Honestly, although they need to do so for storytelling logic, Takuto doesn't need a huge info dump of a background to make me LIKE or be interested in him.
He's a great lead and one of the things that really makes the show work. He's not a whiney angsty Shinji type (although I actually LIKE shinji) nor is he the brooding badass type. He's happy go lucky but capabable from the get go and he KNOWS it. He's just there to have fun, kick some ass and prolly get to know Wako a lil better too Wako is nice too, she's not acting all spazzy about her liking of Takuto nor is she saccharinely cute.... Sorry, just wanted to say that. |

Excellent episode. Less fighting, but more feelings. And top-notch voice work. Hayami Saori is always given gentle, sweet-voiced characters, but she sounds to me as if she is expanding her emotional range a bit in this show. Playing opposite Miyano Mamoru can't hurt.

In this case, Hayamin has been told to keep her strong dynamics, careful phrasing, and overpowering sweetness at bay and sing as simply as possible, in character. And the melody is rather complex, not a powerful incantation like Tomatsu's. I suspect Hayamin will have other songs to sing as we go along. If you want to hear what's so great about her voice, the ED to this week's OreImo is the most recent example. But personally, I find myself on the edge of ecstasy at every phrase of many of her songs. She creates space around each note, and draws out the musicality in the music. Check out the compilations on Nico of 早見沙織 songs, or the single songs on YouTube.

^Don't get me wrong, I'm not implying that Hayamin is a bad singer. I like her voice as well, although probably not as much as you. It's just that they made such a big deal out of Wako's singing in this episode that I expected to hear something at least on par with Fish girl's song, and it wasn't the case at all in my opinion. Hopefully, her next songs will be more powerful.
I'm usually not a big fan of Tomatsu's singing either but she's really impressed me these past few weeks. Her song in this anime, and the recent Katanagatari ED are both wonderful. By far the best works she's ever done. Maybe she's improving?

Honestly didn't know Hayamin was that good of a singer. The fact that Wako was singing like that does seem to point at she wasn't singing to her ability (just singing mostly to herself and in a disturbed mood with no one being around). I'm sure we'll get some better songs from her later on in the series, probably at a more key moment than that.
Have to give Fish Girl credit since she has sung pretty well in the series. Plus if she's going to be that energetic in her story telling then her segments should be plenty entertaining.

I agree that I was expecting some sort of flash back for Takuto, between the picture the last episode and the admission this episode that he used to be quieter (sounds like he can't quite recall his past, never a good sign) I'm hoping we get more background on him later.

And speaking of getting to know Wako better, isn't that what the GCB was trying to achieve in this episode? It sounds like they wanted to drive Wako and Sugata apart (using the feelings/memories of the other girl) and make Takuto and Wako closer in the process. I can't figure out why (especially since Sugata seems to want this as well) but they did say "mission accomplished" at the end of the episode (or it could be a set up for something totally different next episode, this one was pretty light on explanation when I think about it).

I'm not so sure that Sugata wants what you say. I noted how he questioned and then paused at the end of the episode when he heard Takuto call Wako by her name. Sugata seemed slightly jealous to me then. I don't think Sugata objects to marrying Wako rather he doesn't like the fact that their marriage has been arranged by their parents. I think he'd rather win her hand in a more romantic way.

@Shiroth: It would be pretty early for an infodump but with all the foreshadowing I can' help but want it now.

I appreciated the intent to focus more on one character (Wako in this case) so that we can get their deal without a whole bunch of other crazy things interfering, but I still found this one more confusing and hard to follow than it should probably be. Lot of cryptic dialogue for the side characters as always, but I kind of got the picture that the Crux was using that one girl with the glasses because of her crush on Sugata and at the last second she pulled out and they couldn't actually go to battle with Tauburn.
This is probably about as straightforward a script as this show is going to get for a long time unfortunately, but at least we now know a bit more about Wako. Probably the most developed of all the characters at this point. Still wouldn't call it a "good" character development episode, but it's a start. |

I do wonder what Sugata himself is really thinking. He's certainly given enough to make people think he's fine with pushing Wako and Takuto together. Yet the idea that he just doesn't want to get the girl because of an engagement decided by his parents has merit. I guess the real question is why the Crux want Wako and Takuto to get closer. Are they just after the separation from Sugata? Do they gain anything from Takuto throwing himself into these fights with more determination?
An episode where we got some answers, but we also got some more questions. Well this early in the series it's not that surprising.

Im wondering if Takuto's did not have a true purpose on the island other than going to school before he found out the events that have been taking place. The previous engagements were more of his defending himself. However after episode 4 he clearly states he will destroy all their mechs. The reason behind that statement was obvious as he finally hear Wako sing for the first time and hears why she cant leave the island to pursue her dream of being a singer. We got some good stuff in episode 4 and even though technically it was a slow episode we got key material to move the story along a "motivation" of the main character which i felt there was none.
I could listen to fish girl all day someone needs to let the poor girl out of the cage
