Yeah, I was going for the soft style shading but I guess gratuitous use of Gaussian Blur ruined it (actually I only used it for shading the skin, but stilll...). I am trying out the 'blocky' style of coloring (you can find some examples here; concrit on that is welcome too) but I generally switch between that and soft shading. I can't decide which I prefer more.

Once again, thanks for the concrit. This is the best way I can try to improve~

- Er, just use the erase tool to take them out? Probably just me being a photoshop nub, though.
- At least you don't add black for shadows. Adding black to a colour =/= using black, honestly. You can always just overlay a colour over the entire image when you're done or play around with that hue/saturation tool if you're trying to make something stand out more because you're usually not going to magically get the right colours you want at the beginning.
- Everything tends to look better when you make it smaller. ;P

I like the blocky style more, but I think it's only because the shadows are more.... defined? And it depends on what you're colouring. I've seen some artist's sketches and thought they looked better than some finished works, but it really just depends on what they're doing.

Actually, the only "major things" that bugged me were the skin colour and how it all looked blurred to me.

Natural skin colour is probably one of the more difficult things when it comes to colouring only because the human skin has a wide range of different colours - some blue, green, maybe even purple from the veins, then you have your more noticeable warmer colours that change depending on the skin tone and health of the person. Are they Caucasian? How pale? Do they have a tan? Are they ill? And so on and so forth.

Lessening the blur tool, or even not using it at all because you could just use less "hardness" on the brush since I'm assuming she's using Photoshop, would help make the shadows more defined. It'd also help knowing how soft the light source actually was because there are some weird lighting situations [gag @ two+ light sources]. Oh, and adding more layers of shadow to add more depth to an image to help make it feel more "real" can help, but even something like this still looks marvelous - the only things that actually have highlights are Battler and Virgilia's hair, while everything else is the base colour and shadows. And look, the darkest shadows are even black! It all depends on the colours you choose and how you shade the rest of the picture to make it work, but that could be said for anything in art.

My brain just thinks black shadows -> harsh light source -> Baroque, y'know, Caravaggio, Rembrandt, Rubens, those guys. Bad habit. OTZ

There's also some other little things you can do to make an image look better. Like, if they're outside or by water or by something that gives off a different colour, then you can add a little bit of a colour similar to it to the highlights. It's hard for me to explain that last one right now because my mind is blargh, but I'm sure if you saw an example, you'd know what the hell I was talking about. Reflective colouring? This actually isn't a bad example.

Some artists can trick you by trying to over-doing x to cover y. I've seen some wonderful sketches ruined by the colouring, but I've mostly seen the opposite of them trying to hide the "abnormalities" in their anatomy by trying to do an amazing colouring job. Don't worry, I'm not accusing unasuvas of doing that, just something you should look out for if you ever really look at art, moreso the fanart.

Also, this is actually part of the basics of a decent grade ten or higher visual arts class in high school. Maybe. I never took grade nine art and I've only completed grade ten art, to be honest. :>

If you'd really like me to try and colour one of the manga pages unasuvas did, it'd take me some time, I don't really mind. But I'd much rather colour a NanoFate image for a friend. -cough-
