It's getting much, much harder to feel sympathy for Ranka, even if she's a young girl - Ozma spoiled her, and she's yet to get back on track... and worse for her, is being actively derailed. If she wants Alto, as she says she does, then she needs to do more than sit there and wait for him to run into her arms. Hell, even KLEIN was doing more with Mikhail than she did with Alto.
Of course, Alto wasn't helping things either, being tsun-tsun to them both.

Sorry the amount of repost but I had to quote these as acknowledgment of good criticism of Ranka. She indeed is young and unexperienced in life. This is part of the problem with the character from a development stand point. They make her 16 in years but they give her the body and mentality of a 12 year old. It's really poor development on their part in my opinion. As I said before they could have told this story the same with a slightly more mature character and still gotten a similar feel to it without all the hatred. I also heavily agree that it takes two to tango and that Ranka can't be blamed by herself in this. She certainly can't be blamed "solely" for Michael's death. There is nothing Ranka could have done even IF she sang well. The key to the song was her emotions which were completely shattered by the discovery of Alto and Sheryl up there. So singing wasn't the downfall. Not being 100% behind her song was and that was out of her control. This goes along with the immaturity of the character. BTW I don't think if she did sing well with emotion that much would have changed. The Vajra would have still attacked and there still would have been casualties. The only difference may have been Michael but his actions to protect Klan were ultimately what got him killed. In fact the whole sequence was odd. I'm not sure why all of them didn't go down the hall instead of just Alto and Michael. I guess I'll see if I get more insight when subs come out.
BTW I guess if you can't show Ranka or Sheryl naked, show lolicon Klan topless to make up for it. *sigh* These loli loving animators are killing me here.

I have to agree with most of this and disagree slightly with the last paragraph. I absolutely believe that you are right in that Ranka had to reach a point of despair to really understand her own potential. To be able to draw on that emotion in future performance and singing. I however think that Sheryl will probably always be greater in the sense of talent and power in the end. I do believe however that Sheryl will probably take a more active role in being Ranka's mentor and shaping her to be more professional. I am crossing my fingers for that.
Sheryl's music is motivational and moving, Ranka's music is special and has magical properties. Together they will both motivate their own and also help with the fight against the Vajra. Both of them as a team will probably do this, that much I agree upon.
