It's not like this is the first time either side have dome seemingly stupid things, especially the Vagans. The war could've been over a long time ago, one way or the other.

Why would you spend 20+ years carefully infiltrating Earth, hiding mobile suits in buildings, etc. to give you the ultimate surprise attack -- only to squander that surprise on attacking the civilian population? Thereby giving the military forces ample time to sortie?

If they had gone straight for the military base, they probably could have destroyed many of the mobile suits before they could launch, and the Diva right in her berth.
30 episodes is a long time to spend on a show you seem to adamantly dislike everything about wouldn't you say? Just curious as to why you continue to subject yourself to a show that you seem to feel does everything wrong all the time.

Let's keep in mind that the Danazines were more or less invincible against the Clanches' Hyper DODS Rifles, so ultimately they had no worry about the military presence. The Vagans had no clue this time that the Gundam was in the area, and had the firepower to take out a Danazine in a single shot.

If the Gundam had not been there, then the Vagans would've completely crushed Olivernotes regardless of military strength there. As for targeting civilians, it's colonization. Needed to wipe out the native population.

Acting like your enemy's best weapon doesn't exist is a foolish thing to do unless they know for sure that the Gundam would not be able to interfere.

That can be done easily after they eliminate the native population's ability to fight back, aka, the military force.

If we look at how it was done from the mid XIXth to early XXth in various parts of the world, ravaging civilian infrastructures and populations centers is key in a sound replacement type colonization. Or even in a simple pacification procedure.

Even tough it wasn't in a replacement colonization perspective, the Boer War highlights how the deportation and concentration of the whole civilian population is what brought their men to surrender. This strategy was similarly used in Cuba and the Philippines during the same era.

As recently as 1998, during the Kossovo conflict, NATO submitted Yugoslavia by ravaging all their infrastructures, altough with a lot of "surgical strikes" whitewashing: of course bridges, roads, railroads, train station, factories, refineries, power plants and telecom facilities are sound military targets, but guess what, they are the backbone of a country's civilian infrastructure, plus they tend to have civilian around/in/on them.

I'm not so sure those examples can be applied at the scale of AGE's conflict. What's been happening in AGE is that the Vagans attack civilian populations, and either the military responds or not. Either way, after the attack, the Vagans then retreat.

Besides the loss of life and the recent foothold on Earth, can you tell me what the Vagans have achieved by their attacks? It doesn't appear like the Federation's infrastructure is any worse because of it, and there's no talk of surrender.
