Malevolent Spirits: Mononogatari

Mononogatari manga series (by Onigunsou) is getting a TV anime.

Plot Summary:

Quote:
Tsukumogami: spirits -- or "marebito" -- which have possessed objects of considerable age and gained a physical form. Although he is part of the Saenome clan which is charged with peacefully sending them back to their own world, Kunato Hyouma hates their guts because one took away what was very precious to him. In order to cure him of this loathing, Hyouma's grandfather sends him to live with Nagatsuki Botan, a girl who is the master of six "friendly" tsukumogami and lives with them as a family.

I've rarely been as disappointed as when I opened this thread to find out it wasn't a new (Bake) Monogatari series but an adaptation of some manga I've never heard of.

I thought its another arararararararararagi-swan story but it isn't. The description reminds me of of tsugumomo but I'm not familiar with this manga.

Honestly thought this was Bakemonogatari related. That cover art looks good so maybe I should try this manga.

Well, it's just "Monogatari" with no adjective in front of it. I'm sure the Japanese Bakemonogatari fans (which are 90% otakus) can easily tell the difference. Overseas fans, probably not so much.

I thought there was an announcement of some new adaptation but they hadn't announced which part exactly was getting adapted yet, hence "Monogatari".

Especially since "Monogatari" is usually the common shorthand for the franchise from what I've seen.

I didn't think it had anything to do with Bakemonogatari since I'd expect if there was the title would have reflected that. Either with a 'new bakemonogatari series or with a more official title' but I get how some might think differently.

Either way, will see how this show works out. Can be perfectly good in its own right.

Sorry; dynamic content not loaded. Reload?

It's too bad the animation doesn't look that good since the manga is actually pretty good. Still, I'm looking forward to it, mostly for the characters. Also, reading the latest chapters, they're clearly timing the anime with the manga's climax as the manga has entered it's final battle.

The premise was so generic, the main character design looks like Eren Yeager, and yet I was still entertained by it. I'm guessing I'm too much of a sucker for anime dealing with ayakashi and other elements of Japanese mythology. But I do think the interaction between the two leads is going to break and make this series.

Also main characters are college aged always a plus.

Really wished Mononogatari had gotten Mappa or Bones as studio. The art in the manga is just so awesome while the anime just looks lackluster. On the other hand, the seiyus really fits the characters and the OP and ED are awesome. Really loved the ending, especially with what's happening in the current (and final) arc in the manga.

Nothing sets up the circumstances of your protagonist quite like watching his siblings get killed by a supernatural entity...no wonder he hates the Marebito and the physical form they take. I also get the sense that Hyoma was getting along with that Tsukumogami before it went savage and tried to kill everything, which is why he has no faith or trust in them .

This whole series reminds me a lot of those older supernatural fantasy, boy meets girl, series back in the late 2000's. Almost giving me a BONES anime vibe .

Hyoma is more than capable of taking out Tsukumogami but his punch first, ask questions later, methods put him at odds with how the Saenome family try to handle things more peacefully. His grandfather cares about Hyoma a lot but knows he needs an attitude adjustment, so what better way than by forcing him to live with Tsukumogami and get along with them through that method ?

It's kind of refreshing that it seems like our leads' are both college aged instead of being in high school. Also that it takes place in Kyoto .

Bontan's Tsukumogami look great in those suits! Also, who wouldn't want to live with Miyuki Sawashiro? And it seems like they deal with Tsukumogami on their own for the sake of their mistress .

I'm not surprised Hyoma didn't mince words or pick a fight, and it definitely seems like he and Nagi will get off on the wrong foot. But capability wise they seem pretty even though neither were taking the fight completely serious .

"Restrain them both" - then proceeds to just beat up Hyoma. This feels a tad one-sided, don't you think? Although having him and Bontan meet after her servants beat him up and he still gives her a pleasant introduction while lying there with bruises was pretty cute .

The ED is pretty cute with us watching Bontan's childhood and the Tsukumogami in, what I assume, are their item forms. We even get to see her get sent off to her wedding, it seems like? I'm kind of curious about that moment where she's surrounded by creepy humans before Hyoma shows up. Is it because she doesn't trust anyone outside her family before Hyoma? Or humans in general ?

Honestly I can't really blame Hyoma's hostility or mindset. Honestly I'm more baffled at his grandfather. Did he think the kid would just forget the trauma of seeing his siblings murdered in a gruesome manner. Or are we talking not blood related and more just treating them like siblings? Because if it's the former the Grandfather is basically just casually dismissing the horrible deaths of his own grandchildren which is pretty messed up. Although even it's the latter it's still amazing that he thinks that trauma would just disappear on its own. Especially since it seems a given that the perpetrator is still on the loose.

Certainly when it comes to the direction the family wants to go, things aren't good the way they are. All the more so when you are talking about the future head of a family who eventually could absolutely put his "punch first and ask questions later" approach into full force.

If the ED is right then things could get pretty interesting. Would certainly allow for some nice balance if Botan doesn't much care for/trust humans to match Hyoma's lack of trust in tsukumogami.
