I remembering happening upon the announcement for the V/N last summer or so. I thought the character designs looked bland, and the premise sounded pretty lacking (school + robot club). And I felt the same way about the anime (trailers, promotional images, and etc.), that is to say, I didn't care about it at all. It felt uninspired. But then, someone I know told me that it's worth a watch.

Much to my surprise, I ended up liking the first two episodes, and later the third one, quite a bit. Maybe it'd even be fair to say that I loved them.

At first, I couldn't put my finger on precisely why I was enjoying the show so much, I can now:

1) I love the chemistry between Kai and Aki. As another poster pointed out, nothing about their relationship seems forced, and they complement each other very well. I'm hoping for some romance between the two.

2) I'm more of a fan of "robots" than "mecha", if that makes sense. As much as I love giant bipedal humanoid mechs that are equipped with the deadliest of weapons, toy robots that one can build, modify, and battle with will always hold a special place in my heart, no matter what the scale. A mixture of both these thing would be pretty awesome, too.

3) The OP, and to a lesser extent, the ED. The former gives me some S;G vibes, and that's mainly due to the lyrics of the song, while the former is just sounds awesome.

4) The character designs, which looked oh-so-lame at first, were brought to by the characters' personalities. I find male deadpan characters easy enough to relate to, and I like how Kaito tells everyone that he'll do as they wish if they manage to beat him in a game of KB. And Aki is just lovely; she's lively, optimistic, and her hair style is awesome.

All in all, this anime turned out to be quite a surprise for me, and as a result, I enjoyed the first three episodes quite a lot, and I hope that this will continue to be the case for the rest of the series.

Given her personality, yes but Kai would be too deadpan.

LOL. I liked Kai's plan B. Blackmail the robot "know-it-all" to save your club.

With this, we can now start the building of the giant robot.

I'm not exactly a fan of Kai. His "don't wanna do anything" attitude just comes off as really negative, even though it's clear he does care about Aki. That said, there seems to be a little hint at a story behind that from this episode, so I look forward to seeing what will happen.

Hell, it's no Steins;Gate, but I'm liking it so far.

This distinction that you made between the two is interesting. Personally, my definition of a "robot" is more similar to the Asimov type, i.e. equipped with AI and carries with it the usual sort of social/metaphysical implications. It differs from your definition, and both concepts differ from the "mecha" idea, but they all fall under the umbrella of "robotics". It's interesting how many directions this premise can go (even if R;N very likely won't deal with any AI ;_; ).

Like the same otaku stubbornness that pretends Robotech wasn't a hugely impressionable piece of media for getting western anime fans into anime.

And, yes, we are now officially veering way off topic.
It has many references to Gundams btw. So I do think you can use it... But not too far... How about giving you a dose of Quattro Bajeena and Char reference?

And a question remains, when can I see a 1/1 size Gundam in Robotics; Notes?

All it just need, is a reference to the famous Waverider crash.

Gundam isn't usually meant to be cool so much as be like, "hey this is your favorite character right? Well guess what.....now they're dead, how's that for you?"

People think it was Madoka that invented the soul crushingly bitter and hopeless atmosphere in anime, but really it was kind of Gundam that did it so yeah Gundam isn't really all that "cool" and "fun" per se like this is so far, although some of the mecha designs and battles have been a treat to watch throughout the years.

Finally got around to watch the latest ep. Good job to Kai, though...did he really blackmail someone, in front of the vice principal?

I was wondering why people were saying a ginga bishouen appeared in this ep. At first I didn't see why, since all I saw was a Char mask + earth fed symbol with a zeon outfit with a dash of FABULOUS. Kai's lucky, it's a good thing Subaru's robot wasn't red.
Don't know what to think of Subaru, poor guy being told he's a ginga bishouen. That would suck.

Well glad the tournament is over, onwards to build Gunvarrel! I hope Akiho continues to shout out attack names even when they use a completely built Gunvarrel, she's definitely got the spirit to do it right.

I didn't know people actually thought that. That's almost somewhat concerning.
Oh well...different topic for another time.

there will always be newcomers whose first "serious depressing" anime is madoka. Nothing we can do about it really :P

so glad to see this series picks up.

EP 3 reminded me of Angelic Layer for some reason. The story seems to develop now, I'm interested.

The OP already suggested she was a slob, but I didn't know she's also into "that".
Should I expect KaitoxSubaru undertones in the future?

the hobby robo tournament somehow reminds me of srw with the players being monitored for possible pilots for their big robos.
