Orange (TV Series) [anticipation]

Manga 'Orange' is getting a TV anime adaptation to air this Summer! The studio will be TMS Entertainment and be directed by Hiroshi Hamasaki.

Staff:
Director: Hiroshi Hamasaki
Screenplay: Yuuko Kakihara
Character Design: Nobuteru Yuuki
Studio: TMS Entertainment, Telecom Animation Film

Plot Summary:
Quote:
In the Spring she was 16, Takamiya Naho receives a strange, but detailed letter from herself, ten years in the future. At first she thinks the letter is a prank, but then the things written in the letter actually happen, including the new transfer student that sits next to her in class, Naruse Kakeru. The letter reads just like her diary entries, down to the same characters. It is not till two weeks later, when Kakeru shows back up at school, that Naho finishes the letter. In the letter, her 27-year-old self tells her 16-year-old self that her biggest regret is that Kakeru is no longer with them in the future, and asks her to watch him closely.

I'm pretty interested in this, one of my recent favorite shoujo series although I think it will likely be a 1-cour adaptation.

Weirdly, it switched magazines halfway through serialization, going from Bessatsu Margaret (home of frilly shoujo series like Ore Monogatari and Kimi ni Todoke), to Action Manga (publisher of gritty seinen like 17-sai and Boku wa Mari no Naka).

Those letters from the future. Tell you to watch out for someone, but can't be bothered to slip in a winning lotto number. Way to watch out for your past self .

What I'm also kinda curious is to see who will direct Steins;Gate 0 (assuming it will air this year). Very solid staff casting though imo.

Finally some Yuuki Nobuteru character designs! ...but in a show I'm not really interested in.

Maybe I'll check it out, though... depends on the cast, too. But from what I've read of the manga it came across to me as the usual high school melodrama where the main love interest has a horrible life and it's all very sad and angsty, and you can tell how the love triangle is going to play out right from the start, and to make it worse, in a way that makes me want to throw the books against the wall. (Correct me if I'm wrong, though. ) Why is it always these shoujo manga that get adaptations...

Yes!!! YES!!!!! I loved this manga a lot even with the hiatus.

My main problem is the confussion the timelines are going to induce to the anime-only viewers and how that can be turned into rage and hate against the anime.

TMS basically implies that the animation quality will be pretty shit doesn't it.

TMS had a several substudios from what I've heard, but frankly from what I watched from them, the animation quality varies a lot for each new work they make.

To add one more thing, Telecom Animation Film occasionally collaborate with TMS on some series. As a standalone studio however, the animation quality seems mediocre at best especially when they work on something that isn't based off of a popular franchise such as Detective Conan and Lupin III in which TMS own the rights of their anime adaptations.

Ya but bad? It's not like TMS is synonymous with bad animation whatsoever. Now if you told me Toei id understand, but TMS? nah.

besides even the worst studio can deliver a good shoujo, its not something that needs a bunch of animators and outsourcing.

I'll still watch it because it sells a good amount and is pretty popular but I'm not gonna hold my breath for how it'll look. And this is anime, animation does matter.

No freakin' kidding. The first thing I'd be sending myself are instructions on how to be a millionaire. Kakeru-kun, and any other kun can come later.

I stumbled across the manga a few days ago and forwent reading it, because I figured it was probably exactly as you states. This is probably why I tend to watch more shoujo romance anime then read shoujo romance manga. It's a lot easier for my brain to gloss over certain annoying details and tropes.

I think it's probably pretty dangerous to dismiss a series based on a broad-brush assessment like this. Especially given that this one actually ended up in a seinen magazine. I haven't read it myself and while the rankings in the big databases are off the charts, I know that's not an infallible indicator, but I know folks whose opinion I generally trust who say Orange is anything but a collection of shoujo tropes. We'll see in due course, I guess.

You know, a lot of people say the same thing about Kimi ni Todoke. But sorry, it's "a collection of shoujo tropes". So I'll personally keep my expectations as low as possible.

I don't think I've ever heard anyone deny that KnT was a trope-fest - only that it was a good trope-fest.

I don't know too many tropey shoujo that run in Action Manga. But I guess time will tell.

I remember not being all that impressed with the manga (granted the visuals might have a lot to do with that), but THE Hiroshi Hamazaki will direct this and that automatically puts this in my radar. Shigurui/Texhnolyze this ain't but if he can elevate Stein's Gate (despite its otaku tropes), here's to hoping!

OK. You are right here. Although I'm not on the same boat as them.

Ironically the only shoujo anime I liked was Soredemo Sekai wa Utsukushii. But a lot of people don't like it.
