Bad animation when it comes to the humans, awesome animation when it comes to the action scenes and mechs.

The last 5 minutes of this episode was very epic, I watched it twice

Exactly what I'm here for as well The music and the space combat just won it for me.

Valvrave seems to be 13 episodes but 2 cours which would make it a split cour series with the second half airing in Fall, not exactly confirmed yet but looking like it.

This otoh is indeed 24 episodes long.

Count me in among those who liked this first episode. I pretty much share the same sentiments as duckroll, probably also amplified by the fact that I didn't really read much info about this show (which sort of went a bit too much under the radar), and it turned out to be a pleasant surprise.

Of course, it wasn't flawless but it was a solid first episode that pretty much established the characters and the series' mood. I am in real need of a decent mecha show after the huge disappointment that E7AO was.

I wish the pacing was slower, we went from team fail to team destroying thousands of grunts in a single episode. I would not have minded to see more team fail it looked rather amusing. Still the fights were impressive definitely hope this will end being a good mecha series, with the exception of Gundam Unicorn there hasn't been a good one in a while.

Also am I the only one that thinks a five man team consisting of three guys and two girls is refreshing? That really says a lot about today's anime.

I completely agree with you.

Before the series started, I only intended to watch this series only for the mecha and mecha battled scenes. It looks like I will be doing just that. XD

Interesting series. The Mecha designs are quite interesting, I think I like Red-5 the best. Between this and Date-A-Live what is it with commanders with lollipops?

I finally got bored enough to give the first episode a watch. On the plus side the alien mecha seem unique with a simian-like feel to them and neon art style, the action is well done, and the earth mecha are not too shabby. On the other hand the music is bland and pinkie is probably going to be annoying as hell with everyone else not being interesting. Typical first episodes tend to be typical. The noses are also done very weirdly.

Haven't watched mecha series since Gundam Seed Destiny (which was the turn off) but when I saw the PV for this, I knew I had to give it a go.

1st ep is just hilarious! It's like watching a parody of Gundam Seed. I like it so far...

I liked it, not nearly as bad as I thought I'd be. I'll give it at least 12 EPs I suppose.

Why do I have a feeling this isn't an invasion but an alien safari?

Episode 2

The bit in the beginning where Lt Amane laments the lack of proper childhood those MJP pilots had gave me huge Gundam vibes which I guess is hardly unsurprising, but I wonder if it's also going to be a strong theme in this show. We also seem to be getting some other Gundam tropes including a Char clone (though I really hope that wasn't a Lacus Clyne clone I saw. We don't need one of them). Incidentally, the sponsor logos all over their mechs gave me Tiger & Bunny vibes, so maybe they're taking all sorts of concepts from their previous shows and mashing them up.

The press conference was hilarious. Especially the comments that came up when Yoko said she was accepting applications. The comedy isn't always great but it can make some pretty funny stuff. And as expected they also know how to create some pretty tense actions scenes too.

So by the look of the in-series reactions to the characters it seems like this will have a similar take to Zambot 3's "we don't like the heroes" public point of view. The sponsoring was silly and the action.... I have to admit it was not that interesting. Blue, Red, and Purple still aren't much of anything although I will say Goldie might end up being a decent character even for his nerdiness. I also really did not like the opening and ending themes. Next week I will have to brace myself for fanservice junk, oh boy.

I think the problem I'm having with this show is that it feels like we're already at the episodic silly high jinks phase of a two cours series, which tends to kick after the introduction phase (around episode four-five) and the fanservice episode next week seems to confirm this.
This doesn't really work if you don't know the characters.

The mecha CGI fights continue to be excellent though.
