Spring:

Ao no Exorcist v1 does 7,318/10,892 for 18,210 first week. Fuck yes, it did even better than I was anticipating. Over 20k total in its lifetime run is assured. Decent ratings, dramatically improved book sales, near 20k in disc sales...looks like Nichigo is back on track after Basara and Takuto's somewhat disappointing performances.

Steins;Gate v1 does 11,802 BDs and DVDs don't rank. Very otaku heavy show. I was expecting this to do at least 16k, but I guess everyone who bought this ordered it from Amazon which skewed the points on Stalker. Oh well, I'm hoping that it at least does over 15k for the lifetime. Even if it doesn't, these are still great numbers.

Yondemasu yo, Azazel-san v1 does 5,649/2,592 for 8,241 total. Great success, definitely the Ika Musume of this season. Could do over 10k for the lifetime.

Denpa Onna to Seishun Otoko v1 does 5,267/1,361 for 6,628 total. Exactly what I expected it to do. Should reach high 7k-low 8k for the lifetime. Glad this didn't end up being another SHAFT flop. We'll definitely be seeing a second season of this to adapt the last 3 novels at some point.

Hidan no Aria v1 does 4,007/2,349 for 6,356. Far more than anyone on 2ch expected a week ago. I thought it would do slightly better than Nichijou with maybe 2.5k BDs and 1-1.5k DVDs for at the most a 4k opening week, but it blew right past those predictions. Might pass 7k over the lifetime. Aria's novel sales increased a bit too. So, this means the MF Bunko x TBS project is still a success, although not on the same level that IS was (they probably won't reproduce that until Haganai is animated in the fall).

Sket Dance v1 does 6,891 DVDs. Doesn't mean much, since the volume was dirt cheap at $12.

Sekai-ichi Hatsukoi v1 does 4,574 DVDs. About what I expected from glancing over its points on Stalker, although I don't watch the show.

Nichijou v1 does 2,620/924 for 3,544. Hope this teaches Kyoani that their shows need a specific hook to be successful, and can't just be mindless moe with reaction faces (although I do enjoy Nichijou).

Ore-tachi ni wa Tsubasa wa nai v1 does 1,025 BDs. DVDs don't rank.

Tiger & Bunny v2 does 22,685/1,071 for 23,756 total. It obviously doesn't have as much of a distro problem as v1 had, since it's already at its current total. That said, it's still probably effected by distro problems a bit since people who placed their orders after 6/15 will get their copies shipped later.

A-Channel v2 does 3,697/1,312 for 5,009.

Winter:

Madoka Magica v3 does 51,840/8,528 for 60,368. Still very consistent with v1 and v2's first weeks, although obviously it's a bigger drop than v2 had from v1. This is probably the lowest we'll see from Madoka, since v5 and v6 should out-sale v3 and v2 thanks to Homu and the finale. The first two volumes' BDs also ranked this week (as usual) adding 1,000 each to their totals making v1 76,189 and v2 70,181.

Infinite Stratos v3 does 22,197/7,758 for 29,955. Still incredibly consistent from v1.

Starry Sky v5 does 2,855 DVDs.

Kore wa Zombie desu ka? v4 does 1,947/912 for 2,859.

GOSICK v3 does 1,842 BDs. DVDs don't rank.

Fall:

Super Robot Taisen OG: The Inspector v1 does 921 DVDs. Blu-rays come with game pack.

Oreimo v7 does 16,731/4,108 for 20,839 total. A decent bump of near 1.5k from v6's first week thanks to the net episodes.

Index II v5 does 11,590/4,132 for 15,722. The Index-tan 4 episode keeps it from falling lower than v4, but subsequent volumes should be below 11k in BDs and below 4k in DVDs for their first weeks.

Star Driver v6 does 4,892/2,283 for 7,175. Which puts the average sales across volumes below 10k. First for a Nichigo show, and not a good one. Oh well, AoEx has somewhat revived the slot.

Milky Holmes v6 3,899/963 for 4,862 total for the first week of the final volume. The BDs should rank one more time next week to put it over 5,000.

Tegami Bachi Reverse v7 does 1,302.

Movies/OVAs/Box Sets:

BLACK LAGOON: Roberta's Blood Trail v5 and final volume does 4,826/1,340 for 6,187 total the first week. A sizable bump from v4.

Natsume Yuujinchou BD Box Set does 6,511. Very good for a BD box set.

Sora no Otoshimo BD Box Set does 3,218. Not bad.

Shakugan no Shana BD Box Set does 1,269. This is...very concerning to me. I was hoping it would sale close to Natsume's numbers. From disc sales to novel sales, the series has waned in popularity a lot since 2008.

Arrietty does 9,463/48,766 in its second week for a total of 222,261. Really need to get around to watching.

I'm a bit surprised not to see Moshidora on this list given that the original source was a best-selling novel. CDJapan lists the first printing of the Volume 1 DVD as sold out, too. The Blu-ray version is not, however.

The fact that the DVDs are sold out, but the BDs are not, suggests this isn't an otaku-oriented item, I guess. Maybe that's why it's anime sales figures seem unrelated to the book's sales of nearly two million copies.

As I said a while back in the series thread, I was expecting about 15k for Ao no Exorcist but not as much as 18k - a very pleasant surprise. I reckon this is indeed as much of a FMA-like success as the producers could have hoped to achieve on Doroku, and in the current market climate. The consequent bump in manga sales is even more reassuring.

And as expected, the DVDs sold better than the BDs, which is fairly rare these days - I assume two factors come into play here. 1. As SeijiSensei mentioned, appeal to people other than otaku. 2. Fujoshi don't care for Blu-Rays.

Quick comments on the other series:
- I was expecting better for Steins;Gate, I have to admit. I knew the Amazon Stalker numbers weren't much of an indication since the pre-broadcast hype was pretty ridiculous and quickly died down, but still, 20k seemed plausible...
- I'm actually sad Nichijou is bombing that hard. I don't know, I feel much more sympathy for it than anything KyoAni has put out lately, but otaku clearly don't feel the same. Of course Kadokawa's partly to blame as well.
- Sekaiichi deserved to do better than Junjou Romantica. :/ I'm not sure these numbers will allow for a second season.
- I wonder if Deadman Wonderland even sold 500 copies www - I love the manga but this, on the other hand, is something I want to see bombing, which is pretty sad...

I'm obviously curious for AnoHana now.

I read somewhere Sekaiichi's sales have the best selling Kadokawa shows of the year(first week debut). Is that right? So that would mean a second season is likely....

I guess I'm just pissed off at the final episode. It didn't even seem like an ending. A second season must be made.

As much as I disliked KyoAni doing Nichijou when they still have loads of Haruhi left to adapt, even I have to feel sorry for them over this level of sales bombing.

Nichijou's numbers are bad even for an anime made by an average anime studio, but by KyoAni's lofty standards, they're abysmal.

The one silver lining here is that maybe it'll force KyoAni to do more Haruhi ASAP, in order to make some safe cash after this...

lol, Nichijou. Oh sure, Mai has some potential, but putting absolutely no effort at having a cohesive narrative (yes, even a comedy as such needs one. Lucky star had one!) and just splicing stuff together was too much even for the otaku and fanboys to accept.

This is just as bad as the Lakers vs the Mavericks in this years' NBA playoffs. KyoAni went out like bitches.

Mediocre effort in a season of great animes, KyoAni surely deserved this. I'm glad they're getting burned so hard here, they need a wake up call.

As much as I enjoy the series, and I feel like hitting someone while they're down by saying this but KyoAni reaped what they've sown.

The show clearly has a problem, which is sacrificing the comedy for the sake of the animation. I love how the series looks and sounds, but god damn it doesn't do much as a comedy.

Nichijou is no Azumanga Daioh. That all being said, I never imagined it would do this badly (it's a bit disheartening for someone who liked Nichijou) and even if the BD do get about 1-2k (it's not going be above 4k, that's for certain) this is still an embarrassing figure for the studio.

Also, much thanks to Suzuku for the translation (and for anyone curious, the past figures had been constantly updated by eggplant on his post here

one thing though

Sket Dance キタ━━━(゜∀゜)━━━!!!!! This warms my heart so much to see it so up high. The anime had been really fun, and it's great to see it getting ranked here

Well, at least it means it's actually doing well for once on all fronts. I guess the solution had always been to go back to what made the first slot successful. Good ol' Shonen Action(?) Adaption.

Considering the budget they put into it + the amount of care into the character designs, I never imagined it would flop like typical Shaft flops.

I'm surprised that it's done as well as it did, since the anime had been very bad looking and generally I heard that Novel readers weren't happy with it.

I only hope that JCStaff fixed the animation a bit.

Well, I think many are fairly annoyed by how much the show for a surrealist comedy, it's certainly skimping on the comedy a lot. I like the show, but yeah, I sort of expected that it's not going to be a hit, or see much love.

On the plus side, it still sold more than Fractale! And hey, this just means it will be dirt cheap when it gets licensed for English.

lol. Is it bad that I want the show to fail so that Kaminomi still remains Manglobes best selling title? Well, until the Hayate movie anyway ...

It's most likely going to sell in the 20k-40k range most likely. I imagine it would end up being among the best selling title of the year.

If they can still afford to do much for a while after this. They might need to find some capital from somewhere fast. As far as I know their funding reserves aren't exactly all that great. Until today I thought Japan was incapable of not showing up for a Kyoani Blu-Ray/DVD. I mean even Endless Eight managed to crack 15,000 so I figured that they were basically on easy mode as far as competition in the anime industry goes and basically just had to put anything out with their stamp on it to be guaranteed a healthy profit. Guess it really does depend on what franchise it is at the very least and Nichijou is definitely not in the money.

Going to be interesting how Kyoani responds to failure. Until now it's really never happened to them even though I'd argue it probably should have in a number of cases. Can't say I really feel sorry for them at all though. If you ask me this is just a situation righting itself at long last. You can't keep doing lightweight meandering all female cast moe show after lightweight meandering all female cast moe show after lightweight meandering all female cast moe show and expect it to go well the....what....3rd time in a row? You keep putting all your eggs in one basket and sooner or later you're going to get burned because people are going to get bored of the same old same old.

Why is there no #11, 12, 13, or 19 on the BD list?

It'll be interesting to see what numbers AnoHana and Hana-Saku Iroha will pull when they get released. AnoHana looks to be huge and Hana-Saku strikes me as a bit of a wildcard.

Back when Nichijou started airing I considered why Lucky Star and K-On! were popular and came to the conclusion that Nichijou would not be replicating that success. In my analysis, Lucky Star and K-On!'s success (not to mention that of Haruhi) was due to the fact that the shows and their characters became otaku icons - people bought them as a way of demonstrating otaku pride. Outside of its studio pedigree, Nichijou never really had that sort of iconic value - nothing comparable to K-On!'s Don't Say Lazy and the associated video, for example.

That said, sales were lower than I expected... there's plenty of non-KyoAni moe slice of lifes in the 6-10K sales range, including this season's A Channel (which has episodes that feel more K-On! like than any other anime I can think of). I retrospect, I should have seen it coming given that A Channel was consistently outranking Nichijou on Amazon.

Well, arguably this will just make them stick to adapting more things in the lieu of school life comedies/already established franchises rather than branch into the surrealist comedies anymore, since that appears to be a bust for them.

I don't think they are going to have problems with trying to get more funding for their typical projects, since once the K-On!(how many exclamation marks is it now?) movie comes out, they are going to make a ton of money again. It's the more unconventional projects that they never/don't usually do that are going to take the hit.

Anohana, much like Eden of the East, has the advantage of cross-demographic appeal, so it should do splendidly. Hanasuka I'm guessing will do well enough, though we shall see how much the visuals will be able to attract people.

Outside of its studio pedigree, Nichijou never really had that sort of iconic value - nothing comparable to K-On!'s Don't Say Lazy and the associated video, for example.
I sort of agree that what made the previous such success is the marketability of aspects of the show (the characters mostly) but I can't say that Nichijou didn't have any. That's simply not true, it could have been marketed to the same crowed, had that been the intention, but the show is more designed to appeal to the visual aspect rather than the comedy or the characters themselves. So it's more of a case of misplaced priorities more than a lack of hooks.

I retrospect, I should have seen it coming given that A Channel was consistently outranking Nichijou on Amazon.
I don't think anyone expected it do this bad it's really a shame, but it was expected, since the show never did manage to score a chord with any crowed, either because they were pushed away by the sketch like nature of the show, the discrepancy between each segments or just how inconstant it was in general.

Then again, maybe it would've managed to do more decently in a less crowded season, since this Spring was just too strong in all regards.

Likewise; Just as expected. I mean, sure it's has beautiful designs, funny narrative, as well as some of the most moe girls ever- but in the end it just doesn't shake the house like a 10k show.

Aria's novel sales increased a bit too. So, this means the MF Bunko x TBS project is still a success, although not on the same level that IS was (they probably won't reproduce that until Haganai is animated in the fall).
This one was the real surprise, in a good way. I mean I was all ready to accept that it's going to only be 1 season, then BAM! 6k sales rekindle the flames of hope

Just hope it it can hold on for the next... Five(?) volumes as well

Really? The Index II sales has been very stable for the last four volumes after V1, I don't think it would start to drop now, not when it's entering 'that' arc.

That's... A very big drop for Star Driver isn't it? It used to be around 9-12k right?

It was right on the borderline of droping below the 11k line with vol 4 where it sold 11,192 copies the first week. Index-tan 4 brought it back up for this volume, but regular sale patterns should be back with vol 6 and it will probably drop below 11k for the first week. The contents of an arc don't usually effect how well the vol sale or stop their decline in sales over previous volumes.

Only for the first volume. The first vol reached 15,500 copies, but vol 2 saw a big drop off with it only reaching 10k before it stopped ranking. With Nichigo shows, which SD is one, a lot of non-otaku buy the first volume for novelty purposes, so subsequent volumes usually see huge drop offs. Just look at FMA: B, Gundam 00, and CG. The same drop off will probably happen with AoEx as well.

Hmmm, well I'm not too bothered as long as the total still amounts to 15k after the first week, and crawls to 16k by the end.

Most of the series that I would want another season are selling good.

Index II selling almost 20k per vol will definitely get us another season, though this was obvious.

Ore no Imouto is selling great with more than 20k per vol, but it's a shame we won't get another season judging from the ending.

IS is selling more than 30k so it's possible that there will be another season.

Madoka Magica is selling crazy with more than 60k per vol, but too bad there won't be another season (unless it's gonna be about Homura).

Ao no Exorcist may end up selling more than 20k per vol and this is a good reason for another season. But if there's gonna be another season we probably gonna have to wait at least 2 years cause the anime is catching up to the manga fast.

Denpa Onna had sold more than 6k and could sell up to 10k. They may as well make another season cause another 12 episodes should finish the whole story.

Hidan no Aria had also sold more than 6k and could sell up to 10k. This is expected from a JC Staff series that features Rie Kugimiya tsundere, which always ends up being one of the studio's most successful series. If this continues for the next volumes there should be another season.

^ A second season of IS isn't going to be a case of "it's possible", there will be a second season of IS period, end of discussion. At the rate it's going it will be the 13th best selling show since 2000.... worst case scenario it will be the 15th...

OreNo will get a second season..., Index will get a third, just probably after Railgun gets a second.. at least this time JC Staff might give it a decent budget since the sales improved so much... Ao No Exorcist is going to be back in a couple years..., Denpa Onna should definitely get a sequel going by SHAFTs prior history, if they can put out a Maria Holic sequel....

Hidan will not sell 10k, majority of anime sell the majority of their sales in the first week and have a drop off after the first volume, something like Infinite Stratos being incredibly consistent is the exception. Opening weeks of 29368, 30245, 29955 speaks for itself.... look @ Star Driver as a good example.. started around 12k with Vol 1 IIRC and has now fallen down to 7k with Vol 6. Anyway back to Hidan, it will probably sell enough to get a sequel down the track.. with even less budget than the first one...

You serious man? You do know what the manabi line is don't you?

Kyoto Animation
43064 ** K-ON!
41038 *8 Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuuutsu
39385 *6 K-ON!!
29146 12 Lucky☆Star
24808 *8 CLANNAD
24346 *6 AIR
19052 *8 Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuuutsu ("New Animation")
19884 *8 CLANNAD AFTER STORY
17253 *8 Kanon 2006
14641 *3 Suzumiya Haruhi-chan to Nyoron☆Churuya-san
*8917 *6 Full Metal Panic? Fumoffu
*4833 *7 Full Metal Panic! The Second Raid
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
***** *5 Sora wo Miageru Shoujo no Hitomi ni Utsuru Sekai (Munto TV)

Everything they've done is above the manabi line except for Munto, and considering most of Munto was the two old OVAs reused that one isn't as a bad a loss as it would appear to be.

They have a K-ON! movie in the works which will probably sell as much as the 00 Gundam Movie.... Also here's a list of TV Sets released as Bluray Boxsets.

¥1356.6m (34,000 * ¥39,900) - Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuuutsu
¥*456.7m (12,427 * ¥36,750) - Strike Witches (7,011 + 5,416)
¥*356.6m (*9,703 * ¥36,750) - Darker than Black
¥*322.6m (*5,155 * ¥62,580) - Clannad After Story
¥*310.4m (*4,960 * ¥62,580) - Clannad

¥*228.4m (*6,214 * ¥36,750) - Eureka Seven

Now as for Nichijou itself the dvds did 924 but the Bluray failed to rank in the top 30, #30 was Aria which did 4000.... so it's possible Nichijou sold 3.5k BD and ended up doing 4.5k for first week... Is that a flop? Well going by KyoAni's lofty standards than of course it is, but it's still making a profit.

Now I'm not a fan of Nichijou and I'm personally disappointed in the direction that Kyoto Animation have gone in... but anyone acting like this is going to hurt them is out of their mind. Out of 13 projects they've had 12 of them been profitable, 10 of them in the "hit" range. They're going to make more money off the K-ON! Movie than 90% of studios will make this year... Movie tickets, merchandise, cd singles, ost, bluray release..

Don't worry about KyoAni... they'll be fine, worry more about them no longer branching out from their usual crap after Nichijou (a small deviation) flopped by their standards... oh KyoAni, when it comes to potential you truly are the Vince Carter of the anime world.
