Light novel 'Tensei Shitara Slime Datta Ken' (Regarding Reincarnated to Slime/That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime) is getting a TV anime adaptation. Coming Fall 2018.

Plot Summary

After being killed by a passing robber, a normal 37-year-old guy finds himself reincarnated in another world as a blind slime with unique abilities. He takes up a new name and calls himself "Rimuru Tempest," which he thought of after meeting his new friend, "catastrophe-level" Storm Dragon Verudora. There, he begins his new slime-like life in another world with his increasing number of minions by his side.

Wow. Whenever some other isekai LN's anime adaptation is announced, people always say that ones like Slime Datta Ken and Kumo desu ga deserved it more, or hopefully will be announced next. So, I'm sure many people have waited for this. Me included, as someone who read about half of the WN.

Looks like we don't have a lot of info yet, just "fall 2018". Just around the corner, huh.

I've been wondering if the marketing staff perhaps plans to pull a madoka magica here... or something even more ridiculous...


It feels like every new PV and every new key visual each change the appearent genre and/or general impression of what this series is about (take note that for these impressions I try my best to ignore my knowledge from reading the WN and manga):

PV 1 gave the impression that this is some kind of fantasy slice-of-life with a bit of action and ecchi mixed in.





PV 2

PV 2 gave the impression that it's basically an action-adventure of an OP slime with some ecchi elements.

The first key visual which has the blue-haired person firing some kind of beam out of the hand gives the impression that this would be a shounen action series which primarily focuses on the adventure of the titular slime and the blue-haired person right next to it.

The second key visual has this "typical ecchi harem isekai" feeling written all over it with all male characters appearently just being there as buttmonkeys for comic relief, as we can see them either being almost non-existent, or used as stepping stones for the "harem" to gravitate towards the titular isekai'd slime... but why do they look like they are watching the "blue-haired heroine's" upward pointing index finger instead of looking at the slime?!

The third key visual gives a somewhat grim-dark feeling and shows us what looks like a dark romance adventure between... a trap(?) and a girl on a mission to defeat the legendary demon dragon... but the titular slime is nowhere to be seen!




(Again, I am a WN/manga reader and I am intentionally pretending that I know nothing about this series, all for the purpose of understanding what newcomers might be thinking when looking at this. There's no need to "correct" me with spoilers here.)

I really don't get what the anime marketing staff is going for here. Trying to draw in various niche audiences one-by-one? In general a good idea, since the series DOES really have many sides to it. It seems this doesn't quite work with the Western audience though, since for some reason it seems like this series has been pretty much under the radar for other Western anime sites which I will not be naming here.

It seems a music video for first opening song "Nameless Story" (TV size) by Takuma Terashima has been released before the series started airing. Take note that it's only a music video and that it doesn't have the opening visuals that the actual opening will have.

I still wait for the visuals of the opening once it properly airs, but the music itself doesn't seem cringy or ultra high-pitched, so that's a good start.

Spoiler for pre-aired EP1 RAW - first impressions:

The pre-airing episode got leaked and I must say I am very satisfied with what I could see even if I didn't understand much (RAW).

Let me say this in advance: I read about half of the WN and am caught up with the manga and only roughly know what LN volumes equates what moments in the WN.

I am VERY glad that they didn't rush this (though I hope it won't be too slow either, i.e. it NEEDS to finish at least the content of LN vol. 5, ideally vol. 6, because both of them should be a good point to end the series within 2 cours, though depends on the exact number of episodes, like 24, 25 or 26). It actually adaptated less that I expected, which turned out to be a good thing now that I look at it.

Another thing I liked were the visuals. Compared to all other isekai-by-reincarnation I think this series has visualized the process the best, it's not even a contest. It realy gave it the spiritual feel to it, you'd expect from reincarnation. Reincarnation is something that seems fairly common in various far-eastern religions after all.

Most importantly it set the TONE of the series. It can smoothly switch between goofy and serious scenes, without feeling out of place, of course.

Spoiler for me kind of 'hinting' at future events:

This kind of switch is something I remember happening in the WN a TON LOT. It's escpacially important for future scenes, since this dynamic really gets you when, once you get used to the dynamic, the expected goofy "it's no big deal" follow-up just suddenly doesn't happen. These moments of getting caught off-guard are one of the things that made the WN so good when I read it.

I personally don't have any problems with the voice. It actually feels slightly better in the actual anime than in the PVs, but I never had a problem with most of the other supposedly "annoying" voices in anime, so maybe that's just me.

Since we already knew that it would be two-cour, I had hoped for up to 26 episodes, but 24 is still thousands of times better than only 12 or 13 episodes. Now the speculation for how far into the story the anime will reach, begins.

Personally, I think it will probably end with either LN vol. 5 or LN vol. 6, as these two would each make for an excellent ending spot. Anything else would very weird.

vol. 6 would be the better choice in terms of closure, but it would become the standard 4 episode per volume pace, which might make it quite fast paced, while ending it at vol. 5 would provide more time for details that are usually omitted in other isekai. Both ending points have their merits. We shall see.

Ok, I finished watching this in a better quality now and I'm satisfied with the first episode.

Classic isekai tropes here with the MC getting transported to another world after being reincarnated as a...slime. I like the humor of this so far although it may take me awhile to get used to the slime's voice.

Glad they got a good amount of humor into the first episode though as that was I was looking for. Neat episode so far. And it's 2 cour so plenty of storytelling to come.

Oh and the OP song is actually rather catchy.

Ohhhh hoooooo just finish watching but damnnn the visual is suuuuuppppper!!! Legit!! My Goodness the animation is LIT!! I'm so glad they decided not to turn this into a massive 3D CGI shit festival or else this would be a one heck of fcking shit storm...Im soooooo glad they did not yayyy!!!!!

If he knew how his abilities were selected, I suspect this guy might have had a few words to say to this supernatural computer-like thing that reincarnated him. Particularly since his wish to screw every girl he sees upon reincarnation was somehow translated to the ability to absorb, dissolve and replicate things. Seriously, most of the wishes' translations I get even if they come with some potential drawbacks, but how the heck does "I want to have sex with tons of women" turn into "you can dissolve and store anything"?
