the duel timer hit 0, Asuna wasted no time and began her assault. Asuna, who had a focus on weapon speed and agi, used low delay sword skills to force Kirito on the defense. After Asuna had used several sword skills in a row trying to land the first hit, Kirito prepared for his attack knowing she would be taking a pause of rest in a moment. She would also know that his counterattack would come at that point. Knowing his opponent was strong, he decided that "It can't be helped. It's not really fair, but I'll use that."
During a short gap in Asuna's attack pattern, Kirito decided to make his move. He raised his right hand weapon into the starting animation pose for activating an overhead 1h straight sword slash. Asuna, who knew every variation on the attack Kirito was about to perform, felt that he had just made a major error that would give her the win. After parrying his slash she would be able to land a weak yet very quick sword skill.
As she finished this thought, Kirito's left hand reached behind his back and grabbed hold of another blade before starting to activate a sword skill, a high speed horizontal slash attack which required the sword to be in the scabbard. His skill fully activated and slashed at her with almost no delay. Flabbergasted at how he could manipulate the item window in combat, she quickly determined that the second blade would hit her first, and moved to parry.
Kirito's second blade, however, had seemingly vanished as her sword approached his now empty hand. He had activated a sword skill but apparently released his grip on the blade a mere moment before he performed the attack animation. Due to slight system lag, his initial movement had shown the proper glow with the same color and length of a sword skill for nearly half of the attack animation before it faded to nothing as the system caught up. With her blade gracefully whiffing through the air mere centimeters above his left hand, she knew she had been duped by a feint. Kirito's first sword, the one she at first thought had made a grave error, silently cut into her now exposed left side.
Hours later and she was still berating herself for losing to what she called a "technique outside the system." She moaned some more about how he used a combat style like that, and that he had laughed after the match was over. Unknowingly Asuna had triggered a flag for one of the imouto NPCs in the village, which sang her a lullaby. That lullaby had a clue about the floor boss. Played with the appropriate tune with high enough skill, Geocrawler would fall asleep.
When the 56th floor boss celebration party happened the next day, Asuna had avoided the party but came in near the end. She saw Kirito there, smiling happily and holding the imouto (the one that had given Asuna the clue last night) in the air and twirling her around. Asuna then realized that "That person.. isn't just 'progressing.' He's living.. in this world. " As she thought that, Cardinal suddenly gave a warning to Kirito for inappropriate contact towards NPCs. A sweat bead appeared on her head and she thought "...." as she rolled her eyes.
The last line of ME1 says "In 8 months these two will get married, a mere two weeks before the game is cleared." If the game was cleared in early Nov, then ME1 took place sometime in March.
Murder Case takes place on floor 57, during April, while they were still clearing the labyrinth towards the next floor.
About Argo..
Spoiler for ME7 / Aria continuation spoilers:
During the Aria continuation (ME7), there's a quote that confirms Argo is female. This takes place only a couple hours after Illfang died (ep2 of anime.)
Kirito had activated the second floor's warp gate and quickly ran into a side building up to the second floor and started «hiding» so he wouldn't draw attention from being the one to activate the next level. He mentions that during the beta, players who had cleared the boss floor and thus activated the next floor's primary city were cheered and congratulated while fanfare rang in the newly unlocked main city - there were several players looking for whoever had unlocked the gate, to no avail. However he had just taken the title of beater in front of slightly more than 40 players. Although only those 40 players knew what he looked like, he did not want to expose himself openly this early in the game. This is why he hid and watched the celebrations unfolding below him.
After watching for a few minutes, he spotted somebody he knew.
"A female player who had just warped out of the Transfer Gate did not stop, but continued dashing towards the western side of the town. If it was just that, it could be seen as hurrying to the weapon shop or the quest starter NPC, but the problem was the two men who came out of the gate right after her. They took a moment to look around, and once they had spotted the girl, they started rushing toward the same direction. From the look of it, it was «Two guys chasing a girl». "
He follows the trio outside the city and finds Argo trapped by two players from a ninja guild. After being witty and intelligent, Kirito successfully scares off both players by having mobs aggro them. Argo, as quoted by Kirito, did something unexpected:
"Two small arms stretching from behind embraced me tightly. I could feel a soft and warm sense of touch on my back, along with a faint whisper,
"......You're pretty cool-yo, Kiri-bou."
That voice was, of course, from Argo who was staying silent until this moment. However, the tone of her voice was subtly different from the «Rat»'s usual slightly hateful tone—— "
She held onto him for roughly a minute or two. Argo had known about his self sacrifice by proclaiming himself a beater just hours before. As a fellow beta tester she was very thankful. She offered him any piece of info for free, and he asked about her whiskers. One thing lead to another and they were both breathing heavily inside an inn, sweat mixing as they pressed against each other. Jk, jk, Kirito learned a new skill and how Argo got her whiskers, simultaneously.
I don't think Kirito would be happy to have a guy giving him a hug/embrace for a minute.
The something she can aims for may be clearing the game. Before she met Kirito all she wanted was kill as many mobs as possible before dying, now she wants to clear the game and survive. Spoiler for :
Well Kirito did save her from that dungeon though. But yeah maybe you're right, instead of just "I'll try to clear this game, who cares if I die? At least, I tried and did something" to "I'll try to end this game, but I'll surely survive and see the end of this"

Morning Dew Girl (Aincrad 22nd Floor, October 2024)
"She fell in love half a year ago. They became clearing partners two weeks ago. And only a mere six days had passed since they got married and moved here, within the forest of the twenty-second floor."
So yeah, it was said in Yui-chan's story
Also, does anyone know why Argo calls him Kiri-bou?
Also, should I read the light novel's chronologically? Although I read Volume 1 first, but I haven't read The Black Swordsman, Red Nosed reindeer + skimmed Aria in the starless night since I saw it in the Anime adaptation.

Argo speaks in a very odd way in the LNs (if I had to guess, Kansai dialect?) although it didn't translate very well to anime, that is likely why she calls him the way she does. IIRC, Kiri-bou is how Argo has always referred to Kirito. They knew each other in the beta test. The ninjas that pursued Argo in my spoiler post above also were speaking similar to Argo, saying -gozaru after every sentence and other crazy speech patterns.
Reading the LNs chronologically is certainly an option, although it would be very awkward having to jump around constantly, imo. I read Vol 1 before I read any of the side stories and it worked out just fine for me.
Reading the SAO arc in chronological order would involve reading the first 2/3 chapters in Vol 1 before reading nearly every side story and ME doujins, starting with First Day and then Aria/Aria cont and then Rondo. When vol 1 comes to the "present" in ch4 (I think it is ch4, not sure) every side story has been completed (except for a brief passage in one of Lisbeth's side stories that coincides with the end of vol 1).
Really, either way is up to you. If you read the side stories first Kirito gets a lot more character development, but you also will spoil things before they are "supposed" to happen. Not a big deal, really, so that's why I think either way is fine. You will eventually get around to reading both anyways

You can read the next anime arc "Murder Case", but DO NOT read "Warmth of the Heart" thinking its okay after watching the anime version. Finish vol. 1 first.
Since Silica is the youngest? or one of the youngest in SAO, was there mention of the oldest gamer? I've seen and heard of players over 50 in a few MMOs.
Since Silica is the youngest? or one of the youngest in SAO, was there mention of the oldest gamer? I've seen and heard of players over 50 in a few MMOs.
Spoiler:
She's one of the younger ones, but not the youngest. There's actually an "orphanage" on the 1st floor, where the really young kids stick together.
The oldest player is an old man who ran the company in charge of maintaining the SAO network connections. He decided to test the game out himself because he has those old fashioned "see my work with my own eyes" values. He's not a gamer though so he spends his time raising his fishing skill in areas with no monsters.
Yeah, it's at least possible to cut a guy's arm off.
Or break a sword, if you hit it at the right spot.
Spoiler for spoilers to be sure:
So in theory it should be possible to disarm(no pun intended) someone or stop them from using sword skills by preventing the proper motion for happening?
Sorry, I can't help but theorycraft about how "real" the combat mechanics of SAO are
