Okay, I saw this in the theater and I was taken aback by how incongruous it was to the previous movies, but I chalked that up to it being 3 years since I saw 2.0, and not ever watching it subbed (I saw it in the theater too).

But I went back and watched 1.11 and 2.22 (well, the important parts), and it wasn't my faulty memory... It really is just that disconnected in so many ways...

Some things I noticed that aren't in the spoiler summaries though that "may" be important?

The picture of Yui that Fuyutsuki showed Shinji also had a women in it with glasses that looked similar to Mari.
I'm pretty sure that Asuka says in the very end that they have to get a move on "before the Lillim come"... So presumably there are now a bunch of evil lillith spawn going around killing people.
And there's a brilliant scene where Kaoru is teaching Shinji how to get good at the piano, and he tells him "You just have to keep repeating over and over again until you get a sound that satisfies you". Yeah right, Anno. Suuuure.

that Asuka was actually referring to "normal humans", as opposed to the biologically evolved Children? If repeated synchronization with the Evas leads to mutation (interruption of cellular aging, for one), then there is a chance she might view herself (and her pilot peers) as something more than human and thus uses different terms to mark the difference. In that case, this would suggest that at the end of the movie Asuka, Rei and Shinji are running away from Wille before they can be retrieved (considering how Misato was apparently willing to blow Shinji's head sky-high on the off chance he had become an Angel, despite the fact that he was her roommate for some time, it might not be such an outlandish idea after all) along with the Evas.

I know the end preview of RoE 1.0 mentioned "Lilin+" but that topic was IIRC never broached in 2.0.

And...whatever happened to Kaji anyway?

Didn’t Kaworu prevent it by personally come from the the moon to the Earth and stabbed EVA-01 with that lance (or whatever) of his? If that didn’t prevent the 3rd Impact, why would Kaworu even bother doing what he did after the end credits of Eva 2.22?

I think they refer to the 3rd Impact in the same sense as the 2nd Impact 14 years prior. It's the 3rd Impact in that had the process been completed, humanity would've been extinct. But the damage was already done - Tokyo-3 was destroyed and God knows whatever additional environmental damage to the Earth as a whole.

Sure... (saw it in the theater this weekend).

This is Evangelion as you have never seen it before, however the "heart" is basically the same. Clear your mind of any expectations now.

It's wonderfully animated and the action sequences are almost all incredible (see the first 6 minutes clip that's online for a taste)... You might be turned off by some of the new mecha designs, but even the most ludicrous thing probably has some meaning in it...

The middle of the movie does drag a bit, and unlike most evangelion there is actually only a minimal amount of large dialog sections.... The best thing AND worst thing about the movie is its ability to make you feel disoriented in the same way the characters do.

Whether this is a masterpiece or a not will entirely depend on the 4th movie, in my opinion, but it's an incredible work on par with 2.0, I think.

SPOILER FREE: Nothin' but thumbs up here. I saw it with three friends (one Puerto Rican, two Japanese) and we all thought it was really, REALLY good.

And if you haven't read the spoilers, DON'T. And DON'T LOOK AT THE IMAGES, EITHER. It may kill you to wait, but believe me, the surprises in store are totally worth it. I stayed away from any Eva discussions for the past few days while I waited to go, I knew NOTHING beyond what we saw in the trailers and the first six minutes, and I was floored by the movie.

So we went to see it at Wald 9 in Shinjuku today, which was pretty decked out for the occasion, including a giant inflatable Sahaquiel hanging from the chandelier. However, that theatre was all sold out, so we made do with Shinjuku Milano Cinema in Kabukicho.

Visually and technically, the movie was gorgeous. The CGI seemed less overtly "CG" than the previous movies, and the color was astounding. The sound was also incredible.

I'm not going to try to recount the plot (I don't feel qualified, honestly, and you can ask me anything you like, but my answer will often be, "I don't know"), so this will be more my reaction to the movie than anything else... but still, if you want to wait to have your Eva 3.0 cherry popped, DON'T READ IT!!

Spoiler for My Impressions:

Okay, are we all spoiled here? Then you know that Eva 3.0 is off in uncharted territory. The whole movie was pretty confusing for me, but the four of us sitting around looking at the movie program and discussing the film over cups of coffee definitely helped.

However, the first 45 minutes or so were baffling - deliberately so. We're thrown into a completely different world and it takes a while before we even BEGIN to get some answers. It was an exciting and audacious thing to do, and it could've fallen flat. The thing that made it good was how well the characters were done. Shinji, initially up-an'-at-'em and rarin' to fight, slowly falls into guilt and despondency as the enormity of what he's done begins to sink in. Asuka is given a lot of added depth and character in her scenes (especially when she confronts Shinji). Misato and Ritsuko are likewise well-drawn. Mari's calmed down a lot since the last movie. One of my friends, who HATED Mari in 2.0, really quite liked her here. That said, Mari still doesn't do an awful lot.

Another thing I'd like to emphasize about this movie is just how damn BLEAK it is.Yes, it starts with a big action scene. Yes, it ends with a big action scene. But most of the movie is quiet, and filled with images of ruins and massive areas devoid of people. The focus throughout is on Shinji's psychology and his attempt to continue to live in spite of the cataclysm he created. The is no comic relief in this movie, anywhere (although there are a few moments of joy, like Shinji and Kaworu practicing the piano.

The Eva designs are great. They're creepy and grotesque, and do grotesque things... just like Evas should. In fact, all the designs are great. I especially like the bridge of the "Wunder." Extended chairs with control panels dangling over a 360-degree screen.

Lastly, there's a LOT of exposition in this movie, as things are explained and dominoes are set up. I think at this point, the staff knows what they have planned for 4.0, and got all the explanations out of the way here, to clear the deck for the finale.

Oh, and the preview for "Repeat"...

Spoiler for Eva 4.0:

Has a bizarrely stitched-up-the-middle "Eva 8+2" fighting off what looks like (perhaps) a whole bunch of Eva Mark.06s.

That said, very few of the scenes in the preview for Q at the end of 2.0 ended up in this movie... so who knows?

That's what I thought as well. They wouldn't have gone off on such a wild tangent without having had 4.0 already planned out. Hopefully it means there'll be shorter wait for the next one this time around.
