Episode 16: Summary and screencaps

flat out revelations and truth.
Painful ordeal for Hanyuu, while Takano is delighted in the shadows...
That said, the PART C reveals how the beginning of the end will rise.

A neat paced episode, giving crystal clear approach of what happened. This is only the first glimpse of it, as the pieces aren't completely shown yet.
Nothing to complain about, as the PART C was not butchered, though a bit shortened. That said, things go serious, and i guess next episode will be BIG on revelations for the year 1980 to 1981 or even 1982.

This epsiode jumps around so much that I think people might get confused if this is the first time they watch this. Just in the A-part, we started from Showa 52, then jumped to S55, then back to S54 and back to S53. Overall they have covered about 12/14 pieces, so it'll probably be impossible for them to cover all of the rest in the next 2 epsiodes...

Since we have a well translated pieces section here, these are the numbers for those who are intrested:

In the end, this epsiode was nicely paced, and introduced many elements to the complex history. Next epsiode will probably be revolved around the events of S55/56

1)So Satoko's little "gomen nasai" fit in tatarigoroshi-hen is probably from hearing Hanyuu's apologizing voice while she was L4/L5...? And on that, is there anything in particular that dictates when people outside of Rika can hear/see Hanyuu?

2)The miracle from outside thing always bugged me in the pieces because it gave K1 a slight Mary Sue vibe (of course, I've never seen a Mary Sue go into KOOL mode, but that's a different thing entirely...) But I'm also thinking maybe there was a world before the post-credits scene where Hanyuu and Rika could go back further and had already experienced a world where K1 had come to Hinamizawa and made a difference...what do you guys think?

All in all, awesome episode. I adore Satoshi and am starting to love Irie, despite his...lolicon tendencies. It is kinda heartwrenching to see what Satoko goes through and even moreso what Hanyuu witnesses, powerless to change it, over and over again (as well as Rika).

It's my understanding that anyone who is Level 5 or approaching it (like Satoko) can sometimes hear Hanyuu ... that's why Shion could hear footsteps in the Furude shrine's secret chamber.

I'm not really convinced that Irie was "salivating" about this at all. The quote (or even the piece itself) made him reflect upon the suggestion of Takano, which turned him off pretty quickly.
The problem is that the anime has absolutely no way to cover Irie's past (the reason why he aimed for Neurochirurgy and then ended up in Psychochirurgy), hence, it is impossible to show the struggle he had before.

Since Irie isn't favorable for such thing, but past isn't possible to show, they had to give him the fittest reaction which is "outraged, but can't argue much".
It was a decent "adaptation", as Irie's struggle would require half a episode to explain, but also to point, as it requires a monologue as well. In this episode, Irie was struck by this, and even wondered "is it forgiveable?"
Concretely, he was portrayed as he was supposed to be.

this is even more suggested in the piece of the "first sacrifice"

Irie: “…Circumstances aside, I’m sure it must’ve been something in which he wouldn’t be let off too easily with several years in jail or the like…”
Takano: “*chuckle chuckle* Basically he’s just a shit of society. Wouldn’t that fact relieve your hesitation in dissecting him, Director Irie?”
Irie: “…We don’t know if he was a ‘shit of society’ who built up his criminal past and became ferocious from the Hinamizawa Syndrome, or if he was a person who repented his past but unfortunately became a victim of the syndrome and turned violent again. …If it’s the former, well….but if it’s the latter, then there’s no sin towards this man.”

the rest is somehow the same, though Irie was trying to "persuade" himself of the justification of doing such.
So seriously, no, he was humanized that much. He was already like this.

Well, that animation quality is about the same as the last episode, so I don't have the reason to add points for that aspect.

The rest of the episode is ok. Once again, I think Hanyuu's serious voice needs to be more...assertive? I mean, her cute side is very, very well-done, but the serious side can use a bit of power. I think Yukino Satsuki has a better "gomenasai"

Once again, loved the scene after the closing credits. Now I know better than to skip everything after the song, haha

The thing is that Hanyuu is "not" serious, but rather pained. the "i'm sorry" parts were more likely some resolve and "kill feeling".

No, that wasn't exactly like this. Irie was "trying" to feel like excited, as he is remembering of his past, and "motivations".
These are still struggling like hell when he is "interacting" with Takano, and it is even more blatant when L5 are involved.

Also in some pieces his thoughts are as bad as Takano's are

Do you have some samples? because the "worst" are probably the first sacrifice and his past, which are mixed bag, more towards "uneasiness" and "struggle between researcher curiosity and human morals"
That said, for the specific period of time the anime portrayed, Irie is reasonably portrayed "accurately". Things might change later on, but with Satoko's case, i doubt it a lot.

The only thing that I can say is...... Even one year later right now, I still cannot forget that intellectual excitement.

That's why, if the result of the examination...... shows that Satoshi-kun's beloved sister will become the target for dissection............will I be able to stay calm without licking my lips in excitement?

.........If I dissect Satoko-chan alive.... Will I be able to taste that intellectual excitement again?

Will I be able to reach that realm of trance once again?
...No... Will I be able to win against that temptation?

The man last year...... was kept alive for several months...... while he was being dissected alive.

With his cranium left in an opened state, he wasn't allowed to die for several months, and was kept alive only for the sake of cruel experiments.
I don't want to force that on her......!

What should I do...?
Even my own worries, even my own conflicts, are passively moving to agree to her dissection....

Though Irie does change as the pieces go on, like when C*** is talked about
