After reading the manga that is released, without vol 8 and it being on hiatus i am now wondering where the series will go. The main theme of the series was them finding their parents, and with that coming close to an end, including the Self Defense Force Evacuation taking place soon, I can see this may be the end. Unless he continues it, with the evac going wrong or even if it goes ok he can either continue it as Surviving the apocalypse or he can end the series after they get rescued. What are your thoughts?

Well, there can be a continuation. I would say that after they find their parents, or not, they end up having to go to that airport where Shizuka's friend Rika is, and they can pick her up there, or help seal the place off. Either way, I see that once those 2 objectives have been accomplished, or at the least Rika manages to meet up with the group on her own by chance, there may end up being a time skip, or coverage of their journey to find a safe place in order to launch anti-zombie attacks to thin out the zombie scourge in order for humanity to start again.

It may be possible that the story author is either stumped on how to go about this, or is looking more at the overall story and trying to figure out how to go about it with considerations to how it's already turned out, and what to do next with character developments and conflicts they may have, and with whom.

@Asterend If i remember correctly the artist been busy working on his personal project TriageX even before the hiatus i remember when Xamayon dropped the translation and torpedo's took up the trans Triage and HoTD where rotating. Its been roughly around a year now. But if the artist is still releasing pictures we know for sure that HoTD will come back.

Not quite. This isn't the first time HotD has gone on an indefinite hiatus. It only got past volume 5 once the anime was announced. Triage X was created during that first hiatus to fill HotD's place and give the artist something to do. When HotD is back however it seems to take priority over Triage X. I think the hope with the bimonthly schedule for HotD was that the writer would have more time to work on the story but of course that ended up not working out.

If HotD does come back, I sincerely hope they try to end it by volume 10, if only because the writer can't be trusted to keep working in the long term.

The author can always go into the backstory that led to the zombie apocalypse. The main cast asked certain questions such as what reanimated the zombies and how the effect was happening around the entire world at the same time. Plenty of material to work with, provided HSOD is ever released from hiatus.
