My Japanese is horrible, so I may be wrong. Doesn't when Karin bite Kenta, there is a part of Karin that is transplanted to Kenta subsconciously? It was established in Book 7 when both of them reconciled and Karin did bite Kenta again the second time in Book 12?

I got a hold of the latest stuff, and I can't read a lick of Japanese (I "translate" using the furigana with an automated translator ), but-

Spoiler for Spoilers on stuff past Volume 12:

Karin seems to have been kidnapped by some other vampires and Kenta is going on a search for her with her parents.

Also, I don't really know what it's about, but something at the end of the latest chapter looked really serious, and shows Karin sleeping inside a coffin and her being surprising and crying about something.

Also, more fluff in the form of flashbacks. :3
Jeez, V12 had a hell of a lot of romance, and I'm sure when V13 is released, it'll have quite a bit as well, after looking through these chapters.

Jeez, I'm so impatient. I go off and look at pics of stuff I can't really read. XD
We're only up to Volume 6 in the US (scans ain't much farther than that), and I don't know what the hell is going on cuz' I can't read it...

I have a few scans of different chapters that are directly from the magazine Karin is printed in, though.

Man, Volume 13= serious stuff

Only thing more serious are the novels, which are... damn.
First novel Karin almost gets raped, then in the second she almost burns to death, then she gets kidnapped and/or harassed by perverted men... many, many times (I swear this happens in almost every novel volume).

It's like what someone said, the mangaka likes to make her characters suffer, only it seems this happens in the novel way more often. XD

wow really? I only have the manga and was thinking about getting the novels I hope she does not get raped.

If anyone answers, please put it in spoiler tags since most of us are reading the english release which is only up to volume 6ish.

The novel plot highlights and the darkening manga are starting to remind me of how Tsukuyomi Moon Phase the manga was much darker than the anime (which was very funny but tragically dark as well).

Its not really slow, its pretty typical (3-5 months per volume release). Karin (*cough* Chibi Vampire *cough*) was licensed only a couple of years ago and the first volume was out in April 2006.

Once its licensed, they have to translate the comics and then create the surrounding english material and ads (backpages, etc).
They work on one book at a time (usually the same staff) and they sell each volume at a speed that gives them a stable revenue stream -- that's the biggest reason.
If they dropped the books too fast on the market, they'd -
1) fill up their bookspace on the racks: bookstores allot a fixed amount of space for categories.
2) have a big spike of some sales but a lot of stuff would sit around because most readers don't just drop $200 at once.
3) 3-4 months seems to be the "happy place" as sales of the last book start to drop off after the third month.
4) Also remember that they're deciding whether to even *do* the next book. Sales of a series tend to drop off (people forget, stop reading, etc).
5) Sometimes a book takes longer because the translation and editing is tougher ... or there's some decision-making about whether to shrinkwrap that volume or not (to protect the parents from seeing nekkidness ).

Allowing for all that, most manga publishers are a bit erratic in release schedule but 3 months/book seems to be typical (unless you're ADV Manga and take a few years off).
The *hard* part is getting them to license a series for english in the first place (still waiting for Mahoraba: Heartful Days amongst many others).

Yeah, but the novel has some interesting characters.
It's mostly side-stories with a mystery element added, though, hence why there are murders or culprits of some crime in every volume of the novel.

Still, something to read if you are waiting for the next volume to come out.

I think Tokyopop did an okay job translating it too. They didn't try to make it childish or anything. All swearing is kept, no editing of the story, and no Americanization (well, some dialogue is a bit iffy, like Kenta changing between calling Karin "Maaka" and "Karin" even though they say he only says her last name, lol).

Hell, they even kept those girls calling Karin a 'disgusting slut'.

Well, she does get kidnapped as far as I know, by some other vampires. She also has bite marks on her chest when she wakes up after being kidnapped (her upper chest where her collarbone is, not her CHEST, lol), and I don't know what that means.

That one half-vampire girl seems to be involved somehow (although I thought Karin was her friend? After all, she protected her when she was getting beaten up...)


I don't really know a lot of Japanese, so I have to base off pictures and what little I can read, so I can really say more than that.

Who exactly is Sophia? (Or Sofia)
She is talking to Kenta through a connection from Karin's blood (she's that Karin Kenta keeps imagining).
I'm thinking it's one of Karin's ancestors (at least if I have that right) since she knows the vampire families and talks with extremely archaic words, which explains why I DON'T UNDERSTAND WHAT SHE IS SAYING HALF OF THE TIME. ~_~

Also, we're left hanging with Anju finding her grandfather's diary, which Elda was looking at earlier. More character development for Karin's ancestry, yay!
I liked the stories about young Calera and Elda. :3

Lastly, about what the vampires want with Karin:

They want to sacrifice her for some ritual, I think. Now I see why she was really upset back when I first saw the images.

I didn't get any new chapters from before, I just figured more things out when I sat down and tried ("tried", lol) to read them.

She's upset because she's about to die. The blood released from Karin is her life, so every time she gave people her blood, she chipped off some of her life. It seems like she will die after having her power/life given to weakened vampires. "A precious sacrifice" as that bastard says.

Well, it seems they will be sacrificing her for their own sakes, from what I can tell. They say sacrifice, but they don't mention a ritual (from what I read, which is just the ending part because I don't have the time to read the whole thing) and only say that they will treasure her until the very end of her.

The only reason that that female vampire (long, straight haired one) (I shall refrain from using a "different" word...) protected her is because she needs Maaka. They all "love" her for what she is because they need her.

I'm not discriminating against vampires (besides, none of us here are one anyways), but I do wish those bastards would all die. Hai... Like maybe call upon the anime-only hunters to vanquish them. They clearly would gladly sacrifice Karin and get rid of any hinderances (like Kenta) just for their own sakes, those selfish demons...

It isn't impossible for the next volume or two to be the finale. Kenta and Maaka family go save Karin from those demons can be the ending climax to the series.
In a way, it's possible for a good end like:
-They find a way to counter Karin's diminishing life

or Bittersweet:
-They save Karin and daily life resumes, but they know that she will eventually die

or less likely, bad end:
-Karin just dies... o_o

Don't worry, I kind of laughed too at Anju hitting Kenta. It just looks kind of funny...

I don't know anything about the invisible-to-all-but-Kenta Karin-clone, since I don't read the Japanese version thoroughly (can't bring up the effort to read 200 pages on the computer), and don't have the spare money to buy the Japanese volumes...

The vampires may wreak some havoc on Karin but then the family+Kenta save her.
However, the effect will be that Karin has a normal lifespan remaining and now there's no reason she can't spend it with Kenta. The remaining grief is for her vampire family since for them Karin will be gone in a blink of eye... whereas Karin and Kenta will have a happy life that ends "normally". Probably the biggest anguish here will be for Anju though.

I hesitate to speculate a whole lot because the author is an admitted torturer of her characters

Thanks for clarifying. No, I don't think there was anything about a ritual, I think I just assumed that. ^^;

That makes a lot more sense to me now.

That's why I was like, "TAKE THAT!" when Karin slapped that vampire girl.

Karin is really good at scaring even vampires when she gets mad. XD

I like the bittersweet one, except I'd prefer that she have a human lifespan after they somehow cure her nosebleeds or maybe she will just keep having nosebleeds and her diminishing life will result in her having a human's lifespan.

But yeah, the manga really seems like it's going to end soon, considering this is probably the first time something incredibly serious has happened in the manga (plus we already had the "daisuki" moment ).
