I have to argue that Shinji was dealt a very recent blow right before EoE with the death/murder of Kaworu. Not to mention his closest friends Touji and Aida all left him. When dealing all that with his base personal, I don't have a problem with Shinji's logical response to the situation.

Do I like it? Oh hell no. Does it make sense? Yes.

Now let's not get into EoE here folks. An argument for another time.

Any news when the DVDs for Rebuild 2.0 will be available?

So far, seems like the movies are dealing Shinji a good hand. We'll see if it continues.

Does it really matter if we talk about other Eva material? Those of us who have seen 2.0 have already talked about it...those of us who haven't are still waiting...until everyone's seen it, why NOT talk about EoE...or the TV series...or hell, even Re-Take.

And with that clever segue, I have now read the first two volumes of Re-Take, and...um...I'm not really liking it. I can't really articulate exactly WHY yet, but...yeah, something about it just doesn't feel right.

More later...

When I read it again it does feel off due to re-writing a fair bit of the past events. I mainly love it for the last 2 volumes, the EoE fight and the after story. It isn't exactly on-par material, but it does give the characters an ending they deserved as opposed to the one they got. It really feels like how EoE could have turned out if Shinji had progressed like the series showed he was capable of, instead of getting turned into a target of the creators vented depression.... and in the end it doesn't end up changing anything from the "real" ending. Just sort of, filling in a blank.

Rei wanted to help, Asuka was super pissed but functional again, if Shinji had just managed to go out and fight along side her, they really could have overcome it. The three of them could have done it. That's the ending that I see as more fitting to the series, and that's the one I'll hang on to.

Hmmm...maybe that's my problem with Re-Take; I thought both the TV endings and EoE were perfectly appropriate finales, and I'm not sure I really like the "active" Shinji of Re-Take.

That said, I quite liked the "active" Shinji of 2.0...but then, he was active at that point in the TV series also.

I dunno. I downloaded the whole series, so I'll keep reading. Maybe it'll win me over finally.

By the way, I've read Volumes 1 and 2. I tend to like to read things in order of production (rather than story chronology), so where should Vol. 0 and Vol. 1.5 fit in...?

Evangelion and Kare Kano had a lot of the same composers.

I really enjoyed retake despite the H scenes. The ending was really sweet and it sort of seemed like the characters deserved such an ending after the cluster fuck that was EoE.

Yep, both scores are composed by Sagisu Shiro, so it's no surprise that people can hear similarities between the two.
