Anyone here feel that the BGM was consistently decent throughout the episode? Episode was still decent regardless i think since I had zero expectations for the MC, and he managed to impress me, and well, I find the other characters more potentially interesting than the main duo since in my eyes, they feel more like a comedy duet. OP and ED songs were nice.

Personally, I'm fine with what I saw of Mirai. Clumsy. Evident. Apparently dependent, but with margin to progress. Not a character you'll going to like immediatly at difference with Rikka, but in the same rail. Just need some development I guess.

To me, she came across as a strange blend of Rika, Kanade (mainly just because of that first scene), and, oddly enough, Komari (Little Busters!). I actually didn't get the Izumiko comparison at first, but now that you mention it, I see some Izumiko in her as well. So I get what you're saying. Mirai's not as clearly and well-defined as Yui, Rika, Kotomi, or Eru. Whatever one thinks of those four girls, they each have a very distinct personality, making it theirs regardless of similarities to other girls. Mirai is a bit more of a miss-mash that hasn't fully settled yet. But then, it took a while for me to "get" Rika as well, so maybe Mirai will round into shape over time. It is only one episode after all. I do think that KyoAni might have tried a bit too hard to have Mirai come off as funny in this first episode here, perhaps to compensate for her brutal violence which is unusual for a KyoAni girl. Ah, gotcha. I know them mainly through My-HiME, Chrome Shelled Regios, and Rental Magica, which is probably on the milder end of ecchi for them.

I'm kind of hoping that we see more of her Izumiko like side soon since the final scenes seemed to be trending more serious. That would help define her some.

Something is bothering me way too much about the chase scene. The shot where she cuts the dustpan, or whatever it was, in half there is nothing at all near her, then after the camera angle switch there's suddenly a pole-thingy she trips over? Seems kind of poorly thought out.

Well, Izumiko was the POV character, whereas this is being told from the guy's point of view, so there's still the possibility for development. But this being KyoAni, I expect it will involve making Mirai more tragic and moe rather than making her an actual complex character.

I can think of plenty of anime girls that are all three.

Anyway, her being a dojikko doesn't bug me. I just feel like we haven't gotten to know any of the characters or the setting as well as I would have liked by the end of the first episode.

That part was awful. No, actually, Mirai herself is awful. She's one of the most artificially moe character I've ever seen. They tried way too hard to make her cute, to the point she pretty much became a caricature of a moe character.

I'll just say I enjoyed the first episode, and considering this is only the second KyoAni show I've watched (The first being Free!, say what?!) I didn't come in with in particularly big expectations. I found Mirai to be a somewhat believable and relateable character in that she's a spirit world warrior, but doesn't quite know how to be one. She hasn't really figured herself out yet. I think that gives them a lot to work with as her character hopefully grows. |
