Okay, I'm really confused now....

So what the heck is going on? Ciel doesn't know Grell, Lau is alive, Avelain (or whatever his name was) is back (right...?)... but other than how confusing this is getting... great episode, feels just like the good old days with Grell, who was hilarious as always and Undertaker too!
Yay! Claude seems to be showing up next week! I hope things will be cleared up soon cause I'm starting to get a headache >.<

I watched the episode while doing something else so I probably missed a lot of things but my guess is that Ciel isn't in a dream after all. He just lost his memories, he clearly had no idea who Grell was, which seemed to confuse Grell a bit at first, however, he was far too obsessed with his beloved Sebastian to care. The policeman also seemed surprised to see Ciel, and later remarked that the Queen's dog had returned to London, meaning he's been missing for a while.

As for Lau, as far as I remember, his death wasn't clearly shown, so he could have survived. I have no idea why he would act so friendly toward Ciel though... did Sebastian ask everyone to play along? Or maybe everyone's memories were tampered with? Sebastian and Grell obviously kept their memories, but it may simply be because they're not humans.

Ep 2+ takes place before season 1, when Ciel just had met Sebastian and didn't know Undertaker or Grell. They want to show us how Phantomhive and Trancy first met, then go back to the main timeline when Ciel was dead and finally wakes up.

But then again, who knows whats going on?

I wouldn't be surprised if this came true, especially after this weeks episode. Either way i really love how this season is playing out, and just keeps on throwing questions to us. Especially when i was expecting no Sebastian or Ciel.

I doubt those episodes take place before season 1, since Grell and Sebastian know each other quite well already. And another evidence that at least Ciel's memory was altered: when Ciel saw Grell, he was reminded of someone else who used to wear red (Madam Red of course), but he couldn't remember who she was.

Firstly, Madam Red is still alive there.
Secondly, Aberlain is still alive there.

Anyway, there are still a lot of details confirming that, but the main is: it can't be smth with Ciel losing his memory simply because of the dead charas. That (ridiculous in my opinion) theory can't be true. They can make Ciel lose him memory, but I doubt they're able to revive completely DEAD charas. (It's different story with Ciel 'cos he has a contract with Seb, so the rules can't be applied to him)"

After reading your post, I realized that as I thought, I missed a lot of things.

So yeah, apparently, Ciel asks Sebastian not to tell anything about the case to Madam Red, so he definitely knows her and thinks she's alive. There is still one problem with the prequel theory: Grell and Sebastian met for the first time in S1 IIRC (feel free to correct me), yet they know each other perfectly here.

I'm pretty sure they are trying to make us think it's a prequel, but I don't think it's that simple.

I just don't see why they'd pull of the prequel route, i mean the first episode worked perfectly as a sequel to the end of the first season, so it wouldn't make much sense. If we use the idea that we're still set in a time after the first season, then we can use the theory that Ciel has lost parts of his memory after the events that taken place at the end of the first season (what we believed would be Sebastian would take his soul), so it's understandable to think that he'd be in the shape he's in now.

I was gonna carry on going with the 'it's a dream' theory though

Seeing that Ciel has forgotten about Grell and such is troubling, along with the fact that Grell and Sebastian know about the events of the first season.

So with the knowledge we have so far, i'm gonna go with Ciel loosing some of his memory. It could be spread out so all humans have (going by the events of the second episode), though personally i don't know how the writers could pull that one off.

So yeah speculation hell really . Either way i can't wait to see how the rest of this season plays out.

This is getting really twisty and mysterious, I'm really interested to see how the series is going to play out.

after watching the latest episode one thing is clear

episode one is realy the continuation of season one while episode 2 and 3 are more like in before the end of season 1 and in between season 1 and 2

Yeah...the story twist is just too random...there's got to be something going on, like memories (tons of flash backs to explain Ciel and Alois' relationship to eachother), some kind of creepy dream-parallel-world or maybe Ciel just lost some of his memories.

About Ciel not remembering Grell, I do sorta have a theory, or at least a vague idea of what may have happened. I don't think the whole thing after ep 1 is a prequel, neither a dream sequence. I'm thinking more about the lines of an parallel universe/changed fate kinda thing. The reason for me believing in this, is because of the spider symbolism. Most commonly they are weavers of fate, which basically means that they can design up your life, or even change the course of events, be it past or present. They can also represent death, rebirth etc..But then again, it's different in each culture. I checked the Japanese symbolism (which is taken from the Chinese)for spiders, and they basically represent something good, so go figure. But anyway, my guess is that Claude is a demon of fate, and thus, responsible for all the mess up.
