The headline can be misleading as this is not the first time this has been done by any decade-long stretch of the imagination. They've made it better and can now do it with precision as opposed to most previous methods being random deposition techniques that were largely hit or miss (largely miss, and very costly). That said, I'd be curious to see a follow up on this and how well parallel set-ups of these adatoms will work in practice to carry a signal. Its great that they made one and they can take that to the bank and make hundreds of thousands of them, but I'm more curious in their functionality and whether or not the separation between them is important and if it is (I don't see why it wouldn't be, since these atoms will begin to influence each other as you bring them close) how important is it (or how sensitive are these transistors to their neighbors)?

As for quantum computing... this may help solve the problem of scalability (assuming we don't see issues from the above concern though I'd imagine it would likely be controllable with extensive cooling) but the largest hurdle for a *good* quantum computer remains in the issues of decoherence and the ability for gate logic to be resolved before the decoherence time runs out. Plants can do it, I'm sure we'll figure it out one day too.

OPERA reports two possible errors with their measurement that could take the neutrino results in two different directions.

Now, this might not be the exact best place for my question but given what's going on with OPERA, I have a question. This is a fiber-optics issues as far as I'm aware (from what little detail there is at the moment) but all reports say that *tightening* the cable yields 60 ns of lost time (or the time by which the neutrinos exceed the speed of light) but my gut is looking at that number and saying: "That's 18 meters!" How loose was this cable? Because 18 meters is a helluva distance for something to be considered "loose" and my personal experience with fiber optics usually falls on the picosecond scales where adjustments become a real pain in the rear.

Or am I forgetting something in my midnight stupor for which I will be embarrassed come tomorrow since I work with optics (woo! AMO) on a regular basis.

(I can understand if the cable were bent or the connector were bent such that the light reflected internally a bunch of times, but just a loose cable is confusing me.)

It would amuse me if the found they were it error...but in the other direction. That the neutrinos were even faster than they calculated.

Nokia unveils a 41 megapixel phone at MWC.

Well that's a bit misleading. The camera sensor is 41MP, but the best feature of it is the oversampling that produces an incredibly nice 3/5/8 MP picture, with noise effectively eliminated. You can make super high MP pictures as output, but it would look rather crappy.

The downside is that it is a Symbian phone. But Nokia is certainly going to port it to Windows in the future.

Well Huawei has got a monopoly here for the mobile USB modems, practically every telecom company has or is using Huawei tech. The running gag is that China siphoned foreign technology through Singapore and paid the government for it; Huawei is one of the companies that easily penetrated into the Singapore market due to money and opportunity favours in exchange for unsupervised technology espionage.

I am not a huge fan of them - they blatantly copied stuff from Cisco routers in the early 2000s and there are rumours of them selling those at the time at the local PC Shows.

Of course, there is this yesterday :

The lawsuit is not going to go through I bet.
