What's Missing From the Internet?
As far as the Internet goes, much needed websites, communities and useful tidbits are already well established. Wikipedia provides a somewhat valid encyclopedia, forum and message boards are everywhere, and social networking websites are all the rage.
However, what's missing from the Internet? What are people looking for as far as information goes? What kind of service would you like to see. Free or paid. Just a topic about websites and such for Internet engineers. |

Just stumbled in here out of curiosity
Is your question professionally related? as in a field research for finding a certain "Hole in the Market" that's a potential boost for something new thats upcoming? or did you just want to hear what diffrent people think about what they would like to see? Just my 2 cents

Nope. I'm unable to code or do something related to computers and websites. Of course, I could still open an internet business, but I was looking for discussion more on the lines of.. how should I say.. ideas and innovations?
The question arose from a conversation with a friend about how saturated the Internet is! Not just business-wise! :P I was thinking how convenient it would be if people's profiles were on one website. A more professionally built site such as Facebook, but strictly for displaying one's credentials, awards, degrees, etc. However, how would people or staff verify one's assertions about himself or herself? The population is so large, but if such a database were created, wouldn't resumes be outdated? It removes the formality and privacy though.. P.S. If it is relevant, I'm a chemist. @_@ Last edited by Yakult; 2009-07-07 at 17:25. Reason: Adding a bit more! |

It's not so much 'what is missing' but 'what could be useful.'
Myspace and many other websites existed long before FB and Twitter popped along, esp Twitter. It just took the 'status' feature of FB, linked it to mobiles and for some reason or other, grew insane. Find out what people are most likely gonna want, that's quick, easy and useful and then reinvent it a lil...

But on LinkedIn you can do much much more business related features, like look for jobs in diffrent countries ect. Theres even a whole page for asking questions, I haven't been on it a lot myself, but a friend of mine has and he says it's great for expanding your business network for if your going job hunting later in your life.

That's an easy question. The Internet needs an "Idiot Filter", a database of every single one of its users listed by IP address and narrowed by typing habits, number of typos and abbreviations per line.
A very handy USB-powered Boxing glove should also be installed on top of every monitor and fired when deemed necessary by the community.

By today's standards, this is like a billion dollar question. If anyone has the real answer and can implement it --> the internet responds --> success! All of the recent successes have all been about user-generated content and connectivity. Since that front is almost saturated, unless there's a fundamental hole in their models, it seems like the only sure way to go is to up the technology.
I've noticed though that at the moment there doesn't seem to be any dominant online educational software packages. For many of the courses that I've taken, profs just direct us to use the software by the publisher of the book. There are ones that have been developed through post-secondary institutions, such as LON-CAPA by Michigan State University, but it doesn't have the same overall package and complexity compared to the commercial offerings. Well, I'm not absolutely sure on this, so does anyone know of any e-learning platform that can cover anything between arts and science that's highly configurable? Then again, could it be that there's some trade regulations here that's preventing anyone from monopolizing the market?

Well, the Internet relies on global corporations to function. Not much of it can be called state property at all...it's not like infrastructure. I'm not talking about the data accessible through the internet, that users might lay claim to, but rather the cables, routers, protocols, and so on. The data here is useless without the connectivity after all.
the Internet may be at it's best at this very moment, but we don't have any rights to using it except contracts with our ISPs where they hold all the strings. Besides that ISP owns less than a per mille of the hardware we're connecting through, anyway. What I'd like is more power to the people so that we can protect the way things work now. Reassurance that I can keep using the Internet the way I am now for the rest of my life. I'm probably asking for the impossible but that's the only thing I feel is missing :P |

I think Twitter proves that nobody knows what will really happen next on the Internet. Just come up with some software that scratches your personal itch and you could become a millionare.
