I knew that was going to deliver - and what it was going to deliver - but it was still a big impact.

I sort of wonder why he stayed behind or was left behind when the other able-bodied members of tribe headed south to seek out a better place to live. There were the older folks left behind who couldn't make the trip and it's intimated he stayed to look after them until they died (shades of the later chapters of Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou here) but, well, his unflinching upbeat genkiness in a very harsh environment gave me the impression he wasn't very intelligent and possibly neurotypical and maybe the tribe decided he'd be more of a hindrance than a help on what was going to be a very hard slog.

He says it was because Joann bit him, so perhaps his leg was injured and they were worried he'd slow them down. Or perhaps they just wanted someone to take care of the old and infirm and used that as an excuse. I definitely never got the sense that he was sub-normal in intelligence - just good at lying to himself.

Joann biting him aside, I was under the impression he was simply too young to make the trip back then. Telling him he was in charge of the elderly was so he wouldn't follow them and put himself in danger.

Well for the drawings in the wall there were some child faces and I doubt he was the only child in that village.

Yeah, I assumed other children did go with the party - that was strongly implied.

Also didn't get the impression he was dim or dumb at all, largely the result of loneliness for who knows how long. His forced optimism is so he wouldn't break down after being left for who knows how long taking care of the elderly till they passed and just by himself.

It kind of hit me how he decided to go home, I think deep down, he knew he was dead. But he wanted to die in his home instead of the middle of nowhere. Even if his home is also in the middle of nowhere.

Not only in his home, but his chair.

It's not emotionally subtle, but it's a very effective introduction to the series. Really sad in a very genuine and unforced way.

He could have been the youngest. We don't know how much time passed since the rest of his tribe left.

The best explanation is probably the one he gave. He was injured by the bite so they couldn't take him. They expected to come back soon for him and the old folks, but alas, they all died.

March is a nice girl. She's totally going to die. It looks like the orb can do some pretty cool stuff based on the OP, but I doubt it will learn to do that in time to save her. I find it weird it's acting like a newborn even though it spent quite a while as a wolf. The boy always fed him, so I would think it would remember it needs to eat at the very least.

I wonder what the orb's eyes changing colors for a brief moment meant.

March is a sweet girl and Parona is a brave girl for going against the village. I hope the two girls make it out of this, but I wouldn't be surprised if one of them didn't.

That was quite the brutal fight. Given that the orb was being stimulated, I thought it was going to turn into the bear but it didn't. Maybe it can only turn into dead things?

March and Parona are safe for now.

I didn't expect such a bloody fight from this series. I thought for sure the Orb would turn into a bear itself during the fight, but I guess it's saving that transformation for next time.

Did we really need a 2 and a half minute recap just at episode 3?! I know they wanted to end on a certain note, but man.

Can't help but think about the absolute state of the human thought process when the mafia lady said this. The logical explanation was given at the start of the show, but without it people just think everything is gods and magic.

Probably for those laggards who just started watching the show this week. I doubt it will be a common feature.

I often admire Brains-Base for their taste in music, but I'm afraid neither the OP nor the ED for this show do much for me.

The first episode was rather ethereal and moody, but the last two installments have been more mundane. I hope they re-capture some of the tenor of the opening episode in the weeks to come.
