It's the upper part of the picture that is tricky, because the "black" there is significantly skewered toward a ratio of red and green typical of golden colors (this can be proven with any graphical tool).
If you cut the photo in half and only show the bottom part I bet a lot more people would interpret the colors as blue and black. At any rate this is 70% light manipulation and 30% optical effect.
