Yes I can't handle the darkness either, it was so hard to see anything at the end of the episode when they descended into the dark pit.

On a serious note, it would be odd if it didnt go a bit dark given how it's been hinting at it left and right.
Let's face it, they're descending into a hell hole! Presumably it's a cursed land too.

We didn't get to see the drummer blow up though. They teased it, and then that hand came through.

That's my impression, anyway, based on the look and feel of what we've seen so far.
Source material is a manga, and as for the level of "horror" it goes beyond Miyazaki films.
On a side note I can't wait for the fifth layer to be animated because if they can do it right it will be breathtakingly beautiful.

Not sure what they mean, but without spoilers is it possible to elaborate on the dark part? Like is this going to turn into to a horror genre because i don't do well with those.
Unfortunately the only non-spoiler answer is you will just have to keep watching and see for yourself.

Episode 4:

World buidling has been pleasant this show and we got a look of the first two layers of the Abyss. Habo is a strange dude but I like his personality so far in this show.

Oh and I also think the character chemistry between Regu and Riko to be pretty well done so far. Looking good!

In the ED they appear to add a "white rabbit" to their party.

I was frankly shocked when their first descent covered 850 meters. Given the way descent into the Abyss has been presented so far, I expected it would take an episode or two to go that far down. Maybe the journey was abridged to fit in the episode count?

Riko and Reg have a remarkably intimate physical relationship compared to most anime couples. It could be explained away by Reg being a "robot," but we all know he's fully equipped. Compared to a show like
Spoiler:
where holding hands at the end is the culmination of the on-screen relationship, these two hold hands and hug each other all the time. So far their intimacy seems entirely innocent, and a consequence of their adventure, but it's certainly a change from many shows I've watched. Only Shin Sekai Yori comes to mind when it comes to twelve-year-old intimacy, but in that case it's a part of the story line.

Ep 04

More nicely animated (and OST'd!) work from Kinema Citrus in this episode ... it is frankly a treat to watch how they have handled the adaptation thus far.

Looks like next episode they may reach the Seeker Camp and perhaps even the White Whistle who lives there ... it will be interesting for me to see how they present the camp and the White Whistle especially.

I had some misgivings at first about the 'slow' pacing but after this episode I am okay with what they are doing.

I don't know why, but while it's cool that they got to the 2nd level, it still feels like there are a heck of a lot of irresponsible adults in this series. -_-
But considering what we've seen so far of this world, I'm not surprised.

Did you just insult his "greatness"

Same here.

Initially thought it was mostly for Riko's backstory but now realize it's (intentionally or not) super essential for Reg, since he has very little personality due to lack of any sort of concrete background. Usually character morals are shaped by their background, and normally what we would see is Reg being super emo (because he has 0 backstory other then "being from the abyss"), but it's very refreshing that they gave him actually decent (not-shit) character instead, and the Riko school interlude shaped that up nicely—even if it took 3 episodes.

Wow they got to the second level quick. I wonder if Ozen is the white rabbit from the ED.

Well with someone like Habo being a black whistle it was no surprise how fast he moved. Though he had the best chance to take them back and didn't. I wonder what he meant that they're all children of the netherworld.

I wondered about that, too. I can't see that we're meant to take it literally, since the city was built by people who traveled to the Abyss. Symbolically he might mean that everyone there tied to the Abyss because it plays such a central role in their lives.

I don't think Reg lacks personality at all. He's clearly quite inquisitive and bright as you can hear in his commentaries. He also cares a lot about Riko. It's sometimes tough for other characters to show through when you have a dominant lead like genki Riko. Hajime similarly tended to "chew up the scenery" in Gatchaman Crowds.

I dunno, it's presented that it's supposed to get harder the deeper you go. Therefore the first layer should be the fastest and easiest portion of the decent. If they took 2 episodes for this, wouldn't it seem crazy fast if they took less than an episode or something to descend through the lower layers (assuming this gets that far)? The abyss has what, 7 or 8 layers to get to the mapped bottom? If this is only going to be 12 episodes, they have to cover 1 layer per episode now (which makes me think it's going to end ambiguously or something when they reach the entrance to the 6th layer, the so called "last dive").

Just started it and on Episode 2. This reminds me of Megaman Legends for more than one reason... and I approve. Also, did someone from the Gibili-team get jacked for this project?

The art director for this series used to work at Ghibli and he also did some background art for Kimi No na Wa.

Oh... good. Then at least it'll be pretty. Now if only I hadn't let my curiosity get the better of me and binge-read the manga. Do we have a thread for that? I have... feelings that I want to let out...
