I highly doubt that anything dangerous would happen to the girls, but I won't rule out a sad ending for Shirase, in that she — or the expedition — would find conclusive evidence that her mum died in Antarctica. Even if it turns out this way, it'll probably be pitched as an uplifting story, about an explorer who followed her heart and braved the final frontier.

It's really interesting that I should stumble on this anime, so shortly after returning from a holiday in Tasmania, where I came upon a private yacht owner offering to take tourists to Antarctica. The offer piqued my interest, and as luck would have it, I discovered this series as I researched about travel to the southern continent.

I hope, though, that the producers include at least some content about the adverse environmental impact of Antarctic tourism.

According to folks in the know, it's one of the common stopovers if you're trying to fly from Narita Japan to Perth Australia.

Be that as it may, it still leaves me wondering why the producers would want to insert an image of Singapore. Most transit passengers are unlikely to leave the airport while waiting for a connecting flight (and by the way, Singapore's Changi Airport is one of the best places in the world for air travellers to make a protracted stopover, so there's even less reason to go through the hassle of passing to-and-fro the immigration checkpoint).

Not that I'd mind an episode set in Singapore, but I don't think it would advance the story.

Really nice series so far, the action and feelings all seem very believable. The mother seems a bit too savage though, first trying to assassinate her daughter with a wet towel, then traumatising her with a ladle attack...

To be fair, her daughter was making plans to go to Antarctica without telling her. Some might say she got off easy.

I thought she got off incredibly easily. She had plotted behind her parents backs for weeks and even, it appeared, forged their names on the permission forms. Other than the demands of the story, it's hard to believe many parents would let her go after all that. They really needed another scene after the soup-ladle attack where we see the family all agree to let her go.

After the father’s “brave” act (and his only appearance) is that even necessary? The sister shows her support so there’s something.

In the end it was important to have that kind big clearing of the air with episode 5. Mari making a move to change things would of course have consequences. No doubt the visual symbolism of her breaking free the water and letting it flow fit well.

Some potentially toxic feelings had been building up in general. Mari's dislike of herself and being so reliant on her friend. But also Megumi's feelings were in a tricky place. Too reliant on being relied on and feeling empty if she wasn't feeling superior to Mari. Makes sense she gave up the whole game system so she wouldn't be reminded of something that Mari was better than her at.

Not too surprising that when Mari started to move away from her that Megumi responded by various large and small attempts to trouble her or upset her. It was good to finally clear the air and even attempt to end the friendship. But also glad that Mari handled things as well as she did and refuse to accept that .

There are things to talk about when she gets back and the time apart will probably be good for Megumi's development as a person. Now that she's really faced her flaws she should be able to start growing a bit. But it's more of a feel good moment to have Mari still make clear that Megumi is her precious friend.

I was actually at Singapore over the weekend, which made me delay watching this episode.... so it's a strange feeling when they suddenly had that money shot of the Merlion at the end.

Also, this show continues to be great at giving the feels without feeling tacky, like with Mari and Megumi, and that bit with Rin at the end. T_T

Her mother was going to be unhappy about forging permission slip (not a good idea), but the show really went over the top with the whole horror movie atmosphere, Mum could stand to be slightly more nuanced character. It is sensible that she has to pass all her tests to get to Antarctica; this really is only a small complaint.

This show inspired me to reread Kipling's poem 'The English Flag' with a few memorable verses about Polar explorers (The North Pole, but you're bound to think of Scott). I cried a little because there are people who live by stronger convictions or emotions than I've ever felt in my life.

The New Yorker has a long biographical story today about Henry Worsley, the man who tried to follow in Shacketon's footsteps and hike across Antarctica. He nearly made it.

I can't say it filled me with the desire to visit Antartica myself though.

Wow, from the sightseeing content of episode 6, it really heightened my interest to visit Australia someday.

Ah, passport drama. They should be more aware in the future!

A bloody Shaggy Dog Story in the end. But good development for both Shirase and Hinata. "We all go Together!" was important for Shirase. He friends are as important as the trip.

Another good episode. Though when in a foreign country, my passport and my tickets would be my biggest concern and I would keep checking to make sure I have them. Beautiful scenery, and can’t wait till they get to Australia!

They aren't in Australia yet, though. This episode was a layover in Singapore before they catch the connecting flight to Fremantle, Australia.

wow, at least shirase and hinata have 20 over heart now.

i'm glad we got a little character development even if the issue felt a little forced. still i liked the slice of life part of the episodes, with "i'll murder you" line being my favorite

the 1 million yen still not used, even though god 4 tickets for that cost would have been a huuuge hnnggg.

They cancel the 1millon tickets right?. RIGHT!!??

great chapter, I thought the passaport was in the yellow purse they left in the room before the went to sightseeing, but shirase having it was more funny.

What a fun episode for such an earth-shattering problem. Anyone in my family would cry for hours in the nearest bed if that happened to any of us. Good to know the antartica crew is made of stronger stuff.

Another good episode that not only gave Yuzuki the screentime she needed so much (and as expected, she's the serious one in the looney bin), but also got to see some much needed bonding between the two most peculiar members of the team. Hinata has already proven to not be your average young girl, and same goes to Shirase, so something along these lines is very welcome. Very glad to see there wasn't much anger over the issue, just trying to solve because the clock is ticking, and while the ending was expected, it was still nice to see Shirase values their bond so much, because its certainly a special one.

Shirase said so, yes.

Agreed, I was laughing hard at that reveal. I expected something along those lines happening, but Shirase's reaction made it golden. And Yuzuki didn't even need to glare to be terrifying. I'm usually not into nerve-wrecking stuff, but if this same staff did a thriller of sorts, I'd be up for it.

I hope they sent the e-mail. It would have been rude not to, and the adults waiting in Fremantle would have worried needlessly.

It's not necessary. They managed to get their original seats back and refund the business class tickets, so they're leaving on the original schedule anyway.
