Favorite Sports Anime

What is your favorite anime that has as one of its central themes a sport? Sports does not have to be the only focus, but it definately needs to be a big one.

My vote goes for Touch.

P.S. I'm trying to see if there are any good ones I have missed and should start watching :P

Touch is more of a growing up story than about baseball if you ask me.

My vote would go for Hajime no Ippo!

Well, aren't most sports stories more about growing up or whatever than they are about sports? I've never seen one that was JUST about sports.

My favorite is Major, though Touch is also really good.

I just realized that I've never watched that many sports animes, despite the fact I really enjoy a lot of mangas in the genre.

Mine is Eyeshield 21, has the normal theme of overpowering obstacles with teamwork, friends and practice but quite a lot of comedy too.

Proberly the whole novelty of seeing American football at all, helps. I never see sports over here, apart from football (soccer to some of you).

Whistle is a very good one. But then again I haven't seen too many sports ones.

Hmm, well here's my list of manga/anime that's worthwhile to have read/seen (or at least know of) in the sports genre

Old School (and I mean these are old, primarily for historical reference)

Ashita no Joe (Boxing)
Dokaben (Baseball)
Kyojin no hoshi (Baseball)
Dash! Kappei (Basketball)
Ore wa Teppei (Kendo)
Karate Baka Ichidai (Karate)

Classics (These will last)

Yawara (Judo)
Touch (Baseball)
Slam Dunk (Basketball)
Hajime no Ippo (Boxing)
Captain Tsubasa (Soccer)
Ace wo nerae (Tennis)
Attack No1 (Volleyball)

Personal Recommendations that don't fit in the above

Stopper Busujima (Baseball)
Captain (Baseball)
Yuke! Inachu takkyubu (Ping Pong)
Eyeshield 21 (American Football)

Debatable

Rough (Swimming and Diving)
Grappler Baki (Pro-Wresting, if you call this genre sports)
Jajauma Grooming Up! (Horse racing, this is more on the raising of horses, but I recommend this one highly)
Nangoku Icehockey Team (Ice Hockey)
Sora no Campus (Gymnastics)

Major S1 is my favorite, hands down. Consistently brilliant writing and tremendous character depth.

If you are coming from a primarily action oriented anime scene I would suggest starting with the following.

Hungry Heart
Eyeshield 21 (I do not like this one, but I will leave it up to you )
Whistle

after you get adjusted to it and want some more in depth stories you should take a look at the following.

Touch (older anime)
Major (easy transition)
Aoki Densetsu Shoot! (older anime)

...

I would have placed Major in the original list, but it starts off a little heavy.

Hope that helps.

my favorite sports and all-time favorite anime too is Touch... It made me like baseball^^

I also loved Hikari no densetsu, Ashita no Jo and Ace wo nerae, which are very nice classics.

I've seen both and I'd have to say that Hiatari Ryoukou is better.

The main reason is that I like Yuusaku a LOT better than Tatsuya. Yuusaku is the go get-'em, decisive type. And his relationship with Kasumi seems a lot more natural than the Tatsuya-Minami-Kazuya love triangle.

Captain Tsubasa! You should watch Route to 2002, it makes a summary of the old series (lol, I remember that in the original series it took like a week for Tsubasa to kick the ball) and what happens after of course (hence the tittle route to 2002). Other than that: Slam Dunk!

Akagi is a prospective of mine that would probably break into my top five anime of all time list if it gets finished being subbed by Triad. Gosh, the balls and nerves of steel this guy has makes the anime all the more interesting to watch.
