Fugou Keiji: Balance:UNLIMITED

Quote:
A trailer for the newly announced anime from CloverWorks, titled “Fugou Keiji Balance:UNLIMITED”, has been released. It will premiere on Fuji TV’s Noitamina block in April 2020.
Premise
Quote:
The story follows the incredibly wealthy Daisuke Kanbe who audaciously solves cases in unconventional ways. Whereas Tsutsui serialized the original novel from 1975 to 1977, the anime moves the setting into the modern day. Kanbe is assigned to the "Modern Crimes Task Unit" — a unit created to keep problematic officers away from others. There, Kanbe becomes partners with Katō.

Here's official trailer #2.

I've heard positive sentiments on the novel (there's one on MAL) and the staff involved. Also, detective stories are right up my alley. Sign me the fuck up.

Though I don't think we'll see her again, I'm not sure what to think of Yoko. Lots of guts, little brains, terrible taste in men.

I'm not sure what to think of the premise either. What works in Hayate no Gotoku or Ouran Host Club may not work in a buddy cop show.

The rich guy's voice is a little weird, but the character's cool. What kind of dumbass mom tries to cross the street with her kid to get away from a runaway car?

So did the robbery duo getaway? If so, I'm very confused as to how.

The first episode just came out, I haven't even watched the show yet, and "Daisuke" is already trending on US twitter.

They definitely modernized this a lot. As a result, it felt like Tony Stark playing cops instead of fighting with armors.

It didn't feel very different from all the buddy cop shows out there, anime or otherwise. The stand-out scene was Daisuke looking down at the cop and watching him fall instead of helping him.

What happens when a guy with infinite justice meets a guy with infinite money?

Anyway, chemistry's already negative between them. Daisuke just uses his money to do what he wants, while our "dropout cop" Kato has a tendency to overstep boundaries to save others. But, we have yet to see how their team-up develops, as well as their respective circumstances. The intro implies that Daisuke was bored of his millionaire lifestyle, while Kato was still being "haunted" by being kicked out of the First Division of the MPD.

How the heck would these two work together? Let's find out.

BTW, the OP really sounded like a K-Pop song.

Daisuke is basically Batman/Iron Man if they foregoed the Superhero costume and secrecy and just straight up joined the police with the modus operandi of "money solves everything." I'm kind of curious about what the inciting incident is that led him to want to join the police. I wonder if it involved one of the women in the Opening .

The long-haired Maaya Sakamoto character looks to be Daisuke's Femme Fatale/Bond Girl equivalent going by the Opening. One minute she's shown with a knife, the next she's on the sofa affectionately cradling Daisuke's neck. Not the first time Maaya Sakamoto has played a character getting close with the main detective in the Opening. And if you weren't sure she's a looker, the Opening helpfully displays her in her underwear to boot .

What's the difference between "Modern Crimes" and the "First Division?" Is the former just for less serious police work while the First Division is the "real" police? It definitely doesn't seem like the Modern Crimes division is taken that seriously given they basically live in a basement and Kato was seemingly put there as a demotion. I'm guessing Daisuke chose to work there for more freedom and the chance to build the division up through his own efforts .

Kato is the kind of police officer dedicated to his job and to justice, even if it also means he doesn't care for playing politics which puts him at odds with the brass. It's kind of fun watching Mamoru Miyano play the straight man of a duo for once .

Yoko and Hiroshi are probably the dumbest"Bonnie and Clyde" duo I've ever seen. Hiroshi's so wishy-washy and when they finally decide to rob a place it's a chocolate shop of all things. Then their getaway car has a bomb on it. Although, with all that said, it seems that miraculously they not only survived but somehow managed to not get caught. So as dumb as they are, it seems they are also extremely lucky .

(Y'know, if Daisuke hadn't diverted all the police away from the scene, they probably would have caught them. But I guess he was more concerned about the bomb then the small scale crooks ).

I kinda feel bad for Yoko being stuck together with such a good for nothing man like Hiroshi. Not only is he kind of pathetic, but he took money from a syndicate to cheat on her with. And then he basically abandons her to die. She showed more loyalty and dedication to him by being willing to go through all this and become a criminal for then he ever did to her, and it seems like she's still going to stay with him at the end. I know there's something to be said for loving someone despite their faults, or how you can't help it when you love someone, but in this instance I'd think 99% of people would agree with kicking Hiroshi to the curb .

Wow, dang, Daisuke seemed to enjoy watching Kato drop into the river. Not even Doug from Double Decker was that much of a tool .

So I guess we'll see what the partnership of a straight-laced, "for justice," type and a callous, but efficient, "throw money at everything" type will bring. Will Kato be able to instill in Daisuke a true sense of justice or that money doesn't solve everything? Will Daisuke leave all the menial and difficult police work to Kato, as indicated in the Ending? One thing's for sure, this is definitely a Buddy Cop anime .

I guess there were no police in the vicinity to arrest them. The only one who would actually care to, Kato, was splashing down into the river.

(I mean, realistically you'd think the police would have a cordon and their description out there to catch them...)

I loved this! Second favorite premiere of the season after BNA.

I love characters like Daisuke. such a spoiled brat and yet, he's entirely competent and makes it look awesome.
I love his little Jarvis butler, and how he's so at odds with Kato.

Kato's going to take more time to like since he was more annoying to me with his straightlaced justice attitude. But the two should play off each other well.
Both men seem to be loners, but for different reasons. Daisuke has money but not really ties to anyone. Kato's so intense about his job, that it seems to have robbed him of relationships with others.

The OP and the ED were great. I loved them both. Favorite of the season so far.

The two robbers were just silly but I felt really sorry for Yoko who kept getting pulled in by her spineless good-for-nothing boyfriend.

I look forward to more shenanigans next week.

Considering the research that Kato was doing, I'm guessing the Modern Crimes department is more of the Cold Case investigation group. It's common in stories to send "demoted" police officers there and they are also often located in the basement away from everyone else in most series.

They don't take it seriously since most of the cases they have, they investigate in their leisure and will probably never get solved. It will be interesting to see Daisuke make some headway there, since for most of the people in the department, it seems to be a dead end.

I kind of feel like we'll end up seeing them both again considering they apparently weren't apprehended, had so much focus in the first episode, and there's still the issue of Hiroshi's debts...

I was going to ask if the old man was him, there was something about him that felt out of place.

You know, they translate the title to being "The Millionaire Detective", but considering how much he just throws around, I think the term "millionaire" is a vast understatement.

I heard it can be translated as "wealthy", should have gone with that. He casually spent more than 10 million in this episode alone
