SK8 the Infinity

New Bones show announced as SK8 the Infinity. Coming next year in January (Winter 2021)

Quote:
Reki, a high school sophomore and skater, is addicted to “S,” a highly secret and dangerous downhill skateboarding race that takes place in an abandoned mine. The skaters are especially wild about the “beefs,” or heated battles that erupt in the races.

Reki takes Langa, a transfer student returning to Japan after studying abroad, to the mine where the races are held. Langa, who has no skateboarding experience, finds himself pulled into the world of “S”...

To those interested, the meaning behind the title of the series, as shown in the video:

S - Skate (skating)
K - kimi to (with you)

Great first episode!

Main character Reki is an amateur skater involved in some sort of midnight underground skate racing scene with wagers of all kinds. Langa is this new transfer student (half CAN, half JPN) who has a snowboard background. Langa can't skate, or can he?!

This show resonates with me less because of the skater scene or the midnight underground drifting (thanks Initial D), but because years ago I got a longboard to practice summer time snowboarding. Yeah, not exactly the same, but similar, and being on a board is a lot of fun when you follow safety guidelines and wear protective gear.

Though the show doesn't really advocate safety as it's for entertainment purposes, if this show inspires you to try skating, almost ALWAYS wear a helmet for your own sake please.

I liked the first episode. It's not too cliche (maybe a little) and has some good humor and decent characters to start with.

I find it amusing that Thomas Romain's Studio No Border is credited with the skateboard designs. Romain was also a creative force for the mecha-play-basketball show Basquash.

First episode was just okay for me. We'll see if its characters get better developed in the weeks ahead.

How assuring like the Bones show this is.
I first have my doubt this is just another show selling pretty boys, but turns out to be something pretty decent overall.
The corniness of the show just felt spot on.

I completely agree. This show reminds me a lot of Tribe Cool Crew. A nice, wholesome show about the youth enjoying their hobbies.

Is anyone else having problems watching this show using the Funi PS4 app? Whenever I start the second episode it either shows me footage from the first episode, but with the second episode subs, or the subs are a few seconds ahead of the action. (I'm having the same problem with Cells at Work: Code Black). I'd message Funi about it, but from prior experience it'll be a month before they reply back.

TCC is an underrated show (and same director as Kemono Jihen).

Looks like Dio is voiced by Takehito Koyasu, so it's definitely him.

I'm enjoying this. I mean, my entire knowledge of skateboarding comes from playing one of the Tony Hawk games back on original Playstation, and my entire knowledge of snowboarding comes from friends who used to go on snowboarding holidays back in the day (one of whom got massively bruised from falling on a halfpipe), but the show seems to do the thing of explaining stuff as it goes along in a non-patronising way.

It's also such good fun.

Copied my post from Reddit

So far, after 2 episodes, the anime's impression on me has grown! All the characters are likeable and we get to see a real progression of Langa's trials and tribulations. I think what I like the most about the storytelling is the portrayal of the progress and the journey, more so than the end result. Given that there isn't really an end result in this anime (yet), the pacing of Langa's improvements seemed perfect. Lots of falls, bruises, cuts, scratches, but lots of learning and an osmosis of passion stemming from Reki.

We get to see other characters as they are in their day to day lives...quite the transformation for some of them! I'm sure we;'ll be getting into more of them later. One thing that irked me was the robotic (boosted?) board. Kinda defeats the premise if everyone else uses manual boards, right?

Back to Reki and Langa, I really do relate to the fact that skateboarding is a means to anytime snowboarding. I picked up longboarding for the very same reasons that Langa is and while it does pain me most of the characters don't wear protective gear, it is still quite the reality these days for many skaters out there, so in that sense, the author wants to preserve that "scene" for the sake of the anime.

I do urge anyone inspired to take up any of these sports as a result of watching this anime to start off with the right protective gear, and go slow. It takes lots of practice and failures to succeed. And it takes a lot of time so never give up and keep working on it. Put in the time and work and you will gain confidence and enjoyment out of the sport to the level Reki has!

Also, now is not the time to get seriously injured if you can help it, depending on where you live and how bad the hospital capacity is. So take care of yourselves.

Looking forward to the chibi skater who apparently is some genius champion.

We are going to see the FABULOUS Koyasu in action next week already????
Is he going to be a blood sucking skater that controls gravity with butterfly wings!?!?

That Miya is a cheeky monkey.

This is so formulaic in its way, with the character classes almost as rigidly adhered to as an otome game, but it still totally works. Fecklessly charming in an utterly Bonesy way.
